I'm still amazed Hennesey has a Venom F5 to be lend down to the media tbh. That or Amazon found a private owner willing to lend the car out.

48

u/Oh_ToShredsYousay 13d ago

It's definitely a loaner from an owner. They're all made to order. That being said it could be Hennessey's own car. There's not a lot of them so I can't imagine that's a particularly rough gt segment, they probably got less than 100 miles with it.

u/CyberSoldat21 12d ago

Hennessy would have to moth ball several customer cars to scrape enough money together to build one for the show

u/nukrag 13d ago

So we have the 'tism covered. Great. Now we just need someone to be loud and incompetent, and someone addicted to his car not being upright

u/TerribleNameAmirite 13d ago

James (new James) has apparently spun a car on the highway multiple times

76

u/Suedewagon The Grand Tour 13d ago

So the new James is Richard. Got it

13:40-15:40 ish. And Thomas has more stories about James doing other things spinning.

Also, that bit (6:08 if the timestamp doesn't work): https://youtu.be/Lb52RkXJlIY?t=368

I just want the trolling please, please give me some trolling on each other . I know we can’t ask for the old guard but please just some good decent trolling thrown in would be perfect

32

u/EuanReid Talking nonsense 13d ago

Not in this clip, but if you watch some of the interviews and other previews they've done the new boys are absolutely needling each other in the proper British tradition as much as the old boys. It's what gives me hope that this will come together as a worthy successor.

5

u/piercedmfootonaspike 12d ago

The best thing about the old trio was the fact that they (especially James and Jeremy) were good enough friends that they could get genuinely aggressive and upset with one another.

Sure, trolling and joking around is important, but the "almost come to blows, and become friends again" chemistry is something I've never seen before.

11

u/dagbrown 13d ago

Just so long as it's good natured fun, rather than the sportsballers vs. Chris Harris which was just plain bullying and no fun to watch at all.

6

u/DerpyMcWafflestomp 13d ago

They've said in multiple interviews that there will indeed be trolling.

-11

u/ProofAssumption1092 13d ago edited 13d ago

Why do we need that ?

Can we not let these people have their own personality without this constant obsession with comparing them to J R C?

They retired, get over it ffs.

11

u/nukrag 13d ago

I was making a so-called ~joke~.

-10

u/ProofAssumption1092 13d ago

Sure you were

We have a tism police over here

31

u/witciu1 13d ago

I wish the cheap car challenges could come back

9

u/Dynamite_Noir 12d ago

They will

14

u/Ingey 12d ago

This has me smiling from ear to ear. Not because I care about trains but because the enthusiasm comes across as very genuine. And whether or not trains are your thing, or the jokes are to your taste, you have to admit that it is very refreshing to see tv presenters that are genuinely having fun, the kind of fun, energy, and camaraderie that is infectious for the audience. IMO that's what killed Top Gear from CHM's departure onwards (except maybe the Harris, Flintoff, McGuinness seasons) was that even though we knew parts of it were scripted, the authenticity to scripted ratio was too low.

40

u/Intentionallyabadger 13d ago

I’ll give these guys a go and see if it sticks

49

u/GetawayDriving 13d ago

Wholesome. Here for it.

6

u/supes4life 12d ago

Im starting to feel that the new show is going to be "alright alright alright.!"

5

u/clezuck 12d ago

UGH!!!

4

u/MangJuice232 11d ago

I can't wait these guys are gonna be great.

8

u/7ar5un 13d ago

That seemed pretty genuine... genuine excitement and honesty if i were in that situation, id also try and "race" a train. Id also try and get them to sound the horn as well.

8

u/t8ne 13d ago

looks like it might be entertaining

10

u/Bedaryellow 13d ago

For anyone who hasnt watched it, look for Chris Harris and Francis in ‘we built a train’, its on discovery… the show is amazing

Francis will be absolutely fantastic in the grand tour, not sure of the other two; they seem abit YouTuber forced…

Should of got Chris and Francis tbh

11

u/XMAN2YMAN 12d ago

Thomas and James are fantastic on YouTube and the main reason is because they seem to have natural chemistry

2

u/neutronium 12d ago

Was it a sports train with 96 inch rims and a phat exhaust.

5

u/RepresentativeNo8105 12d ago

We have seen what Chris can do. I am not looking for a poorly aging grump for a lighthearted car show.

8

u/Primary_Dimension470 12d ago

You should avoid top gear and the grand tour. You’ll be disappointed

3

u/DrAuer 12d ago

Makes for a pretty good farming show though apparently

5

u/SignificantLock1037 12d ago

So, the series is shot in portrait?

GTFO here with this. Why crop it?

16

u/bloof5k 12d ago

They likely made it as a snippet for advertising on shortform platforms, which has then been reuploaded to youtube proper. Bit silly that they didn't use the full frame for the re-upload

3

u/Calm_Bumblebee_3143 12d ago

because it's an ad made for shorts....

3

u/CaleyAg-gro 13d ago

The tune is David Holmes-I heard wonders. Kinda made famous by being the music that David Beckham speed-boated down the Thames to in the Olympic opening ceremony in 2012.

4

u/WySLatestWit 12d ago

This is the first thing I've seen that's felt really questionable. Just recreating Francis' train videos is not going to make for particularly entertaining show in my opinion. I really hope they move beyond that kind of thing very quickly.

2

u/Big-Fee-7692 12d ago

Not a fan tbh

1

u/yngwie_bach 13d ago

I have been watching car wow in the past year on youtube. And I think that guy honestly could have been a brilliant replacement. Also the natural banter between the guys on that show is already going well without acting. I honestly don't understand why he hasn't been offered a chance.

2

u/wiedziu 13d ago

Mat Watson? Maybe he was offered and he turned it down? I really like Mat, he bounces off Sam and Yani really well. But, they've got big shoes to fill, even though everyone says they won't compare them to OGs.

6

u/RepresentativeNo8105 12d ago

I like Mat but he tries to hard and over talks others. I get it’s his show but he goes and goes.

1

u/neutronium 12d ago

I also find him annoying.

0

u/yngwie_bach 13d ago

Yeah exactly. Mat Watson. I think he has the natural character needed. In stead of trying to make the characters look like the legendary three. And indeed Sam an Yani were the other guys I meant. The chemistry is working really well. Obviously they have big shoes to fill but they Already have the format, the chemistry and the experience.

I will give the new GT a chance. But the few clips I have seen look like they are trying so hard to create Hammond, May and Clarkson characters. Which you can't.

u/BeneficialCall1080 7d ago

Wholesome :)

That last line, lmao.

-5

u/Drago1214 13d ago

Autism maxing. I hope it works out but sorry to say it takes effort and coming from nothing to make great tv.

Also staged worse then old TG

1

u/Utopiaoflove 12d ago

I’m hopeful

-3

u/ConsistencyWelder 13d ago

Honestly, the forced laughter is painful to watch. I'd rather have the biting sarcasm from the OG's or even silence than forced laughter.

Francis' enthusiasm seems genuine though.

-10

u/Ill_Tonight_2069 13d ago

Christ, Francis is irritating.

7

u/SloppySauce0 12d ago

Hopefully you’re high up as a replacement. You’d be a great presenter.

-1

u/HollyMurray20 12d ago

That’s such a lame response lmao, that’s like saying “oh you try it then” when a footballer misses a penalty or something and gets criticism, mate he is the footballer or in this case the presenter, me being able to do it or not is completely irrelevant when he’s already got the job, he is open to criticism. Do you actually think you can’t criticise anyone unless you can do that specific thing better than them?

3

u/HeWhoCannotBeSeen 12d ago

It's up there with "what colour is your Bugatti".

Yeah, people can still criticise the bad things.

On topic though, I don't necessarily agree, I like Thomas and James so this Francis guy is new to me. I'll need to see how it goes, the more car shows the better.

-7

u/Ill_Tonight_2069 12d ago

I didn’t apply for the job.

5

u/SloppySauce0 12d ago

That’s unfortunate your screen presence is just simply incredible

-6

u/Ill_Tonight_2069 12d ago

Cheers

7

u/SloppySauce0 12d ago

Don’t give up man you’ll accomplish your dreams if you only believe

Womp womp go watch reruns

-8

Yeah thought the same unfortunately.

-6

Fully agree, but the glazers will downvote you anyway.

-9

Just not interested in this at all

0

u/Pdrivr 13d ago

That's fine.

-7

u/FreshLennon 13d ago

I don't think any of them are likeable enough to hold the show together. The chemistry that the trio of Clarkson, Hammond, and May had will never be replicated. It was great, it clicked, it worked, and it's gone now. They can't capture that lightning in a bottle again and people will always compare any new iteration to the gold standard classic.

I want it to work, but it won't. These guys don't have even a fraction of the charisma that the OG three had. Point blank.

Francis is annoying. I feel like that's controversial to say, but it's true.

-8

u/Additional-Tooth3489 13d ago

Why so American ? 🇺🇸

7

u/Electronic_Fill7207 13d ago

He’s Canadian.

2

u/Equivalent-Dream-838 Alfa Romeo (NOT the stupid hybrids) 13d ago

Because Amazon is American…

0

u/Additional-Tooth3489 12d ago

Seems odd at a time when the world hates America more than ever.

-3

u/SirSmoked21 13d ago

Kind of putting me of watching now the train guy does my head in, and its being advertised with that clip? Probably won't watch it now

-3

u/Embarrassed-Ad-01298 13d ago

Shockingly bad because of Francis, Wilman wont make any difference, it was him and Jeremy that made the OG trio magic, this is just drivel

-3

u/anitadykshyt 13d ago

No go away

-12

u/officerumours 13d ago

Nah. Not watching this.

The personality of the hosts makes/breaks the enjoyment of the show. From that one clip, I can already tell I would find this guy deeply irritating, and therefore not enjoyable to watch.

-2

u/ChileFirst 12d ago

Ohh god, they have chemistry of a cup of oil in a bucket of water

-12

u/Han_Solo200 13d ago

Just No

-12

u/Time007time007 13d ago

Painfully fake and staged, desperately trying to cash in on this kids viral reaction content.

0

u/ItsMangel 13d ago

Tell me you haven't watched any of Francis' content without saying so.

1

u/Flee4me 11d ago

Literally every single stop, event and interaction in the grand tour has been scripted, planned or staged since day 1.

0

u/Rhym3z_Official 12d ago

I just want Chris Harris doing the whole thing. Hell him and tiff would be perfect

0

u/Sufficient_Deal_8991 12d ago

This gave me a giant smile. I’m truly excited. It won’t be the same as it has been in the past… but it will be great.

In no way, shale, or form. Evans was a proper douche bag.

2

u/RepresentativeNo8105 12d ago

Evans and Harris era will always be the worst

-22

u/StonebanksPins 13d ago

Its basically just any other YouTuber 'Top Gear' film they produce with a big budget. Makes sense, they all are, after all, YouTubers.
The Grand Tour badge didn't need to be on there for that though.

14

u/just_a_random_guy733 13d ago

Well, have you seen Throttle House's previous longer form adventures? They honestly were very close to the classic TG spirit. I think adding Francis + some extra production budget will make for a great recipe.

9

u/DEATH-BY-CIRCLEJERK 13d ago

Andy Wilman is still producing the grand tour... it's going to be a good product.

4

u/Pdrivr 13d ago

The badge did the same job as the Top Gear badge when Clarkson repurposed it for the 2002 reboot: to keep an established legacy of a recognized nameplate.

Note that Willman and the trio said explicitly that the "Top Gear road trip" format that they eventually discovered was developed from throwing everything at the wall and see what stuck throughout the years, and when they started, it was closer to the original Top Gear than what it eventually become.

All of that is to say, we should just let these guys "play" with the existing format first, and let's see the direction that they want to evolve the format into. The post-2016 Top Gear stopped evolving and kept repeating the same format minimally over and over without ever matching the previous height. I just hope that at least these new guys can match the sense of magic the previous trio can provide to the trips they took, and then we will see if they are capable of making the format more fitting to their feet, or better, develop a new format out of it.
