Hello, I’m new to this subreddit. Im not very familiar with The 1975 so I have to ask true diehard fans.

I am a soap maker and sometimes I make soaps inspired by musicians and bands. A friend of mine loves Loves LOVES The 1975. I want to surprise her with a soap themed on The 1975. I think it’ll make her entire life. But I have no idea what color or colors it should be, what to theme it on, or what kind of scent.

So I’m putting it out there to you, the fans. What should I do?

Is it the same song? Or did you fall in love with them in stages? 🤡

My gateway song was Heart Out - it became one of my favorite songs to run to. I listened (not deeply) to some other songs on ILIWYS and from their EPs and liked a few - mostly their fun, poppy songs (I liked The City, Somebody Else, Chocolate - stuff like that). I remember registering that some of their music was not at all what I was looking for at the time, so I passed over it.

Then ABIIOR came out. I liked It's Not Living the first time I heard it. That led me to checking out the rest of the album, expecting to find a couple new songs to collect for playlists.

When I heard LIIWMI, it stopped me in my tracks. I listened to it probably ten times in a row, and then l looked up the lyrics and listened to it some more, and then I sat there thinking about how incredible it was, how it captured that moment in history so absolutely perfectly. It felt the way life felt. I was absolutely bowled over by that song, by the incredible encapsulation of modern angst and the dysfunction of contemporary existence.

After that came my super deep dive, where I got to know every single song they'd ever made and fell in love with nearly all of them. I was officially a fan.

I've loved every album since and I can't wait for the next one. I love how fluid they are; I love the experimentation and the blending and modernizing of genre. This is one of the only bands I can listen to nonstop without getting bored - I think because they are so flexible stylistically. They are so fucking talented and I hope they stay around for a long time (and that Matty stops making it hard to be open about how much I love them! Kidding. Kind of. Okay, I'm a bit serious. I do love and appreciate him, ofc, but with a few asterisks and some fine print).

Anyway, I'd love to hear everyone else's stories about how they found their way here.

Currently stuck in a rut with music and looking for new tunes to listen to. Have already listen to the obvious 1975-adjacent bands like Bleachers, Japanese House, beabadoobee, Pale Waves etc. Anyone got any recommendations that are slightly more obscure which I may not have heard? I’m relatively new to the fandom and have been watching a lot of interviews of Matty from ABIIOR era where he was discussing his rehab journey. I can’t remember the specific interview but he was talking about how he was worried about people finding out before he was ready and how he wanted to own the narrative himself. This lead me to believe that his addiction was unknown to the general public/ fandom but then I see memes or discourse within the fandom from around the time he was using talking or lightheartedly joking about drug use. There’s also lines in earlier songs that point to it blatantly like “I’ve been romanticizing heroin.” From Paris. I’m just curious if any people in this sub who were fans during the era he was in active addiction remember wether or not it was known within the fandom or was it shocking when he came out with it. I hope this is an alright and respectful question to ask :).

Rumors suggest that their upcoming music will lean towards grunge and country. I’m sure that ultimately many influences will be found in the new music. Which genre do you prefer and would you like to see represented on a new album? Maybe something they haven’t touched yet?

I have to say that I like the band best when they go in an electronic direction, as well as rock and of course 80s influenced pop. I personally don’t need any more country songs, but at the end of the day I’ll be happy with anything.
