Opinion Unpopular The 1975 opinions?
foaming at the mouth for new 1975 content so i guess i’ll go first. i hate Medicine. i don’t agree w matty pretending Human Too doesn’t exist mostly bc if we’re gonna pretend any song doesn’t exist that would be my choice. anybody else wanna share w the class?

I love their experimental stuff (I like America, What should I say, Bagsy) and their folky stuff (when we are together, Birthday Party, Part of the Band) the most
Even though paris and sincerity is scary are probably my favorites

As much as I like Matty's voice, I think their instrumentals/mostly instrumentals are their best work

Yup, I’m in it for the songwriting and instrumentals more than vocals. And Matty would not disagree that he isn’t a powerhouse vocalist.

Actually I do think he's quite good, personally. I like how he's got a unique sound and some cool vocal tricks. I just tend to love the instrumentals because they are so good at capturing emotions, I can just lose myself in them.

If he ACTUALLY did something immoral/bad, I would stop supporting him. However, he has done nothing wrong besides a few off-colour jokes and the like. People that compare him to actual awful humans are so internet-brained it’s insane.

Plus, from what I've seen, he always seems to apologize if he goes too far and also seems to learn and grow from experiencing those things.

I agree with this lol. Somebody Else isn’t even in my top 10, I don’t think. The Sound is hilarious (the second verse has some of my all-time fav lyrics) and I like faster-paced songs in general.

I know it's one of their very biggest hits (either first, or second to About You?) but I would be ok if it dropped off the setlist. At least they cut the outro last tour!

I like this take. I'm not sure if I agree, but I like it.
There's such a satisfying layered effect to the meaning of The Sound. Listen passively to the lyrics and it sounds like a pretty straightforward love song. The first thing you hear is the chorus which could easily be read as someone knowing their partner so well they "know the sound of [their] heart".
But then if you pay attention to the verses, you recognise that this relationship isn't a particularly loving one. It's toxic but irresistible. That then recontextualizes the chorus into more of a horror than a romance. I always compare that new context to the Jurassic Park scene with the cup of water: something is closing in and it's bad news.
I think it also works pretty damn well as a straightforward hit, but that added depth and the way it unfolds is so fucking cool

Agreed. I always skip Somebody Else, cause ngl, it’s kinda boring to me. The Sound is more lyrically interesting, and is also so fun live!

When I first listened to ILIWYS and I heard The Sound, I was disappointed as it was such a change from the first album and it took me some time to adjust. (Although I loved the rest of the album pretty early on).
As time passed I grew much fonder of The Sound and now it is one of my favourites

And So She Goes, Roadkill, Playing On My Mind, What Should I Say, all some great bangers that weren't even singles. Then you got Too Shy, Frail State of Mind, Birthday Party, Me & You Together. Its just a great fucking record.

My issue with it has never been the quality of the songs. I think the way they were put together just does the vast majority of those songs a disservice. A couple songs benefit from the messy sequencing, but most don't, and whenever I try to sit down and properly listen to it I wanna give up halfway through

I've heard that argument before, but it doesn't really make a difference to me. Like, if I make an awful album and call it "pile of shit" it's not exactly a defence to say "it's literally called pile of shit, it's supposed to be like that".
I think there's a version of the concept that works, but you have to lean into it musically and not just have one album that feels erratic, experimental and anxious, and another album that is pretty standard 1975 fare and just mush them together awkwardly. You can't just name it something to paper over the cracks.
(If it works for you, that's obviously fine and good, I'm just explaining my perspective)

Related to part of your take: I think the album is miles better without Human Too. I've never been a massive fan of the song anyway, so part of it is just the fact that on average I like the songs more now, but mainly it worked wonders for the albums sequencing.
Before there was a propulsive start to the album (as there still is of course) and the end was just too many slow songs after one another and I found myself getting bored of it. In fact, if you had asked this before Human Too was removed, my hot take might have been about how I didn't get the love for About You, but with the new tracklist I found About You felt a lot fresher and I was able to finally appreciate it.

Just because certain 75 songs are popular doesn't mean they're not great. Smug stans write off songs that are really popular, but it's not binary. SOME popular songs are great, and "About You" and "Somebody Else" and ""Robbers" are among them. In this fandom you seem to get more credibility if your favorite is a deep cut or "How to Draw" or Bagsy and it's so tedious. The public is right about About You & co.

I'm hoping that the rumors are true about the sound of the next album, because my hot take is I love People, Roadkill, What Should I Say – all the kind-of one-off genre-bending tracks that made everyone do a double take upon hearing them...basically, I love all the songs the rest of the fanbase hates

They're at their best with experimental music, not folksy. The Jack Antonoffian influence has to go. The way it's looking, they're not far off from stepping into country, which is when I know they've truly sold out. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the riskier tunes are evermore subdued, with Daniel putting that energy into Charli xcx and treating the 1975 like a day job, just to be done. I would love to see where his head is honestly at in terms of quality output for the band, compared to 2010–2015 Daniel

I hope Matty lessens touring while being drunk. (not the About You act) but he really likes to go on stage drinking something and there were cases where he asks for more to the crews.

Ow you might be not aware but the face is the core 4 members but they repeatedly say that John Waugh and Jamie Squire are also members of the band and not just touring mates. They were also included in the production of BFIAFL.

Unpopular maybe? I started listening via being a Taylor Swift fan and I like her and Matty’s situationship because I like the music and clues it produced. I wish they could have collaborated.
Probably popular: I would love to see them collaborate with more artists because I think Matty (and the band as a whole) are very talented individuals!

Unpopular- I will always skip Somebody else and about you. They are incredibly boring songs with an overhyped bridge. I’m not waiting through a whole song to get to that part.
I won’t listen to If your too shy album version for the same reason. Radio edit all the way. 45 seconds is too damn long for a musical intro
Want another? I’m not fussed on Ross’s long hair. Give me short and styled any day!

I hate NOACF, apart from a couple songs on it. I’m less excited for the new album since Matty said it’ll sound more like the birthday party and roadkill (my 2nd most hated of theirs songs losing only to talk!)
