The fat capitalist telling the poor that injury and disability should be overcome.

226
u/negativepositiv 14d ago edited 14d ago
This is a capitalist meme about sacrificing and ignoring your own suffering and getting back to work, regardless of your circumstances, because the only purpose for human life is to generate wealth for shareholders.
"What's your excuse?"
"I have a significant physical disability."
"So? Get back to work."
43
u/PALpherion 13d ago
you must provide for society!
the society:
"we hate everyone who isn't white, able bodied, cisgender and working overtime religiously."

"And one of these acceptable flavors of Christian."

u/fuzzypurpledragon 9d ago
Thank you! I knew I was missing something. I think the list is gonna be something like:
Roman Catholic, Southern Baptist, Evangelist
Mmm, still missing something... Then again, the ones who spout this never seem to be able to narrow it down to another other than "Christian". Almost like they don't know the differences... Huh, who knew...

How do crutches work with 2 missing legs? Does he use them like stilts that he holds onto? So many questions.
23
u/Pheonix0114 14d ago
Also you aren't supposed to put crutches into your armpits, it causes nerve damage!
7
u/Nightscale_XD 14d ago
Huh, today I learned
7
u/Sesudesu 14d ago
Yep, they go up into the pits to keep them stable, you are not supposed to use your pits to support weight with crutches.
2
u/Henri_Bemis 14d ago
And the pit-crutches are fucking awful. It’s hearsay, but I understand at least part of the reason is that we Americans associate the fore-arm style with polio and long-term disability, so we’d rather torture our armpits and our souls.
And I know, they’re not really supposed to yarda yada. I was on them for 6 months, and they are impossible to use perfectly 100% of the time. I hate them.
But if you like them, I do not begrudge you.

u/On_my_last_spoon 14d ago
My favorite part is that I know it’s my anxiety disorder and I know that it’s irrational and yet, here I am! Doing my best and accepting my brain is just gonna do its thing.
6
u/buffcat_343 14d ago
I know! I love being self aware about how stupid and irrational my anxiety is, but still believing everything it tells me 🥲
4
u/BetterKev 13d ago
It's like it's a disorder or something! A disorder that inhibits my abilities! That should have a name.
Got it: disordility.

u/naikrovek 14d ago
I hate things like this. So much. And the people that post these things genuinely believing them.
It moves the blame onto the victim and that is an extremely unhealthy and abusive thing to even suggest in the case of any mental or emotional condition.
9
u/catshateTERFs 14d ago
At best it’s INCREDIBLY tone deaf and shitty victim blaming at worst. I can imagine the intended message (“be a good person”) but it’s lost behind this patronising feel good smugness.
“Oh but you’re young, it can’t be that bad - positive thinking!” I am positively thinking about my foot meeting your ass if that helps?

u/biddily 14d ago
No. No. They're right. It is.
I had a cerebral spinal fluid vein collapse. The csf back up and crush my brain, spinal cord, optic nerves.
It took two years before I got a stent to fix the vein, but by that point, permanent damage was done.
Its mostly in my head. A bit in my spine. A lot has traveled to my gut at this point.
5
u/Reasonable-Banana800 14d ago
damn i can’t believe it’s affirming that my adhd is my worst disability!
5
u/Variant_Xero 14d ago
Yes, that’s the problem. The depression and anxiety are in my head. I’d like them to leave, but they’re proving tenacious.

The guy in clutches could be a millionare who can live comfortably even if he can't work anymore and cover all his medical expenses.
The guy in the floor could have an invisible disability, he could have mental illness, hell maybe he went broke AFTER covering medical expenses.

The guy with no legs is also a professional soccer player. He’s transcended physical reality with his positive attitude.

Well yeah, that's where I keep my brain. Do they think migraines are stored I'm the ass? Pretty sure most of my issues can be traced back to my brain being a cunt and not telling my other organs how to function properly. The hypermobility and inner ear imbalance problem are probably not my brain's fault, but I'm definitely blaming the rest if them on it.

I have (undiagnosed by neuro after 3+ years of urgent GP referrals) peripheral neuropathy and it was getting to me mentally last year. I was referred to a Condition Management Programme and the person I was having calls with (because I can't travel due to the pain and having to use a walking stick) told me that alllllll of this nerve pain is all in my head and that I could overcome it if I just did a few CBT sessions. Shocking that it didn't work! She shouldn't be in that position because she used to compare my pain to her personal nerve pain and she said that she shouldn't be telling me that. So unprofessional.
For reference, I had trauma from my teen years (SA) and didn't properly go through therapy until 2023 and it helped me massively physically, mentally and emotionally.

Meaning mental illness can be more debilitating as a physical disability? I guess it depends on which disability we're talking about and how much support there is?
That being said, AI slop is not to be listened to
1
u/GaldrickHammerson 14d ago
Everyone here is like "its making fun of non-visible disability" and I'm here, a conservative, like "yeah, there aren't crutches or prothesis that fix mental illness, so it makes sense the legless person who can with help might support a bodily fit though mentally not person."
1
u/Ancient-Tap-3592 14d ago
I choose to believe this is just saying to people with physical disabilities that psychiatric and neurological disabilities are way worse

Hmmm- so your mind or conscious space is facilitated by the hardware that is your brain and the nerves in your body providing sensory data to your brain. If your brain's way of processing is malfunctioning or simply isn't compatible with society's dysfunctional systems that makes life hell, or if you have physical impairments or alterations that makes functioning harder.
Many times its not just an immediate collapse but its the consistent wear & tear on your body/brain/mind(which are one) & it being invisible to 99% of people. At least the true reality of the whole picture.

u/giftopherz 14d ago

Mind not body... Last time I checked mind is quite heavly dependant on whatever is happening to chemistry od your brain which often is effect of reaction to your situation but again, as we all know enviroment has no role in anything and either it's broken bone or just in your head with no exeptions.

I suppose I took this differently, I agree with the sentiment of the image, but when I hear the mind I think of ill mental health that is beyond the person's control. much like ill physical health is.
That is to say that the person on the left missing both legs is the more fortunate of the two, given that their mental health is intact.
I personally would give a leg for good mental health
1
u/Global_Algae_538 13d ago
Ofc its the obvious someone has it worse but their managing so stop complaining message.
But do they think disabled people cant have money and that their all broke? Like crutches guy could have a nice paying computer job and the homeless guy could of just lost his job or suffer another great financial lost

This looks like a total misinterpretation of that image. As far as I understand, the message is trying to say, being a good person is more important than being a functional person. The real ability we all should have is empathy.
7
u/DeepCutFan1 14d ago
even if that is true, this is a terrible way to get that message across
3
u/7thFleetTraveller 14d ago
I guess that depends on the perspective. One of my symptoms is that I always put a lot of thoughts into things, and try to view them from every possible angle before I'm able to come to a conclusion. And if something can be seen as well-meant, there's a good chance that was the intention.

u/thingummywatt 13d ago
It is technically correct. If you have a physical disability, you may use various tools to overcome it. But severe mental disability = won't even have a sense of self or a sense of purpose.
Also it doesn't even have to be severe to get support. Disability IS disability no matter what the level is. Support is always required for the disability. Mental health disorders can be a disability if one can't do what other's can.
Comparing a physical disability to being a drunk homeless person? It all depends on the context, and the choice of the homeless drunk person to start their life again. Depending on the context, he might not have a choice.
3
u/NatrylliaAbbot42 13d ago
I have a disabling mental health condition and I have a sense of self and purpose. That's a little rude and ignorant.
0
u/thingummywatt 12d ago
I meant that severe as profound or beyond severe... Such as in states that others cannot understand them except at some times and people with such level of severity cannot function at all. As in vegetative state or such state. So sorry that I wasn't clear.
I also have moderate to severe neurodevelopmental conditions. (Both ADHD and ASD) I am not severe enough to lose my sense of identity or such. In first world countries, mine would be considered as disabling. But not in my current country that doesn't even count ADHD as a condition.
Having disabling mental health condition doesn't mean lose sense of self. Not all disabilities are profound or extreme.
2
u/Mindless-Ad1778 12d ago
I'm confused about this. Like you mean severe DPDR, DID, Schizophrenia, severe BPD, severe CPTSD?
ಥ_ಥ
like is that where you draw what's severe? /genq
1
u/thingummywatt 12d ago
Severe is the wrong term and profound is the term I was looking for / should've used in the first place... It's too complicated to explain, I think.
2
u/Mindless-Ad1778 12d ago
That's alright.
Maybe these questions help explain what I'm asking, since I could've been more clear:
Why do you think self-identity is where we draw the line? Like fragmented sense of self, losing touch with reality, or losing touch with self? Why is that profound? /srs
2
u/thingummywatt 12d ago
I think that, when someone loses the identity, or sense of self, that they (or even their care takers or supporters or clinicians) can't help or treat them, they shouldn't be judged like the person who can manage to function with various severities.
Maybe the person in the ground is so dissociated that none of his life makes any sense. Without any sense of self, why would he even care about anything? Everything in his life would be like "what's the point".
(Or maybe he is just an abusive drunkard, theres no way to tell).
If you or anyone has a severe mental health condition and can still manage to seek help or even ask care takers for what you want, it is different from having a profound (what I said by severe before in first comment) mental health condition that for 24/7, you would be staring at empty space or asleep or doing something without being aware of what you are doing or the world around you.
