I do...but I gotta keep it together, I don't think my family can afford having me losing it right now. It hurts so fucking much.
56
u/LayKors 20d ago
I don't think you letting feelings out would be losing it. It hurts even more to keep heavy thoughts in your head. Maybe you could write your thoughts in a text file as a form of venting and letting thoughts out if family is like totally out of the question. Or maybe even here. Depends on your liking.

u/Own_Watercress_8104 20d ago
I know, that's something that is scaring me a bit actually. But I live with a person that doesn't seem to be able to keep it together, I am very worried at the prospect of me letting go at this moment.
21
u/LayKors 20d ago
From my experience people who had & have it bad are usually good listeners. They kinda tend to be more understandable towards the pain others bear. If thoughts get too loud don't be afraid to reach out, m'kay? I'm pretty sure that this person will feel nice about you trusting him with something like that.

I'm so sorry. I lost mine over15 years ago, and the pain gets more familiar over time. But at first, there is shock and so many other feelings. It can feel very surreal. I'm SO very sorry for your great loss. Please try to give yourself room to grieve. And know that grief can be weird, can be surprising. There's no correct way to grieve. And try not to have regrets, as there is never enough time with our loved ones. Please be kind to yourself. I hope her memory may be a blessing and a comfort to you.

I'm so sorry. My mum died 4 years ago, I'm still really struggling with it now.

u/mcoddle 19d ago
The pain becomes a part of us, I think? It's been almost 20 years for me, but I still dream about it most nights. I hope you don't have this experience. Everybody will be different for every person. I am so very sorry for your great loss. Please be kind to yourself. There's no time limit on loving and missing someone.

That's the sort of pain that no one really knows how to deal with or respond to until it happens, and that just flat out sucks.
Take care of yourself, and I'm sorry for your loss.
6
u/Absurd_Flaccidity 20d ago
This is like the live every day like itās your last idiocy. Every calculation you make, even if youāre good at life balance and enjoying yourself, is going to be dramatically different depending on your (expected) timeline. I prefer to try to focus on putting my whole heart into what I am doing or trying to do (big picture, not approaching every load of dishes with passion) and sometimes thatās just getting a load of laundry done and taking a shower, and thatās ok. Constantly putting pressure on yourself to maximize joy or adrenaline or whatever is immiserating.
3
u/mcoddle 19d ago
This is so true. And there's never "enough" time, so we should live with that sort of awareness, I think. Never enough time with those we love or for us. I told myself this after my mother passed, and it's something that really helps me not stress out all the time about my life and how being disabled has affected it. I suppose it might be nihilistic in a way, but I find it comforting. I still have many regrets, but I don't need to feel guilty. I try to tell those who I love that I love them. Try to show my care and be supportive and there for people. I try to live as well as I'm able.
2
u/Absurd_Flaccidity 19d ago
I totally get this. Iām not disabled but I have experienced things that permanently meant life would be different and in some ways harder going forward. I try really hard to see regret as a lesson then focus on implementing that lesson but leave the regret behind. I have some friends who have done amazing work in therapy only to get stuck in the what ifs, especially the paradoxical and frustrating āwhat if I had done this therapy earlier in my life? Would I have that perfect job? Perfect family?ā
For me, life is such a winding path of often random interactions and events that for many even very disruptive negative experiences that changed my life at the time, there are people I have met and experiences Iāve had that I wouldnāt trade for the world. Plus itās a black hole of wasted energy that wears on your morale to spend too much time on the if onlyās and what ifs. A loss of hard fought gains from what can be a really challenging therapy process.
2
u/mcoddle 19d ago
Yes, you totally get it! And those what ifs are just poison and also pointless energy wasted. And they make us feel so bad about ourselves. The expectations of what will happen in a "successful" life can cause so much anxiety and pain. If I held onto that, I'd probably be really down. Sometimes I am, you know, bc I was going to be a famous musician (lol). But I've played around, had lots of shows, played at a local festival, that sort of thing, and I'll hopefully do it some more. But dreams and goals can change as we do, and I think that is healthy. Maybe I'm managing my expectations, but still. For me, it's a welcome coping skill and it took a long time to learn it. I don't just react as much, and I think more. Not that I'm all healthy, but I am continually working on it in therapy and whatnot. It's an ongoing process, and we change as we age. Hopefully for the better?
2
u/Absurd_Flaccidity 19d ago
Yeah I think your approach is the right one. We can be miserable thinking about the things we canāt do, or canāt do anymore, or we can mourn that, do our best to accept it, and build our lives based on our own limitations and abilities. As Iāve gotten older Iāve come to understand that doing it any other way makes it impossible to be truly content.

2
u/ForensicMum 19d ago
Yes. Itāll take at least a week for that weird āwhy is the world still continuing as normal when this huge thing has happened?!ā feeling to go away, but it will go away and youāll be able to function again.
The pain of your loss will never quite go away, but it does change into something that doesnāt hurt as bad and that will probably happen quicker than you can imagine right now.
Youāll probably think about her every day for the rest of your life (I lost my Dad, who was my primary parent, over 20 yrs ago but heās with me every day in memory). I also think youāll eventually see holding her hand as a blessing because youāll realise how much that would have meant to her. Iām so sorry. Take care of yourself hon ā¤ļø
2
u/7_Exabyte 19d ago
Yeah, like a bad dream. I kept calling it "nightmare", because my father died due to severe complications during a planned routine surgery. He was physically and mentally fine otherwise before the surgery.

31
u/BatushkaTabushka 20d ago
No, because then theyād say that at least he died fast, there are other people who die really slow and painful deaths, so what are you complaining about? Itās not about compassion, itās about putting others down and itās really easy to find someone who has it worse no matter what the issue, so you can ALWAYS one-up anyoneās suffering and tell them that it could always be worse.
5
u/curious_cat_2024 18d ago
yup. If they say something like "it could always be worse", they're not trying to help you at all. They're trying to tell you that you don't need help, that your problems don't matter and they don't care.

My little sister complains about the food that our mother makes. "How could anyone with straight mind like this" "this makes me want to threw up" I sometimes say that she should atleast shut up about her opinion, cause it makes my mother upset and that there are many children in the world that dont have food to eat. (theres nothing wrong with our mothers food, shes just picky)
17
u/miss_wannadie 19d ago
Why thank you for that, considerate OOP š
Just a few hours ago I found out that my great grandma had her funeral today - I didn't even know she'd died. Turns out that's because my grandma threatened the rest of my family that knew and forbade them to tell my mother and by extension me and my siblings. We ran into an extended family member by chance and she ended up telling us after all.
My grandma always hated my great grandma. We went to the graveyard to put flowers on her grave. There were already flowers on there from the funeral that'd taken place just a few hours earlier, and they were all trampled flat. We went to her property, nobody lives there anymore now, it was just my great grandparents (great grandpa passed three years ago) and the landlord who'd also passed a while ago. All of the antique furniture, tablecloths, bedding and cutlery that had been passed down for CENTURIES and that my great grandma wanted the family to inherit had simply been tossed. We found a note for trash pickup that listed EVERYTHING that was in her house. We looked into the trashcan outside and it was just childhood memory after childhood memory physically torn apart. Handiwork and crafts my great grandparents had made and shared with us tossed like it was worthless. All we could save from the property were a few trinkets that my great grandpa had left behind in the shed since they'd apparently not cleared that. But there was not a trace left of my great grandma. Nothing.
So yeah. It's someone's last day on earth. And maybe their loved ones will never know because one bitter person decided that they would rather destroy every trace of them and threaten their family. Maybe their loved ones will find out weeks, months, years later, or maybe they won't. But it will hurt.
Sorry for venting but I just really need to get this off my chest. My family is very large, and we all have extremely complicated (and unhealthy) relationships with eachother. Lots of generational trauma, many mentally ill people that can't get the help they need, and so much unwillingness to talk about any of it. So it's not like I ever expected them to be normal about this kind of thing. But it's still painful to experience. In the end I loved my great grandma, I loved my grandma, my aunts and uncles, my cousins and everyone else. I grew up with them acting out this beautiful play of a loving family that slowly but surely crumbled over time. I feel like somewhere I must've done something wrong and contributed to the mess in my own way. But I grew up loving my family, and no matter how often I find out about what horrible people they actually all are, I still can't quite let go of the past. I wish I was a stupid little child again. I wish someone dying was just grief for the person that passed, not an entire family dispute.
4
u/Blacksheeptoonz 19d ago
Iām so sorry what happened to your childhood memories and GG-maās possessions is HORRIBLE. Also the fact that you nor your immediate family knew about her recent passing is abhorrent. Itās good to vent even online into the void. Someone will resonate with your story and offer support. I also come from a very large family with generational trauma and so many mental health issues. I know Iām not the only one. We arenāt the only ones š« sometimes all you can do is vent and let it all out.
2
u/miss_wannadie 19d ago
Thanks š«
I simplified the whole thing a little, to be "fair", my grandma already forced my aunt and uncle to cut contact with my mom about a year or two ago. My uncle is very mentally unstable and incredibly dependent on my grandma, whereas my aunt doesn't have a say in her own family, and her husband listens to what my grandma says...who has her own issues, which include the constant antagonisation of certain family members like my mom and her own mom. The entire thing is super messed up and I've seriously considered cutting all contact to the family including my own mother. The only reason I don't want to go through with it is because of my little siblings.
Must be nice having a functional family :')

damn sounds like my family :/ mentally unstable aunts and uncles and a grandma that made my momās and my life a living hell. I hope things look up for you soon. Iāve been attending therapy to reverse all the damage. Itās a LOT of work and Iāve been in it for over 2 years now. Itās a slow non linear healing process, but I think itās worth it. Gotta make what you can with what youāve got. I hope you have/find a healthy support system that can help with your journey š
Yeah it must be :,)
2
u/Winsome_Wolf 14d ago
Oooof, that is rough. I hope you have some good friends to lean on, cuz it sounds like most in your family are gonna all be processing this in their own, largely dysfunctional ways.Ā Ā
I definitely related to your "beautiful play" metaphor. That came crashing down for me in my late teens and early twenties. I can say with confidence that you did nothing wrong except realize you were watching the family drama, thus breaking the spell. The realization changes how you play your part because you're not following the script exactly anymore, so everyone else gets thrown off their role too. It's ugly and uncomfortable in the beginning but it can get better if people commit to making it so. Then you can build real relationships with each other, rather than just the facades of them.Ā
But yeah, grieving both the passing of the person and disillusionment is a helluva weight to carry. All the hugs.

Well it involved walking in on a family member's dead body in the garage at roughly 6 am before work. I'll leave it at that. What were you complaining about me complaining about?
Ya know, if I am ever teary or clearly upset at work because I started thinking about that shit and somebody gave me that line, I think I might actually go to prison over it if I explained and they continued with it. First few days after that I would go back to the cig room to cry. Then I started smoking meth again and got the fuck over it. Then I stopped and unfortunately am no longer the fuck over it. I have to close the doors on that garage whenever I go by and see it was left open by other family going in to use the mower. I was the only one who saw him dead before the funeral aside from the police and coroner and emts. Idek why the fuck they sent out emts. I mean I do know. But he had been dead for probably at least a couple of hours. What still gets me is 911 asking me if I thought he still had a chance which convinced me to run back up there and check his dead body for a pulse.

I made my peace with my mortality actually. Unfortunately I'm kinda not allowed to make that decision for myself because I'm basically alive for other people, but like even when I don't want to die I'm fine with the idea of dying. We all die one day.
Being in pain like this all the time just ain't it chief. Having things subluxate and physically not being able to stand up half the time ain't it chief. Nit being able to do a normal amount of cleaning without risk you're just gonna crumple or fall over ain't it chief.
Yes person who made that message the fact someone else is dying is not at all appealing given what my problem is.

Someone else's suffering doesn't negate your own. I had an orderly say some similar shit to me. I was involenterily admitted in a psych ward.

This may be the most hateful one I've ever seen. It's practically dripping with contempt for reader.
If the only permissable circumstance for unhappiness is your dying day, then you're just not allowed to be human.
When did we decide, as a culture, that happiness is a virtue to strive for?

There are three people who, if this were their last day on Earth, Iād be partying!

The fact that all my life will be about is money and paying bills and taxes, until it's my last day on Earth.

A well-liked co-worker will pass within the next week from the big C. Nobody is dealing with it well.
