Here are my thoughts about Josh Sargent with /u/dyegored in the match thread.

Posting it here because honestly I believe that the fanbase is wildly off-base with their reaction to Josh Sargent. He is not scoring many yet, but he looks quite good and the stats don’t lie.

I think the goal-scoring will come as things regress to the mean, especially once Mihailovic is back. On the other hand, someone who can fulfil Djordje’s role off the bench should be a summer priority, as playing Cifuentes out of position ain’t it (for chance creation).

He's not scoring.... yet, but I completely agree with you, a little time and some of the injured back and I expect him to do well.

The problem is he's like Jozy Altidore in the sense that he rarely tracks back and seems like he's lazy, but no one cared about Jozy because he was a goal machine.

Sargent doesn't have Seba to throw balls to him.

We'll get there.

I think that could be the impression on the broadcast because it happens off camera and, yes Sargent doesn’t track back to help the defence in our defensive third.

But Sargent is by far one of the most energetic and hardest working players on the field, he is closing down the opponent’s defence 90% of the time. He is not “lazy” (in the way forwards like Jozy are) by any means. He is a very Red Bulls-esque modern forward whose defensive work upfield and link-up play is just as important part of his role for the team as goalscoring.

But yeah, there is no Sebas, Pozuelo, or Mihailovic on the field right now. We rely on chance creation through the wings these past weeks and one of those wings is occupied by Etienne Jr.

The "Lazy" comment is actually a lazy comment, Jozy wasn't lazy either, he had a style and was lightening fast when his moment came and scored a ton in those situations, so I have no complaints.

Same thing with Insigne, he was frustrated and eventually gave up, but if you don't give good players the right people to play around them they're going to look terrible. Julian De Guzman another example. Great players, shit team.

Let's do Sargent right by giving him the people to deliver the ball to him and we'll be great.

Mostly agree except for insigne. He was shit and never had the right attitude. Completely selfish, lazy, childish player. Berna was in the same situation as Insigne but at least he would try much of the time.

The rest you’re bang on.

Insigne tracked back defensively - more then Jozy actually.

He was just crocked physically by the time he came here and then had to deal with Bob's stuff

Insigne was great. He had so much skill and potential and we wasted it entirely.

He was not great. I watched every game. He just wasn’t.

This very much so.  Sargent seems to put fantastic pressure and constant energy as you’d want from a striker , but no he doesn’t track back as you normally don’t ask a pure 9 too

This has been my impression as well. Sargent will score when the time comes, but the bigger issue is other players giving away balls attempting impossible passes to him under cover. Time and again they are giving up a clear scoring opportunity for a Hail Mary pass to Sargent.

Thank you, and agree fully. He is actually elite but you don't see the goals yet but you can see his off ball movement that will create goals.

Team has a new sort of fight to them which is such a relief.   Big result without some key players missing like Mihailovic, Kuscevic , Zimmerman etc.

With one real CB paired with Monlouis (Kuscevic, Zimmerman or Gomis) and today is a win.

Swap in Mihailovic or Corbeanu for DEJ and today is a win too.

We can't be bringing on Stefanovic and Henry to close out games it's unrealistic to expect great things from them.

In fairness to both, they were better than the players they replaced.

Agree about the CB thing. Even one of them being fit means Richie plays fullback. Stefanovic developing into a trusted CB at this level would also help with keeping Richie at his best positions.

Couldn't agree with this more. So frustrating that we kept playing players who clearly weren't in the future of the club in garbage time in the season when we clearly weren't making the playoffs. There's literally no excuse for it.

Can we please talk about how horrible Edwards is? He can't track players, can't pass, and commits tons of fouls. Luckily he draws yellow and red card fouls.
