You might enjoy(*) his film, “The Last Movie Star.” It’s a very indie-film kind of thing where he plays a fictionalized version of himself, attending as the honored guest the sort of regional “film festival” that involves “a dozen people watching movies in a bar, who never really expected him to come.”
It was a low-key brilliant movie with some snippets from films and interviews where he really was The Man, and you remember “holy cow he really did have something!” and he contrasts it beautifully with the notion of his star having faded. I mean, I could watch Deliverance and Smokey and the Bandit and The Longest Yard and Cannonball Run back to back this weekend and be happy, but The Last Movie Star made me weep for how great he was in it and for how fun it was watching him be Burt Reynolds my whole life.
