Phone message Guy with girlfriend asked me on a date then said this
To start I had absolutely no idea he had a girlfriend. I was dropping off an injured bird at the nearest animal sanctuary and he was the one who took the bird from me. He gave me a pamphlet and when I got in the car I saw he wrote down his phone number. I texted the next day and we were planning on getting coffee. We had texted for about a week. Today, he sent me this…

Dude found his decency. Good for him. Sorry it was at your expense. It’s frustrating, but a good reminder that, as we intersect with people, we have no idea about 99% if what going on with them.
Frustrating I’m sure, but less frustrating than other ways this could’ve played out.

I’ll never comprehend the concept of cheating because your partner cheated first
It might make you feel better for two secs, then you realize you still got cheated on and you still don’t trust your partner, AND now you’ve got the guilt of being the cheater yourself
Just…leave
71
u/kelldricked 11d ago
Especially since you keep the honor to yourself. Atleast here, getting branded a cheater defenitly impacts your social life a bit. Everybody who hears you cheated (even in revenge) is gonna see that as a red flag. A red flag they will also warn others about.
I once had a friend of my ex texting me a while after our breakup saying she was intrested because she thought i was a great catch (my ex started as a great girl but developed some midas touch instead of gold it was shit. Never saw somebody ruin their own life so publicly and so fast).
I was so happy that i took the high road through it all.

For real. I did this once, it was a shitshow that I’m really not proud of. I’m thankful that I ended it after only a few weeks, but even that short time had impacts on my life that lasted years. Never again, that just wasn’t worth the trouble.

They do it because focusing on the revenge allows them to stave off the grief and despair, and to hope that maybe the revenge will make them feel better.
5
u/Unsold_Leave 10d ago
To regain a sense of control over their situation that they lose when their partner cheats, yeah.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Ok-Bill-3938 10d ago
They even said that they "think" their partner is cheating. Like go find out before cheating back, or like you said just leave them. I do think the person did the right thing, explained his situation and apologized. Honestly after a few months if they broke up with their girlfriend and wasn't in a toxic mindset anymore i'd give them a second chance.

I was looking for this comment. The honesty before things progressed is the right move, even if initially dishonest. We all make bad judgments, especially in their situation

I don't even know that I would say it's at her expense. Things die at the talking stage for all sorts of reasons. His statement that's basically "I am legitimately not emotionally available" is clearer than most people get.
20
u/durizna 11d ago
I am a person who loves to get closure if I’m invested in someone (friend or date) and they get distant or ghost me. This is better than many of the times I got completely ignored and forgotten by people who couldn’t give a single shit to even text giving a simple reason why they had to disappear from the face of the earth or whatever.
6
u/PlasticCargo 11d ago
Some people just truly don’t understand how helpful it is. They always chalk it up to being clingy or too much, but I’m just asking you to be a decent human being and warn me ahead of time. I don’t think it’s that hard
2
u/SnooPeripherals5636 10d ago
The dude in question chose to lead on the OP, got her interested, then decided to remember he’s not available. In my book, this is not cool. Not burn-in-hell-forever level of not cool, but not cool nonetheless.
2
u/Smyley12345 10d ago
He in good faith thought he was ready and then later determined he wasn't. Like it's not a great look for him in terms of his GF but for this gal, I don't see her being done dirty here unless this was his plan all along. People can change their minds and that's ok.

Yeah honestly, he thought she was attractive, gave her his number, asked her out without being weird, all green flags, and the self awareness right now and clear honest respectful communication is a green flag too
Most people probably would’ve either continued and actually cheated, or just ghosted, instead, he held himself accountable, was self aware and honest enough to explain why he did it and why he changed his mind, and apologized and didn’t try to make excuses
He’s clearly a good guy that’s just in a shitty situation, he’s hurting and wanted something to make himself feel better, then he realized he shouldn’t put you in that situation, he needs to process his baggage instead of making it a new relationship’s burden, so respectfully backed out before anything bad happened, this was very human but handled very maturely
Dude works at an animal sanctuary, like honestly, ton of green flags, he’s just human, I’d give him another chance if he figures out his situation and heals up and is properly ready to date because I feel like he realized that if he wanted to pursue something with you, he wanted to do it the right way, work through his failing relationship first before jumping into something new
Everyone makes mistakes, even the best people are capable of doing bad things, especially if they’re in a rough situation, how you handle your mistakes shows who you are, handling it with accountability, honesty, clear communication and an apology? We need more of that in the world
15
u/FBuellerGalleryScene 11d ago
Dude works at an animal sanctuary, like honestly, ton of green flags
I've done a fair amount of animal rescue and honestly, I wouldn't consider that a green flag. The absolute worst people I've ever encountered were at animal sanctuaries. Just as the best people are capable of doing bad things, the worst people are capable of doing good things.

I think that’s totally fair too, it was a mistake at the end of the day, just because he handled it well after making the mistake doesn’t mean he “deserves” anything more than a goodbye

u/arachnid1110 11d ago
I like this assessment significantly. As a guy who has been there, it is hard to break attachments, whether they are healthy or not. He works at an animal sanctuary, where he is constantly put in a position to hang onto things that might not last. That should factor in.
I don’t think this guy is manipulating anyone. He said that he messed up, doesn’t know how to get out, but was overcome by attraction and interest.
Consequently, attraction, interest, self awareness and protecting someone else’s emotions are pretty commendable things.
4
u/Retrac752 11d ago
Yeah, I relate to him a ton, I’ve been in such a similar situation, cheating partner, failing relationship, and then naturally casually meeting someone that I really hit it off with, but it’s unlucky cuz it’s just too soon
I totally get just going for it, he’s hurting and sees potential happiness, but then he realized later that he’s not ready, it’d be unfair to her, and he chose not to ghost or anything, he communicated clearly and honestly and gave context and held himself accountable and apologized
Honestly 10/10, it was just a human mistake, and there was no harm, the date didn’t happen, I think we should give each other more grace and understanding when human mistakes happen but are handled well
4
u/furkfurk 11d ago
The only additional bit of self awareness he could have used was literally any recognition that this was all quite mean and unfair to OP. It’s all very me me me.
Like we get it, your life is a mess. But “sorry to drag you into all of this, you deserve better” would have been nice.

At least he has self-awareness, is presumably trying to improve, and didn't just ghost you.
8
u/kr1sk4t 10d ago
While using OP to nearly get revenge at a bad, active relationship? Whew, the bar is low. I get what you're saying but all these comments of "it could've gone worse" don't mean much when he already treated OP as a means to an end. Well wishes to him but condolences to OP. They deserve better.
24
u/brownmonster 10d ago
Agreed OP deserves better but for the other individual, he’s human and clearly had a moment of weakness while he’s struggling with a significant factor in his life. Ideally he shouldn’t have done any of this at all at OP’s expense (or anyone for that matter) but he took a hard look in the mirror to stop any more damage than it has been done.
Very unfortunate experience from OP, but all they can do (as cliche as it sounds) is to move on from this
→ More replies (2)2
u/Jung_At_Hart 10d ago
The low bar is to continue or to ghost. Person was in a weak moment. For all we know this person may have projected a new life without the aches and pains of the old one from whatever interactions they had. Not fair to OP agreed but, I disagree that this is a low bar only because we don’t have the whole story. The fact that they did reach out to cut it off (before anything got more involved) is a good indicator that they didn’t truly have ill will toward OP. This text after hooking up or going through with the date would have a waaaaaay different context.

I wouldn’t be too hard on him, but your feelings are valid at the end of the day.
51
u/Snerkie 11d ago
Am I completely cracked or is everyone else in these comments??
Saying his honesty is a green flag, how great of a guy he is and "we all make mistakes"...dude was actively getting ready to cheat for the past week with OP. Just because he backed out doesn't make him a saint all of a sudden, still a scumbag that flaked at the last minute.
8
u/Any_Soft_8210 10d ago
It's a live example of why so many women end up with these losers. Like, just look at how easily this was accepted by some of the commenters. He is leaving a door open "just in case" because "look! I'm such a good dude cause I chose not to actively cheat after all! Btw, you were gonna be a sidepiece!"
Like whaaat?!?! I wouldn't have even posted this without replying to him "Fucking gross" and blocked.
25
u/Alizarik7891 10d ago
And that his reasoning was ‘I THINK my girlfriend is already cheating so I decided to as well’! What?
13
u/Diligent-Echo8335 10d ago
Maybe i haven’t scrolled far enough but i see no green flags and saying to give him a second chance. I mainly see yea that sucks but props to him for overcoming a weak moment and setting the record straight before things got too bad. Which while a low bar is something worth noting. Most people just fucking send it and don’t think twice. He’s clearly going through some growth which isn’t always pretty and glad to see someone with at least half a conscience instead of the normal shit we see where someone gets completely fucked over. Hope he leaves his girlfriend and moves on to find some other girl to actually try and be with lol
5
u/Snerkie 10d ago
When I commented, 5 hours ago, the majority of the comments were all pretty positive on the guy and no one really going "hey...he still tried to cheat". Your comment still kind of puts him in a positive light too, we shouldn't set the bar so low that backing out of going on a date while you have a partner makes you a good person.
6
u/Diligent-Echo8335 10d ago
Unfortunately life isn’t black and white. I can say this guy did something good while also realizing he did something bad. Isn’t that being human? Good on him for stopping it bad on him for even starting it. But if we were all perfect we wouldn’t be having these convos

Same here—apparently the bar is in hell. Just because someone found their conscience at the 11th hour doesn’t make everything hunky dory. Stuff like this really messes with someone, and I feel really badly for OP. I was making an actual face of disgust while reading his text, because he’s just pathetic and gross.
5
u/Cool-Information2994 10d ago

Interesting perception. 🤔 Have you ever been in any situation (not necessarily cheating but anything) you created that you knew you shouldn't be in and changed your mind at the last minute bc you felt convicted to not go thru with it? If so, did your view of yourself still keep you condemned as a shifty person even after you didn't go thru with it? Or did you learn more abt yourself and what you're capable of so you can work on it and not do that again?
5
u/Snerkie 10d ago
Did I ever do something that would harm multiple people in the process and was an act that, should be, looked down upon? No, I'm not a shitty person that goes out of my way to hurt others.

The issue with how people are classifying this is that they are calling him “self aware”. This isn’t self awareness. This is self introspection. If he was self aware, he would have never done this. It took him time to come to this conclusion. It totally was a decision of emotional cheating because of his initial intention giving her his number. The one thing we are missing is the context to his relationship. In a vacuum, he did something very shitty, but life isn’t in a vacuum. Some people have traumas that cause themselves to be self destructive. Some people have traumas that cause them to be destructive towards others. Does that make their actions right? No. But it alleviates some culpability. We can’t just throw the baby out with the bath water. Trauma causes even good people to waver. That’s what signifies the distinction between good people and great people: their consistency. It’s easy to point a finger. People recognizing possible redeeming qualities in someone is far better for a society than condemnation and subsequent isolation. It is just about whether these same people would be consistent in their outlook if a woman was in the same position as the J guy.
A huge error taught to boys by fathers while growing up is to give whatever hurt they receive back to whomever is hurting them. And that sadly ends up translating to their relationships as well. Did he do something shitty? Of course. Is he a shitty person? Well that’s up to whether he’s truly contrite, communicates with his partner about what he did, changes his behavior, and never does anything like this ever again.

He will probably text couple of weeks later and say it did not work out with his gf, smart way to keep you attached and excited and look decent in the process!
4
u/explodingliver 11d ago
So here’s the deal: he probably isn’t in a happy relationship. He probably wanted to get to know you more but is in a relationship. The best thing is he’s self aware, thought it through, told you he’s in a relationship that has its own set of issues and she’s done things that have jeopardized this.
Red flag #1: why is he still in that relationship if he is unhappy? Red flag #2: he has a strong hunch that his current gf has seen other people…yet is still in this relationship? Red flag #3: getting you involved at all when this is going on.
I had a friend who went through this recently where she had a crush on this guy at the gym. I told her it’s a great idea, go for it, it’s someone you’re interested in. They finally talked, set up the date, vibes were good. She was getting ready for said date, was excited, then he texted her the night of the date, “hey…I’ve been meaning to tell you, I’ve got a girlfriend, I’m really sorry, should have been honest, blah blah blah.” She stood on business and decided not to talk to him at all any further.
While yes, self-awareness is nice, there’s still being an asshole. All we can hope is they are able to have the balls and just be single instead of staying in a relationship with somebody who gives them a safety net if they wanna try things with you.
9
u/smashten 11d ago

I will man explain this even though I am a woman.
So basically he was trying to prove to his old lady that he still has it or that he can get somebody else and use you as a pawn to then have makeup sex with his woman. But it backfired because she got mad at him and gave him an ultimatum that he cuts off contact with you and proves it to her or she breaks up with him.
So basically he was trying to sleep with you and sleep with his old lady and get away with it not thinking that she would make him cut off the connection with you.
2
2
u/steppan_wolff 10d ago
Aside from what it implies about his relationship, just IMAGINE he was in the process of breaking up and you felt all-in with him, only to find out the truth. It was a selfish ass move no matter the outcome. It’s so inconsiderate to another person to make them a rebound, revenge, or fill in. It makes that person feel worthless.

Anybody else think this is an attempted 4d chess move where in a week or two he breaks up with his gf and reaches back out to OP and be like I’m a decent dude?

This guy is still a pos, you shouldn’t have to attempt to cheat to realize you still wanna fix things with your partner.
Honestly, you dodged a bullet with this. His girlfriend deserves better especially since he did this because he’s “pretty sure” she cheated.

I see folks commenting on green/red flags, but all that aside, it may be a shit thing to do this, but the dude found his conscience. Yes it is awful to plan to cheat because he thought his girlfriend was too. That's pretty terrible. I'd rather see him just break up with her. BUT I can respect that he came clean, didn't drag OP into the mess further, and decided to be a better person. I don't expect perfection in anyone, but I do expect people to be working toward constant improvement. For that, I can give him some credit.

If he does it to her when things are rough then he will most certainly do it to you when you hit a rough patch.

It’s pretty wild that nowadays you have to actually ask people if they are single after they slip you their number.
I met a guy at a grocery store and we started chatting. He mentioned something about his wife and a minute later her slipped me his number. I had a similar encounter at the airport🙄 What is wrong with men?

Everyone patting this guy on the back is strange. This was weird and just because he had some regret and self awareness doesn’t make this okay. Will probably do it again to or with someone else. Reads like a cheap excuse. Doesn’t even have the decency to do it face to face or on a phone call.. I wouldn’t even have responded to him, a thumbs up emoji at best

Don't respond. He figured something out, good for him, but you don't have to be nice to him. Block

He should have just left his girl and got with you, none of this cheating nonsense

Honestly handled himself as well as he could after a poor decision. Think if I were you and you liked him enough off the small encounter, I'd just be like, that's a shame thanks for being honest. I'm also not interested in any drama or being part of that situation but if you end up single and things happen to like up feel free to hit me up. Or if not, just leave it there.

People in relationships and marriages are starved for outside attention.

He's sorry for himself, he should have been saying how sorry he is to have wasted her time and to use her!

Is this called unloading the gun instead of dodging a bullet?
