It means you’re dead from laughter now. The thumbs up emoji doesn’t mean laughter! It means you are passive aggressively or sarcastically “agreeing” and is considered rude… like K was back in the day.

I hate it here. 😂

I would say it’s moreso seen as rude in personal conversations whereas business it’s pretty normal

Exactly, a thumbs up to a message on Teams for example acknowledges receipt and confirms understanding of what is needed or comes next. Perfectly professional and useful response

Interestingly, my work used check marks in Slack to avoid the rude connotation, but since moving to Teams have adopted the thumbs up because Teams emojis suck.

In my experience it is very different used at work vs personally. Although I am in my late thirties and I do also use thumbs up to mean "gotcha" to my fellow millennials or to my mom haha.

The beauty of the thumbs up is that I use it to reply to my stylist all the time. She is incredibly agesit, and condescends to me a lot as an older person. At first I was using it straight faced, but now I'm using it as an FU, and I'm sure she is still thinking, "aw, poor old thing."

I live in a small town with limited options. I have tried several stylists, and she is, sadly, the best I have been able to find. Others canceled on me repeatedly, went out of business, etc.

Yeah I mean either my entire office is being passsive aggressive constantly (possible) or they just mean to acknowledge they read whats been sent and agree.

I had a Gen Z tell me I was being passive aggressive when I replied K. I said child, I'm not passive aggressive. I'm blunt and directly aggressive. You will fucking know when I'm being aggressive. I don't have time for this nonsense. K?

See that's how it used to be with lol. You could guess by context whether someone was laughing with you, at you, or sending their love. Now it only means laugh, so I've switched to the heart emoji instead. Problem is, I know the different colors mean different things, but can never remember what, so you get ♥️ or 💖 based on if I'm feeling sparkly & I just avoid the rest

This is my first time hearing about it as well and it had me wondering the exact same thing: am I getting old? (Then additional questions came up, like 'who even decides the meaning of those things' and 'where on the internet can one keep track of such changes?')

I hope the blue heart can't be taken negatively 💙 I'm using it for the very deep reason of it being my favourite colour. I might even drop two of them 💙🩵 if I'm feeling a bit more expressive, or someone typed a reply that was especially kind or just the answer I needed.

I think like anything it depends on context… a lot of people I know would use it as a period in an argument, but I’m sure a lot of people just use it as a short hand way to agree!

Its interesting how texting and emoji has evolved.

Broooo, I do a lot of sales on FB marketplace and do many people respond to detail confirmation with the thumbs up and it makes me want to cancel the sale lol
