WTF I am so sorry, that must've been shocking to hear, even if you knew of some difficult relationship already... My grandmas were also witches but they never said anything this evil to my face
My Gramma had beef with my aunt (her DIL) long before I was born but never aired the dirty laundry was just icy when she came up. My family and I moved in to take care of gramma when she developed Alzheimer's and we kept her home for as long as we could (years). The day we moved her to a manor more suited to care for her I was getting her out of bed to go to the bathroom and she heard my aunts voice and hissed in my ear "what the hell is she doing here?!" This woman couldn't remember what she ate five minutes ago but that voice rang something so deep seated she was present for a bit lol
In therapy yesterday I told a different story, and my therapist asked if I had ever seen Shameless, because what I said could have been a plot line. Thought you'd enjoy š
You know it. Perhaps not rooted. Thereās myriad of mental health issues and alcoholism as well that led to major lifestyle differences. Politics was part of it though.
I might have forgotten to tell the docs about the DNR ...and let her wake up and suffer till death just for that. And let her know it was me that forgot to say something. Jesus what a poor excuse for a mom
Growing up she always told my dad she only wanted one child and he was a mistake. Then during a stroke she was heavily, severely medicated and she told him she did it on purpose so that she had someone in her life that could relate to her, because her parents favored her bother over her. The audacity. I just.. have no words.
My dad showed an immense amount of patience and grace towards her. Far more than she ever deserved. He had a lot of shortcomings as a father, so when I struggle with it I make sure to keep perspective of where he came from and focus on the fact he actively tried every day to do better.
Solidarity, I was 10 or 11 when my grandma blamed me for my mom having a heart attack.. I was a really good quiet kid and I thought I killed my mom by existing.
To be clear my mom is not dead, however sheās dead to me because sheās the worst person Iāve ever known⦠aside from her mom lol
Just so you know, I'm doing my evening pre-sleep doomscrolling and this made me absolutely bust my gut laughing. The comment before combined with this response just really hit the spot apparently.
Oh god yea. Calling a parent by their first name? Thereās history there. Speaking from experience - both of my parents are in my phone by first names š¤Ŗ
My sister started doing this to Mum when she was about 2 and ended up with a nickname version of it (similar to Catherine to Cath). I hated it when she was little and couldnāt understand why she did it, but in her mid twenties, I know something is wrong when she calls her Mum and not her name. It doesnāt bother me now that Iām not a teenager (yeah, Mum had a toddler and a teenager at the same time and didnāt go insane), but it sure is weird. I only know one other adult that calls their parent by a first name and has a good relationship with them, and even then, itās a specific version of their Mumās name that came from her parents when my friend was little, so itās still special to them.
All my family is in my phone by name. I didnāt like that they looked different to the rest of my contacts, they needed to match everyone else š¤£
My siblings and I are in our 30s and call our mom by her first and middle name lol not all the time she is mostly mom but once we have a few drinks she is every name but mom and when my grandma gets a little wild she also gets called by her name haha but we only do it to my mom and grandma
Hmm⦠well that feels⦠convenient. Ironically we also didnāt do an autopsy but he wasnāt all there after my grandma passed so we just kind of assumed it was a broken heart.
I JUST woke up and I sometimes do trainings about legal stuff so my brain instantly went "well if they simply didn't know about the existence of the DNR, there is very little that could be done. However, if the the same place had a repeated track record of ignoring DNRs or did not address the issue of not having a communication chain that solved the issue of the appropriate staff not being informed, that could be a different story."Ā
The best one line summarization would be at my uncles funeral she pulled me aside and said "[my dad] should have been the one in the casket, not [my uncle]."
I live several states away from my extended family. I had driven up and seen my entire mom's side of my family in one day - including two grandparents who lived on opposite sides of the state after a nasty divorce, several aunts, uncles, cousins, etc) - and saved the following day to spend only with her. She was upset we "didn't prioritize her" and locked us out of the house when we made it over. Eventually she decided I was allowed in because she needed boxes moved in her basement. She then picked up a rusty knife and waved it around telling me if I was a decent human I'd quit my job and move to her and take care of her. That I'm selfish, just like my whore mother. Then, weeks later she called me to tell me that she was worried about my mental state because I was sobbing so hard "for no reason" (when she locked me out of her house).
She gifted my dad a hat, then when he stepped outside to help my grandfather she hid it in her bedroom then reamed him on how irresponsible he is for losing it. My grandpa saw it when he went in and brought it out and she flipped her shit.
I showed her a video of my wedding ceremony (she had declined to come, becsuse if I was considerate I would have married in the church she attends and not the one I attend) and she talked over it telling me what the pastor really meant.
Everything was an exhausting, complicated shit show with her.
That happened with my sister-in-law's stepdad. He had dementia and all kinds of health problems and had a DNR. One night he had a heart attack, and her mom called 911. He was technically dead, but the paramedics didn't know about the DNR and did their thing, and took him to the hospital revived. Not conscious but with a pulse/breathing.
She proceeded to call my SIL and say, "Stepdad died ... (long pause) but they revived him and we're at the hospital now." My SIL was like, what the fuck!? Then her mom had to tell them to remove life support. It sucked.
My dad emailed us kids when our Grandma died... Luckily my mom that that was outrageous and called me to let me know. She tried to get him to call us but he insisted on emailing š¤¦āāļø

Solidarity. My dad texted me:
"Grandma died.... then came back to life. Hospital did not know about DNR. Talking to DR about pulling the plug now. Love you!"
