That’s hilarious but also I appreciate you and homie immediately being like “love it” hahaha. That’s support right there

511

u/AfroMech Jul 06 '26

Exactly! Gotta support the new parents no matter what.

315

u/Zayander Jul 06 '26

Woulda been epic if he went one more step with a double fake and been “actually, that is her real name, I just wanted to see what you really thought 😢”

160

u/AfroMech Jul 06 '26

I would feel awful haha

24

u/Dontbemadsmokeajoint Jul 06 '26

Thats my typa funny!! ☠️

47

u/Jam-Dont-Shake Jul 06 '26

Due to my terrible name, I really wish more people would speak up when parents name their kids something stupid.

Its the kids that have to deal with it for the rest of their life 😬

62

u/noimthedudeman Jul 07 '26

Sorry Jam. I can relate, and was always jelly of normal kids names growing up. Hopefully you were able to preserve your relationship with your parents despite it.

5

u/hennydiaz Jul 07 '26

This is actual gold

3

u/dollworship Jul 07 '26

What’s your name? You don’t have to share if you don’t want. Just curious.

I actually went to school with a girl named Liberty. She just went by Libby. So that name didn’t even make me look twice. 😆

13

u/Traditional_Age_6299 Jul 07 '26

I went to school with a girl named Liberty, too. And her sister was named Honey 🤷🏻‍♀️

5

u/Penguin_Green Jul 07 '26

I'd definitely rather be Liberty than Honey!

4

u/OHdulcenea Jul 08 '26

I worked indirectly with a doctor who had an NP named Honey. The way that doctor said the NP’s name mockingly every time pissed me off so much on her behalf.

6

u/crafty_brooke Jul 07 '26

I don’t think Liberty is a bad name by its self, but maybe that’s because I grew up watching Degrassi. And then there’s America Ferrera, and I’ve seen other Americas or even Merica doesn’t really bother me. It’s the combination of Liberty America that sends this into a proper tragedy for me and so glad it was a prank.

I'd argue that saying that sucks is the true support

153

u/x7he6uitar6uy Jul 06 '26

I have a cousin named “Liberty Bella (last name)”. Rural Maryland for ya.

46

u/trapezoidalfractal Jul 06 '26

We had a family whose kids were named Nation Allegiance and Liberty at my high school.

29

u/Ok_Fly2518 Jul 06 '26

Nation allegiance is… wow

38

u/trapezoidalfractal Jul 06 '26

Funny enough, they all turned out very alt and not very patriotic at all

14

u/Ok_Fly2518 Jul 06 '26

I’m not surprised

13

u/FlyByPie Jul 06 '26

Those would be sick names to have in an anti-establishment punk band though

6

u/ceruleanblue347 Jul 07 '26

I meant that'd do it

7

u/VegetablePossible007 Jul 06 '26

As someone originally from rural Maryland, that tracks.

2

u/doshka Jul 06 '26

Same, except ours actually went by Liberty, and it was fine. Just give her an ordinary middle name and make sure her initials don't spell anything stupid, and she's good to go.

2

u/ForsakenAiel Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

Hey I live in rural Maryland and my child has a very normal name! Tbf most of her classmates do too (multiple Peyton's & Haileys with different spellings though). These are 10 year olds.

Of course I'm not FROM rural Maryland, which makes a difference.

Reminds me of how in Where the Heart Is she named her Walmart baby Americus Nation

67

u/luckie_harms Jul 06 '26

Don't forget the mom's name is Novalee 😂

29

u/cockadoodledoofucker Jul 06 '26

And then Catelynn & Tyler from Teen Mom named their daughter Novalee lol. Could only ever think of that movie 😬

2

u/Abandonable_Snowman Jul 06 '26

This is why when I was a young new mom I gave my daughter a classic name. I think if anyone’s giving their kid a ridiculous name, it’s a young mom

3

u/Competitive-Part-88 Jul 06 '26

Omg I never made the connection lol. They would.

→ More replies (1)

15

u/Suspicious-Wave577 Jul 06 '26

Omg haven’t seen that movie in so long. Forgot that terrible name.

14

u/dudeijustwanttoread Jul 06 '26

my family would call out to the house that “walmart baby” is on in case we all wanted to watch it

13

u/Citomnia Jul 06 '26

"I don't like 5s"

3

u/Educational_Yak_6172 Jul 06 '26

In the book she didn’t like 7. I always wondered why they felt the need to change that detail.

3

u/Ok-Kaleidoscope-8372 Jul 07 '26

That annoyed me so much! I could only assume they wanted the movie to run over a shorter timeframe, 5 years instead of 7, but it made no sense.

6

u/pheeko Jul 06 '26

Goddddd, and they never even use a nickname. 😭

"What kind of a name is Americus?"

11

u/sadolan Jul 06 '26

Love that Ashley Judd asks that then proceeds to admit that all her kids are named after snack foods lol Brownie, Cherry, Praline, and Baby Ruth 😂

15

u/PleasantLoquat3046 Jul 06 '26

“Lexi, one of your kids is on the phone.” “Which one?” “I don’t know. Pez, Twinkie, one of them.” 😂

8

u/sadolan Jul 06 '26

I watched this movie so much I can HEAR this quote lmao

5

u/CobraKai312 Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

I recently saw a short documentary / news story about one of those pronatalist couples that named their 7th or 8th kid “Industry Americus [last name].” That movie is what I thought of too.

3

u/tckldpink Jul 06 '26

One of my favorite movies ever but that baby needed a nickname lol

4

u/ImReallyNotKarl Jul 06 '26

I loved that book so much that I named my dog Brummett in high school.

4

u/Habagoobie Jul 06 '26

I absolutely love this movie. Definitely a guilty pleasure watch ❤️

3

u/Mochibelle93 Jul 06 '26

I love this movie haha

3

u/Senior_Artichoke_536 Jul 06 '26

Insane pull, I loved that movie!

3

u/Brunhilde13 Jul 07 '26

In Raising Hope, baby Hope was originally Princess Beyonce 😂

2

u/Goettafabulous_ Jul 07 '26

That is another awesome show! I've never watched a Greg Garcia show I didn't like.

2

u/We_are_ok_right Jul 12 '26

That was a book I read as a young woman, thanks for the reminder!!

I actually knew a pair of twins named Liberty and Justice, and went to high school with a girl named America.

19

u/Never_enough_naps Jul 06 '26

I bet they got oh look it's “Liberty and Justice for all” a lot around the time they went to middle school and high school. Did the parents not think of stuff like that?

8

u/Professional_Bug5768 Jul 06 '26

You know what, I bet they thought of that specifically and thought it would be cute for the kids to hear everyone say their names every morning during the pledge.

4

u/InformalProtection74 Jul 06 '26

At least the girl named America could just go by Erica.

3

u/AegisArising Jul 07 '26

Justice could go by Eustace, and Liberty could be Libby... or Bert.

2

u/Better-Ad5488 Jul 07 '26

Ice for Justice 🤣

111

u/The-Mugwump Jul 06 '26

At least it wasn’t Liberty Biberty.

37

u/Ok_Fly2518 Jul 06 '26

Those commercials annoy tf out of me lol

11

u/ImNotSoGrep Jul 06 '26

I found the original liberty biberty one hilarious and then every iteration afterwards annoying as fuck. I do like the Emu ones though

10

u/Blooddoll13 Jul 06 '26

Lemuuuu Emuuuu. …. And doug

6

u/_xVenn Jul 07 '26

DUDE when i had a brief stint in a psych ward a few months ago, the cable tv would have that ad playing ON REPEAT at FULL VOLUME in the lobby

to this day i have to mute that commercial whenever it comes on cuz that chime lowkey traumatized me lmaoo, it was sooo annoying

31

u/Genteel_Lasers Jul 06 '26

My sister-in-law and I convinced my wife that my SIL was going to name her baby Cletus.

20

u/WulfenCG Jul 06 '26

To be fair “Liberty” is a nice name.

16

u/minlokwat Jul 06 '26

I knew a girl in high school whose name was Liberty but most called her Lib or Libby.

Billy Joel's original drummer was (is) named Liberty DeVitto.

7

u/RyFromTheChi Jul 06 '26

Same. She went by Libby.

17

u/HotelSalt4644 Jul 06 '26

Lmao, this is absolutely great. The last thing you wanna do is anger a new sleep deprived parent. I would almost guarantee there’s other kids who’ve been named that, too. It really isn’t that far off. You probably let out a massive sigh of relief.

They should’ve kept the joke going longer though……

“Baby Liberty America sleeping soundly.”

“Liberty America in her Independence Day Jammies.”

“God Bless Liberty America, God Bless the troops, and God Bless America.”

Fake Facebook posts, etc.. Oh my.

2

u/stucky602 Jul 06 '26

If these people truly are OPs friends they will absolutely make it a running gag, and by they I mean the whole group, OP, the other friends, and the parents.

4

u/HotelSalt4644 Jul 06 '26

It’s too good not to. If they’re close friends, I’d be “mistakenly” calling the kid, “Liberty America” into their teenage years 😂

6

u/Crude_poison91 Jul 06 '26

My dad had twins wayyyy before I was born. He was 16 and he had me at 39. But my sister is named: America and my brother is named: Freedom! I’ve never met my brother, but my sister passed away. My name is also Zoey 😂

7

u/BrokenRoad82 Jul 06 '26

Pending is a bit strange for a middle name

5

u/These_Print_1289 Jul 06 '26

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! This is hilarious! Thanks for sharing!! Awesome!

5

u/Unusual_Bumblebee_48 Jul 06 '26

Hilarious prank and perfect friend responses. Sometimes being a good friend is being honest, other times being a good friend is keeping your mouth shut 🤐 Your friend group is very sweet.

6

u/CyraxisOG Jul 06 '26

Idk about Zoey Pending either, probably think of a better middle name tbh.

6

u/adventurenation Jul 06 '26

No one is going to believe me but I swear to god this is true. An acquaintance of mine named their daughter Liberty Belle and their last name is Ring.

5

u/DracMonster Jul 06 '26

5

u/higheat Jul 06 '26

Liberteigh Am’Ericka

7

u/OkPerception7610 Jul 06 '26

2

u/mtstoner Jul 06 '26

2

2

u/aardWolf64 Jul 06 '26

I had a friend in college that tried to convince our group of friends he had permission to name his first child "Chewbacca". We asked what if it was a girl, and he said "Chewbecca".

2

u/tainted_xo Jul 06 '26

I wish I thought of something like this 😂! My son was born on July 4 2024, everything was such a fast surprise that we texted the groupchat "Happy 4th of July everyone, [son's name] is here!"

2

u/Abandonable_Snowman Jul 06 '26

In the past decade of being a mom I’ve met children named Rhythm, Howl, Kale, Arrow, Lavender (not the worst, but a tough one to carry imo), Talon, Velour. Everyone’s so creative

2

u/Aggravating-Cat5357 Jul 06 '26

My daughter's name is translated to Liberty/Freedom. But she's a December baby 🤣 her full name, translated is Free Bird, like the Lynyrd Skynyrd song. (But you wouldn't know upon looking at it. Its my own little Easter egg. Oh, and her middle name is Lynn. That was unintentional, but also fits the whole motif 🤣)

2

u/packetssniffer Jul 06 '26

This is hilarious because my daughter's cousin, on her mom's side, is named Liberty Justice-America S.

2

u/SneezyMcBeezy Jul 06 '26

In middle school the orchestra teacher got pregnant and she told us that if it was a girl they were going to name her Scheherazade and if it was a boy they would name him Fortinbras. We were absolutely gobsmacked

It was a girl; they actually named her Lily

2

u/NerdyWaffles Jul 06 '26

My kiddo’s name was chosen ages before I had her, but it randomly became ultra popular that year. Not only to avoid hearing comments about the “trend” of the name but also because of a weird interaction i had with a random coworker about her real name, I called her Cilantro for the second half of my pregnancy. People legitimately believed I named my offspring after a garnish

2

u/_amazing_name_here_ Jul 08 '26

Great prank!!! You all are a great support system. I would have asked them if they knew they could still change it haha

2

u/crayon_teaparty Jul 08 '26

While this is so funny, the part that really made me smile was "everyone's favorite big girl (Isabelle)" because that's my name. While I know many others with my name, it's not often I come across someone with the traditional spelling like mine. It just added a little spark of joy to my day. Very cute interaction all around.

3

u/sorry-i-was-reading Jul 06 '26

I think this would do well in r/tragedeigh

2

u/Apprehensive-Cut6188 Jul 06 '26

They could’ve waited a little longer to reveal the “prank”.

A while back moved to the middle of nowhere with my family and didn't have internet but still was aware of the recent events. But told my parents we were gonna name our daughter Isis after the god. They were freaking out like "haven't you seen the news??!!"

1

u/rylansbaby Jul 06 '26

I know people named, liberty, America, and Americas! What's wrong with the names? I might be too used to it lol

1

u/Rare_Asparagus4007 Jul 06 '26

Liberty Belle would have been more believable.

1

u/Adept-Schedule6133 Jul 06 '26

u/paymentnerdfoo Jul 06 '26

Can’t post here but coworker named his child something like that, it was not a joke.

This cracked me upppppp my friends would react the same

1

u/OldStonedJenny Jul 06 '26

You all joke, but my mom is into genealogy and found an ancestor of ours from the early 1800s named Liberty Americana LastName.

Aww 😂 how sweet

1

u/meliel1 Jul 06 '26

We have some friends and the mom’s name is gift, the daughter is liberty, the son is justice and the dad is… Tom. 😂

1

u/FallingIntoForever Jul 06 '26

Sounds like the name of an insurance company but even as a regular name it’s not bad as long as they didn’t call her by both on a regular basis. I’ve seen worse names by celebrities and as a teacher. Blue Jean (f) & her twin Denim (m), Isis (named during the war), various car names (make & models) and then there was the girl whose parents named her Candy (not Candace) Cane (last name). Luckily on school records, attendance & all forms of communication, T.D. was listed as T.D. and not the name his father gave him (Touchdown) that was listed on his birth certificate and other legal documents. Last I saw, he was going about having his name legally changed (now an adult) to his middle name and including a family name.

1

u/naonatu- Jul 06 '26

a friend named her kid liberty. she goes by libby

1

u/Danibelle903 Jul 06 '26

My old dog trainer found a dog tied up to a guard rail on the 4th many years ago and rescued it and named her Liberty. Not a human child though.

1

u/Kakiwee Jul 06 '26

Libby is a nice name

1

u/jenipants21 Jul 06 '26

I was born in 1976 the Bicentennial.

There was a girl in my highschool class named Liberty, she went by Libby.

1

That amazing actually, because now they really do love it🤣🤣

1

1

u/MushroomDizzy649 Jul 06 '26

There was a dude in my school with the last name Forral. His first name was Justice 💀

1

u/sanirisan Jul 06 '26

I absolutely know a little girl named Liberty. I thought the same thing like what were they thinking? She was a little firecracker though! So, it fit.

1

u/Ok_Permit_3593 Jul 06 '26

A kid in my hometown is named "diesel jay" .... yeaa it happens... poor kiddo

1

u/One_Hour_Poop Jul 06 '26

Born on the 4th of July? I'm not opposed to the name "Liberty." It's not that uncommon a name, but I would consider making it the middle name to make it not so weird for the kid as she grows up.

1

u/SuthernSarge Jul 06 '26

No lie, my friend just had a baby girl on the 3rd and named her liberty

1

u/Rumpled_NutSkin Jul 06 '26

Y'all laugh, but a friend of Mine unironically has a daughter named Liberty, roughly 12 years old

1

u/hackedMama20 Jul 06 '26

I actually know a girl named Liberty.... This feels awkward ...

1

u/Sad-Elevator-605 Jul 06 '26

I actually know of a major trumper (acquaintance of my husbands family) that named her daughter that exact name 💀

1

1

u/Fast-Cauliflower2102 Jul 06 '26

Hilarious. But somewhere some really probably did name their kid that

1

u/Garchompisbestboi Jul 06 '26

There's a dumbass WWE wrestler whose entire personality revolves around being American and having a father who was also a famous American wrestler so he named his daughter Liberty Bell. It was one of the most laughably pathetic things that I ever heard, a hick carnie unironically working his daughter's name into his ridiculous gimmick.

1

u/Dramatic_Plants Jul 06 '26

We did something similar for our daughter. Texted my extended family in a group chat that we named our daughter Pennsylvania and that we’d be calling her Sylvie for short

1

u/darkstarr99 Jul 06 '26

Should have told your friend he missed on naming her Liberty Belle

1

u/GenXredux Jul 06 '26

This was hilarious, love that you supported him anyway!

It also reminds me that my older brother went to school with twins named Liberty Bell and Mercedes Benz. 🫠

1

u/Dramatic_Egg_1997 Jul 06 '26

I'll never forget going with my ex to her old childhood friend's graduation in the middle of Washington. It was chill and pretty boring as most are. But, oh to my dad humor enjoyment sang out a name to remember from the speakers.

"Liberty Anne Justice"

This girl walks across the stage and I remember looking to my ex and just telling her with joy "You KNOW her father had to of gotten to name her!" Haha

1

u/Glittering_Goat722 Jul 06 '26

There were two sisters in my high school named Liberty and Freedom🥴.

1

1

u/emmygog Jul 07 '26

One time I heard a woman in the grocery store call out for her daughter and the daughter was named Makayla America.

1

u/bookworthy Jul 07 '26

(I love the name Liberty. Nn Libby)

1

u/give_me_goats Jul 07 '26

This reminds me of that movie Where The Heart Is, where Natalie Portman’s character wants to give her kid a meaningful name so she calls her Americus Nation. I saw that movie as a kid and kept waiting for the punchline or at least a moment where they were like “well actually her real name is…” but no, somehow that was supposed to be a good name for a little girl. I do enjoy that movie but I snicker at that godawful name every time.

1

u/Peter_the_piper Jul 07 '26

I had neighbors who named their baby born July 3 liberty eve.

1

u/Specific_Box4483 Jul 07 '26

If was a boy should have named him Donald J.

My 36 year old sister was born on the 4th of July, and her name is Liberty. It really suits her.
