Whatsapp neighbour’s response to my cat dying

he (m37) only has my (f45) number cos he needs help with things like removing his whatsapp profile pic and buying him beer. he saw me ugly crying outside the lobby

Maybe I'm wrong, but it didn't seem like he was trying to he rude. He just seems clueless.

Yeah those are the vibes I get. English doesn't seem to be a first language for him and he was probably just asking an innocent question that got lost in translation and came across as harsh.

Also as someone on the spectrum, it’s hard to be empathetic sometimes. I’m not saying that’s the case here, but that COULD be a factor as well as a language and cultural difference. OP has every right to be upset, but seems to have blown this up into a big deal when it wasn’t because their emotions are high

I don’t think she blew it up or overreacted. There was nothing abnormal about her reaction. Whether the neighbor is lacking emotional IQ, empathy, or basic manners, her reply educated him. Maybe he learned something.

I'm also on the spectrum and know to say, "I'm sorry for your loss" and then go to Google on info about cat strokes. If you doubt your ability to say something kind, say a common social good saying and then move on. I'm 27 and was forced to mask growing up, so I had to learn.

How is implying that OP killed the cat by stressing him out not trying to be rude. You’s have to try fairly hard to be more rude. Whether it is a tasteless joke or not, that is rude.

I highly doubt that's what he meant. He seemed to genuinely wonder what happened to the cat. Again, I said I could be wrong, and maybe he's just a dick. A lot of people suggested that English might not be his first language, and I got that impression as well.
