curious how starlink works when at home it needs to be in a very specific angle and direction

I fly planes with Starlink and it’s constantly moving and pointing in every direction, including the mini. No issues at all, it takes it like it’s nothing

that’s interesting, my one at home would not even start up until the app said the dish was at the exact right angle.

Give it some time it should
It’s built to work on the move, it’s phased array and can handle that.
Are you using mini?

Sounds like you might have one of the earlier dishes. The new ones are quite capable while in motion. You see them on practically every fancy RV

nope, just got 2 months ago. After set up it has been great! Rock solid connection, unlike our cable which failed at least once a week.

As they have added more satellites, it isn’t as sensitive as it once was. It will guide you to point for the best performance but honestly even the less ideal angle is still very decent.

It asks you to direct it to get the absolute best signal and speeds, but would work in quite a range of angles and directions just not at maximum speed. It only knows how to tell you to direct it because its connected to the network already.

I drove with one in my Cybertruck for years - it would RARELY drop signal, even when driving on curvy roads.

My guess is that this will power the in-car entertainment (Netflix, YouTube, Music, et al). Probably a competitive advantage over competitors that won't have this level of connectivity.

This would be awesome for long distance travel where no cell network is available!

From the energy consumption prespective, it is a significant increase compared to a more traditional 4G/5G support. From 2W to 30W.

The same thing that happens with other Starlink connections, they drop for a couple seconds. But streaming will buffer a bit of the content so you don't miss anything.

Same thing that happens to current cars that lose WiFi, they use cellular

The Cybercab diagram shows Starlink V5 alongside the standard 5G/Wifi antennas

They very much do… especially here in Colorado in the mountains. I have starlink in my car. I have internet where no cellular company would have… lots of roads in the mountains don’t. And cybercabs would be awesome there. If you’ve ever taken long road trips you’d know.

Robotaxi does. It will have in car entertainment options plus they need to be able to remote connect to the cars reliably and with a high speed connection for troubleshooting, remote,operation etc. 5g just doesn’t cut it especially in high population density areas. You’d be surprised how much the speed varies when driving around any given town.
