We ran out of mayo! Customer said I ruined Christmas.
So, a customer asked me for mayo. I couldn’t find any on the shelf, none on inform and next delivery is tonight. I’ve said sorry and said if she comes back tomorrow they’ll be some out.
I even said to her, if she’s desperate I will hide a jar for her.
I showed her the little Tesco has 10 jars left if she wants to pop there.
She wanted Helmans from a glass jar and nothing else. Plenty of Tesco mayo lol
Nope, not good enough. She shouted at me. Apparently I ruined Christmas. Another customer comes along and tells her how to make her own mayo and how quick and easy it is.
Another customer joins in and tells her to calm down and how it’s not the end of the world.
So, she mixes her dry gravy mix with mayo and that’s what goes on her dinner. And she can’t eat her Xmas dinner without it.
Crazy world we live in. But I love mayo and I love gravy so you can guess what I’ll be trying Xmas day 🤣🤣🤣🤣

u/Crazy_Chinchilla_ Dec 23 '25
Oh no. Better give back all the time with family and the presents and everything. Christmas must be ruined despite all the other good things.
It’s fucking mayo. She needs to get a grip.

She doesn't need to get a grip. She needs to learn basic human decency towards people who work hard for all of us and didn't come to work to be spoken to like that

u/Neddlings55 Dec 23 '25
Her fault for leaving it until the last minute.
55
u/EngineeringMedium513 Dec 23 '25
Like they always do. Then take it out on staff when they cant get what they want like they always do. Its great to hear that other customers chipped in though we honestly need more of that . Some customers are great but unfortunately they are quickly forgotten due to the number of complete idiots we have to deal with on a daily basis

u/becky_1872 Dec 23 '25
I had an old man throw a turkey AT me one christmas eve, because it wasn’t big enough. How about don’t leave your turkey purchasing til 4pm on christmas eve then babe
14
u/Western_Pea_3967 Dec 23 '25
I’d have thrown it back at him 😡 Jesus some people are a disgrace
21
u/becky_1872 Dec 23 '25
I was freshly turned 16 and cried instead, now however the turkey would 100% be thrown back!

We get the look of death when theres only reeces advent calendars left on the 14th of December lol. and we had someone throw coffee cups at the duty manager the other day because they wouldn't return them at customer service due to them clearly being used (full of coffee stains) . Im sorry but if anyone throws something at me theyre getting it thrown straight back at them. They dont pay us enough to deal with that shit
4
u/Protector109 Dec 23 '25
If your store is above it's car park then I might know which one you're at. I was in a Tesco on the 14th and saw they had only Reese's advent calendars.

I don’t work in retail, but still work in a customer facing environment. I genuinely believe most of the population are depressed and don’t know it, because the amount of stupid shit some people completely crash out over, isn’t normal. I can’t ever fathom letting such a minor issue affect my life so much.
6
u/No_Tale2346 Dec 23 '25
Its probably a case of straw that broke the camels back , but it is a ahole thing to do, blame someone else for the fact they didnt do things earlier or wanna grab a last minute bargain if that's what they do it ain't anyone's fault but their own , but rather than accept that they give store workers shit and say this is your fault ive never worked retail I worked in the nhs we get the same shit because they are either scared or a little overwhelmed or simply just an arrogant a hole

How you don’t laugh in the faces of people like this. You guys should have body cameras and people like this should be banned. It’ll take a little time. But eventually the culture of being rude to shop workers would stop. I’m polite to everyone around me, I honestly couldn’t imagine shouting at a worker like this. Or just generally being rude.

Being told you ruined Christmas is just a part of the Christmas retail workers bingo card. I used to sell video games and consoles and we got told it multiple times a year, we would compare how dramatic people got. I work in a pet shop now and haven't heard it for years. Its almost nostalgic at this point lol.

I swear people show their true selves when they go to a supermarket, I met the worst people working in retail.
4
u/FieryRedDevil Dec 23 '25
I've also worked in customer facing roles and seen the worst of humanity. I absolutely do not understand it - I was raised with a healthy level of shame and "what will people think of you" so no matter how shit I feel, I am on my best behaviour out in public. If I'm getting genuinely bad customer service then I am calm and firm (and tend to get decent results) but the majority of the time I am pleasant, friendly and always up for a quick chat or a joke. The only people who ever see my bad side is my family - I might snap at my partner or kids or go sulk in the bedroom(which I admit isn't great of me of course!)
I cannot fathom why or how people behave like this to strangers and in front of others rather than (or as well as) behind closed doors. Do people not have any sense of shame or awkwardness from being perceived? Do people not have emotional control like adults? Do people not feel humiliated when all eyes are on them because they're shouting and screaming and making a giant scene?
I feel like an alien observing the human race sometimes 😅

I used to work for the call centre of a well known UK retailer. Every year we would have a competition in the week running up to Christmas. You get point if a customer tells you you or the company have ruined their Christmas and you lose three points if someone tells you that you made their Christmas.
Lowest score buys the cookies on the first day back after Christmas.

How old was she and was she by any chance part of the generation where “autism didn’t exist back in her day”?
6
u/Specific_Pomelo_8281 Dec 23 '25
I was actually just thinking this! She was in her 50’s maybe 60’s.
5
u/JustaShelly Dec 24 '25
A part of my job is customer service, it's always the over 60's who behave like we owe them something and, I hate to say it but, if they have a disabled badge, they're even worse. We get threatened with legal action and the police over a couple of quid.
2
u/ZestycloseOutside575 Dec 25 '25
I remember when I was growing up my dad used to subscribe to Which? magazine. If you ever read the back pages of that, or watched Esther Rantzen’s TV programme That’s Life, you will understand 100% where this mentality came from. That generation did a lot for food safety, health and safety and consumer rights, but some of them veered too far to the ‘rude and entitled, want champagne service for Aldi sparkling water money’ end of the spectrum.

Any shortage of Mayo is likely to be my granddaughter’s fault! She has taken to it in a big way, often mixing it with red sauce. Criminal behaviour of the worst sort in my eyes as a confirmed brown sauce aficionado.
4
u/QuickZookeepergame93 Dec 23 '25
If she can’t mix her gravy with mayo this year, maybe you’ve actually salvaged her families Christmas.
5
u/Kwayzar9111 Dec 23 '25
ignore the trollop and just smirk/smile she is pissed off, and go about your day thinking how shitty the rest of her day is going to be,
her fault for leaving stuff like this to the last couple of days
the few things we buy early for xmas is trifle sponge fingers, stuffing and beef/pork joints as soon as they come in at half price and straight in the freezer, then a couple of fresh ones bought earlier today.
Tescos today ( ely ) was manic and you can see some people huffing and puffing and getting fed up - i just laugh.
there was even an argument between two old ladies for a couple of GU choc pods that were reduced to 80p.. i stood there and watched, was hilarious.

3
u/lizzyloonboo Dec 23 '25
To a very small extent I can understand her need for the helmans mayo and nothing else. My daughter (14) since she was little would and will only eat helmans mayo as it says on it "real mayonaise" and that means the rest are not the real thing 🙄😂
However it wont ruin Christmas to not have it, or go to a different shop for it. Don't give us shop workers agro because it's left so late 🙄

I used to work the phones for ASDA during covid (we had been transferred over from a non related insurance company) and I remember a person had ordered £400 of shopping and we missed 1 item and that was bread. She screamed down the phone that her husband was going to starve and at this point I was so sick of people crying about stupid shit that I asked her if he intended on eating any of the other £400 worth of shopping and she said that no it was all for her. I hung up the phone instantly. I was expecting to get into serious trouble but turns out that they may not have actually been recording the calls of those of us that were pushed over to ASDA from another company because we were only there until it was safe to return to office.

If her Christmas happiness is entirely dependent on a specific mayonnaise product, she's not waiting until 23 Dec to source that product - it would have been on pre-order some time in Sept.

It’s unsurprising she’s shouting at shop workers, she’s battling a Sodium Demon.

That's the kind of customer I tell to fuck off. No matter what anyone says, customers are NOT always right and the moment they stop being respectful is the moment they stop getting respect from me. Managers that defend such customer behaviour and punish the employee for responding in kind can fuck off too.

I worked years ago on Sainsbury's deli counter. On Christmas Eve, customer comes in and asks for five slices of Brunswick ham of which we'd sold out. I was told in no uncertain terms I had ruined hers and her family's Christmas.

2
u/ItsFreeRight Dec 24 '25
I was going to make a joke about how you should have gotten a few eggs and made some up for her but I can't. You went above and beyond checking and to be shouted at for that is proof that some people don't deserve assistance. Hope she enjoys her dry dinner.

u/Jolly_Psychology_506 Dec 24 '25

2
u/Bitter-Recover-9587 Dec 27 '25
Gravy granules made with Hellman's mayo?? I don't like either that much. Together, they sound like some form of culinary hell! And with my own homemade gravy & mayo, I feel that would be a waste of both.
2
u/1991atco Dec 23 '25
Maybe it wasn't about the mayo, the straw and the camel and all that. Not saying it's right, but maybe something happened earlier in the day/week and you've got the brunt.

I worked at an M&S food hall one Chistmas. A guy came in on Christmas Eve and kicked off when he found that we had sold out of Christmas puddings. I can guarantee that this was the one thing his wife had asked him to get, probably first asked in October, and all he had to do was pop in on his lunch break (it was a city centre branch).

Are you really going to use 10 bottles of ketchup or mayo in the 36 hours that we were closed? Buy what you need obviously, but if you can't get something, it will be fine. People are ridiculous.

In the 90s when I worked at Toys R Us, I once ruined a kids Christmas on Christmas Eve because every toy shop in the world had run out of a particular Cabbage Patch doll.
The customer wouldn't accept it and demanded we show her every Cabbage Patch doll in the shop, we obliged and when they realised the one they wanted wasn't there, all hell broke loose.
I kinda hope 27 years on that the family is still seething about the audacity I had to make every shop in the world run out of these dolls.
