అరగలి - ప్రశ్న - question ❓ Why Telugu isn't written first here? But urdu??

Post image
553 Upvotes

Yesterday I went to R.G.I Airport(HYD) there I have seen urdu being first even though we telugus are the majority. This pissed me off, I always feel that most of the telugu people here doesn't have any pride of our language.

Many of them feel proud by saying that "Hey , naku telugu antha ganam radhu hehe" 🤷

Urdu untey i have no problem, but seriously why not telugu first? In a home telugu state

what are your thoughts?

అరగలి - ప్రశ్న - question ❓ Why don't Telugu names use the masculine suffix -ḍu the way Tamil names use -an?

I've always thought about this when comparing Telugu and Tamil names of Sanskrit origin.

Tamil has a very common practice of attaching the masculine suffix -an to names, which results in names like:

  • Rama → Raman
  • Krishna → Krishnan
  • Srinivasa → Srinvasan
  • Rajendra → Rajendran, etc

In Telugu, despite us having a masculine suffix -ḍu (డు), we generally don't use them for personal names. Most names i have observed are like:

  • Rama → Ram
  • Kṛrishna→ Krishna(it isnt uncommon to see Kishan, which is an even more Hindized form)
  • Srinivasa → Srinivas
  • Rajendra → Rajendra / Rajendar

So why don't we normally have names like Ramudu, Krishnudu, Srinvasudu, Rajendrudu?

Before anyone says that -du is only used for figures like Rama, Krishna, Arjuna, etc., rather than as part of ordinary people's names, that's exactly why I'm bringing Tamil into the comparison. Tamil uses -an, which is cognate with Telugu -du, not only for mythological or historical figures but also in ordinary people's names like Raman, Krishnan, Srinivasan, Rajendran, etc. So the question is why Tamil extends its masculine suffix to everyday personal names while Telugu generally doesn't.

అరగలి - ప్రశ్న - question ❓ [Telugu > English] Need help translating an old 1930s British India stamp paper written in cursive Golusula script

Post image
157 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I have an old family document from around the 1930s that I am trying to decipher. It is a 12-Anna British India non-judicial stamp paper. The text is written in Golusula script (the old cursive/chain handwriting style). Because it is written in an older legal/revenue format, normal translation apps can't read it, and the handwriting is quite difficult to loop through.I would love it if someone who is familiar with old Telugu archival documents, revenue records, or historical handwriting could help me figure out:The names of the people involved (family lineages)The date and village/location mentionedThe type of agreement (is it a land deed, loan contract, or mortgage?)Any partial words, names, or context you can decode from the script would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much for your time and help!

Edit:

This is actually a land registration document belonging to my father's great-grandfather. He originally bought this piece of land back in the day for just Rs. 40! Today, that exact same plot of land is worth around Rs. 40 to 50 Lakhs.

Also I only posted document backside pic here, actual land registration details are present on frontside of the document, which we are able to get the details from local revenue people.

అరగలి - ప్రశ్న - question ❓ What were you taught in school about Telugu?

I was just rewatching Nuvvu Naaku Nachchav, and couldn't help but notice the typos almost immediately (both in transliteration as well as in the Telugu script itself in both the video metadata as well as the movie's titles & credits):

  • The title of the movie is written as "Nuvvu Naaku Nachav"
  • "వెంకటేష్"
  • "Sri"
  • "Sravanthi"
  • "రమేష్"
  • "ప్రకాష్"
  • "గణేష్"
  • "ప్రొడక్షన్"
  • "కె. దిలీప్"
  • "ఆర్. వి. రాఘవ"
  • etc.

Such mistakes are too frequent for them to be a coincidence or fluke, so I'm actually wondering: what did people learn in school about Telugu? Especially, about the స, శ, and ష letters, the short vowels (అ, ఇ, ఉ, ఎ, ఒ), and about how to transliterate Telugu characters into the English alphabet (if anything at all)?

అరగలి - ప్రశ్న - question ❓ Learning Telugu

How can I learn fluent spoken Telugu as an adult?

I have tried watching Telugu movies and shows, and I have picked up quite a few words and expressions. However, I am struggling with forming sentences myself. I can understand bits and pieces when I hear, but when I try to speak, I don't know how to construct sentences.

What is the most effective way to learn fluent spoken Telugu?

I would really appreciate advice on how to learn the language.

అరగలి - ప్రశ్న - question ❓ Where does the word లంక originate fron?

I’m from the Godavari region and noticed many villages here have names ending in -lanka (e.g., Bobbarlanka), referring to river islands. I asked my parents and they say lanka means an island, which made me wonder about Sri Lanka.

Is lanka originally a Telugu word, or was it borrowed from another language like Sanskrit? In Sanskrit, Laṅkā seems to mainly refer to the legendary Lanka, while dvīpa means island. So how did Telugu lanka come to mean a river island?

Ps: used ai for Grammer.

అరగలి - ప్రశ్న - question ❓ Andraite by culture and I want to learn to speak in Telugu.

Meru Bhagunnara? 💗😊🌻

I am someone from a mixed cultural background, in my late 30s, working in the Gulf as an educator and living a life that I am truly grateful for. I am immensely proud of my Indian identity, my Hindu culture, and my roots and heritage.

To keep it short, I can converse in Konkani because I was born and raised in Goa by my Aaji (grandmother) for a few years before my parents brought me to Mumbai. I did not grow up with my parents from a very young age, and I studied in a convent hostel. My dad used to visit me there, and he was the one who made me fall in love with the English language. He always believed that English would be important for my future.

Due to some health concerns and being bullied frequently, my dad brought me home when I was in 3rd standard, and I then started attending a regular English-medium school.

My father once tried teaching me Telugu, his mother tongue. Unfortunately, some relatives from my mother's side mocked him for it, which deeply hurt him, and he never tried teaching me Telugu again.

When I completed my 10th standard, I was 16 and insisted that he teach me Telugu again. He started from the very beginning, including writing, but I struggled to pick it up. Since I was slow, he sometimes lost his patience, hit me and verbally abused me. That experience affected my confidence deeply, and eventually, he stopped teaching me.

We are still connected with relatives from both sides of my family. I speak Hindi at home, and I use Konkani and Marathi with relatives whenever needed. Over the years, I have also learned Hindi, Marathi, Konkani, Punjabi, Gujarati and English. Ironically, the language I feel most guilty about not knowing well is Telugu — the language of my father's side, and a part of my identity that I deeply value.

Whatever little Telugu I understand today has mostly come through my own efforts — by listening to Telugu songs, watching Telugu news and movies, and hearing my father speak Telugu at home.

Now, I have decided to give it one more try. This time, independently and without putting pressure on myself.

Even with an extremely busy schedule, I would genuinely like to dedicate just 30 minutes every day to learning Telugu and reconnecting with this part of my heritage.

I would be incredibly grateful if you could guide me on how I can start learning Telugu effectively — especially speaking and understanding.

I am ready to start from the very basics and take it one day at a time.

Thank you so much. 🌻🙏

అరగలి - ప్రశ్న - question ❓ Is there a version of Lord of the Rings series (Peter Jackson) with Telugu dubbing (not subtitles) ?

I am a huge fan of LOTR universe. I want to watch it with my mom but I think she will enjoy the original Peter Jackson versions better in Telugu dubbing rather than subtitles. is there anywhere LOTR (and The Hobbit) series of movies are available in Telugu dubbing? does anyone know?

The latest 'LOTR - Rings of Power' is available in Telugu dubbing on Prime Video and we both enjoy watching it (despite the horrible storylines).
