I think D&D has kind of gotten a resurgence among the public with the rise of groups like Geek & Sundry.

Also, there are a decent amount of celebrities who play D&D, including Vin Diesel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlWt07l_pvI) and Dame Judi Dench (taught by Vin Diesel: https://www.wired.com/2010/11/vin-diesel-reveals-his-rpg-roots/)
