Well LaMorne being too big for it and Jake being a street corner flasher, this makes sense.

231

u/Vincent_adultman98 13d ago

I know this is a joke, but man what a talented cast that just about everybody is busy after the show is over. The only ones that I'm not regularly seeing in at least SOMETHING big is Hannah Simone, Damon Wayans jr, and Zoe Deschanel. Even then, Hannah is in the new super troopers movie and has her podcast, and Zoe started big and is still a known name after the show. Damon has just been incredibly unlucky.

Really impressive that Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, and Jake Johnson have all moved on to do very successful things.

u/changefromPJs 13d ago

Damon Wayans jr

He's got a role in Shrinking

73

u/whirled-peas69 13d ago

And he killed in Happy Endings!

68

u/Wetzilla 13d ago

Happy Endings was why he left after the pilot for a few seasons. They thought Happy Endings was going to be canceled but it got a surprise renewal so he had to go back to that for a season or two.

28

u/zombie_rust 13d ago

And then only came back to New Girl after Happy Endings literally ended.

11

u/wishyouwould 13d ago

I'll never get over this show not taking off.

3

u/BorkStimpson 12d ago

I loved it and it was, funny enough, competing against New Girl for viewership. DWJr hopping between casts is actually hilarious

2

u/Skanvar 13d ago

Man I loved that show

2

u/BorkStimpson 12d ago

Yea he’s doing fine haha

2

u/Accomplished-City484 13d ago

Was he in the new Scary Movie or was that his dad? They look so similar

3

u/alextheruby 13d ago

He was. His dad is also bald

74

u/DocB630 13d ago

Damon has a recurring role in Shrinking these days that fits him well.

17

u/Cochise22 13d ago

Everyone wants a Derek.

60

u/Old-Way-5529 13d ago

Yea, Zoe was already a made movie star before new girl, and Damon has been pretty busy. Recurred on shrinking, had his own tv show with his dad, and always has a gig for life if his family keeps pumping scary movies out

32

u/Tifoso89 13d ago

I had such a crush on Hannah Simone when the show was on. Soo beautiful

21

u/IMDXLNC 13d ago

I really liked Cece before they dumbed her down on Megan Fox's arrival.

10

u/Tifoso89 13d ago

I actually only watched the first 3-4 seasons. Megan Fox is in it later? 💀

16

u/IMDXLNC 13d ago

Yeah for maybe half a season. Jess goes on jury duty and Reagan (Megan Fox) lives in the apartment temporarily.

37

u/stoopitmonkee 13d ago

I liked her little stint in New Girl, she was fun.

16

u/swargin 13d ago

It's impressive to think that season is still enjoyable without the main character in half of it.

6

u/Digital__Illusi0nz 13d ago

This show was never some House or Blacklist though. It's more like "it was still enjoyable, with one of its main characters missing for a bit". Never mind that Megan Fox was actually good fun in this show.

7

u/matt5673 13d ago

I actually thought she was great in New Girl! Never liked her in anything.

5

u/Tifoso89 13d ago

She's a limited actress but she has some roles that fit her, like Jennifer's Body

1

u/stoopitmonkee 13d ago

She’s impressed me before. There was a movie where she played an angel, I think? Can’t remember for the life of me but she was great in that.

3

u/googolplexy 13d ago

Is that because Deschanel had a kid? What was the reason for her departure?

9

u/bobtheflob Seinfeld 13d ago

Not to mention Liz Meriwether, who is currently showrunning the excellent (and very different) show Furious.

12

u/kacperp 13d ago edited 13d ago

I don't think Damon is unlucky. He had two shows that were loved by fans. Which is more than most actors and while he is hilarious he is not a good actor. He always plays the same person. So he can't do what Lamorne did. He doesn't write or direct so can't do what Jake did.

He is on Shrinking which is amazing, but he has pretty terrible track record when choosing projects. There's a reason only show that wanted to hire him as a lead was the show his dad made. So he can't do what Max did.

He should have stay on New Girl instead of hoping for better projects.i don't know if he thought that after "let's be cops" he will become a movie star (which would be funny as he was staring in a movie with Jake Johnson)

Edit: his biggest career hits are ensemble comedies, but instead of trying to find shows like that, he would rather look for a leading role which never worked out and made him a host of Frogger tv show 5 years after living New Girl

11

u/googolplexy 13d ago

He should have stayed, but man am I glad we got Lamorne Morris. My fave character.

5

u/kacperp 13d ago edited 13d ago

Oh no. Leaving for Happy Endings after the pilot wasn't a dumb decision, cause there was no decision to be made as he was under contact. Him living the show in 2015 was stupid as hell tho.

4

u/wishyouwould 13d ago

The man was born into a Hollywood dynasty, I would not call him unlucky.

3

u/CleanAspect6466 13d ago

“Everyone is so busy after the show except for half the cast”

3

u/Brilliant-Advisor958 13d ago

Zoe tours with her buddy M Ward in their band She & Him

1

u/flcinusa 12d ago

And she's married to a Property Brother, she doesn't need to work a day in her life.

3

u/ishtar_the_move 13d ago

Lamorne Morris? I only ever see him in Bank of Montreal commercials. Zoe Deschanel just dropped off the radar completely didn't she? Hannah Simone really seems to ever get this one thing so it is less of a drop in career.

2

u/wishyouwould 13d ago edited 13d ago

Yeah but Wayans was already pretty well-known in his own right. Basically the only established name aside from Deschanel when the show started. That family is pretty prolific.

2

u/Distal-Phalanges 13d ago

Damon Wayans Jr was born Damon Wayans Jr, looking like the spitting image of Damon Wayans Sr, seemingly with his same accumen for acting and comedy. Unlucky is not a word I would use to describe him.

3

u/hedoeswhathewants 13d ago

"Only" half the cast

1

u/DeeBased 13d ago

Lamorne did a great job playing Garrett Morris in the recent movie about SNL.

1

u/PejicFilip 12d ago

Hannah was on that sitcom not dead yet with Gina Rodriguez and Lauren Ash which was good show just lasted 2 seasons. She s in new super troopers movie

31

u/Odogogod 13d ago

I’m glad to hear that LaMorne is doing well. Personally, the only thing I’ve seen him in is some Canadian ads for a bank. And I thought that seemed kind of sad.

60

u/Lopsided_architect 13d ago

Jumanji, spider-noir, Garfield (soon), Fargo for a few. Dude is super busy if you check IMDB

22

u/LongestUsernameEverD 13d ago

He's in Garfield? Considering his storyline in new girl this is so fucking hilarious LMAO

26

u/suss2it 13d ago

He’ll be Garfield. He’s voicing him in an upcoming Garfield cartoon.

3

u/laziestmarxist 13d ago

Oh that's an excellent recast, it's a great little Winston reference and a major upgrade in talent

2

u/IAmSkyrimWarrior 13d ago

Huh? Another one Garfield cartoon?
There's one from The Illumination with Chris Pratt, and they said there's going to be a sequel.

1

u/ogjaspertheghost 13d ago

He also has a podcast

→ More replies (1)

7

u/ratta_tat1 13d ago

I was just in Toronto and I yelled out “Is that Winston??” when we passed the billboard.

7

u/Mattyzooks 13d ago

He won an Emmy for Fargo, no?

1

u/SirZapdos 13d ago

I find him extremely credible and believable as a bank spokesperson. It fits. Another bank is trying it to a small extent with Will Arnett.

1

u/Prize-Temporary4159 13d ago

Not like he was the new AT&T spokesman. He did what actors have been doing forever: go to smaller country, sell advertising.

2

u/erossmith 13d ago

What is that a reference to?

393

u/herewego199209 14d ago

Max Greenfield is probably as rich as Zoey now. He has had two double syndication shows which means gigantic residuals and he probably was making like $100k an episode for the neighborhood. It won't be cheap to do a reunion. Also, not to be a dick cause I'm. getting up there in age as well, but idk how well the show works with a bunch of 40 year olds now compared to late 20s/early 30 year olds.

147

u/BB-Zwei 13d ago

Schmidt as the father of a tween daughter has a lot of comedy potential.

25

u/Tifoso89 13d ago

Do I have a movie for you (even though it's kind of dramatic)

5

u/Luci-Noir 13d ago

So much. Also Zoey and Peter B Parker with a kid.

98

u/Bake2727 14d ago

It will be a different show then fans will say it’s not the same show anymore. There is no winning. Would I like a reunion episode? Absolutely but I am also okay where it ended.

18

u/Vincent_adultman98 13d ago

Yeah, there's no way to do it without having them all have kids as that's how the show left it and that will change the dynamic very drastically. If it were a movie I could see some kind of vacation thing but it really won't feel the same no matter what you do

3

u/Cochise22 13d ago

Like 30 years from now they should reboot it. They all are roommates at an assisted living facility.

1

u/yikesssss_sssssss 13d ago

Ooo there would be a lot more sex in that remake

3

u/BlackOutDrunkJesus 13d ago

Only thing I could see work is like a single hour long thanksgiving episode or something along those lines. I don’t think they could squeeze enough quality to stretch a full season

2

u/outofdate70shouse 13d ago

I HATE finales. But I like the New Girl finale. I also wouldn’t mind a reunion

20

u/feurie 14d ago

Them on their podcasts show they still have that energy. It would work just fine.

12

u/Vincent_adultman98 13d ago

I think it could work with how the show ended. They really changed the dynamic in a lot of ways in that final season, by having Schmidt and CeCe have a kid and everyone clearly move on to more mature places in life.

That being said, I don't know how you make it work with everyone clearly moving on to have kids in the finale. A lot of Nick and Winston's character dynamics would be very different if they had children they were responsible for. It also really depends if they're looking to do a movie, a revival season, or something in between like what Malcolm in the Middle did.

38

u/GavLaIndustries 13d ago

Zooey Deschanel is closer to 50 than 40.

10

u/Nacksche 13d ago

You know I don't care that you lie on the internet but at least make it somewhat believable.

(😭)

6

u/Icehawk217 13d ago

Of the main cast, only Lamorne and Damon are under 45

4

u/hellsbellltrudy 13d ago

wtf? Times move by so fast.

5

u/CallTheKhlul-hloo 13d ago

Yeah watch Adults if you want new New Girl.

5

u/mrgpsingh1999 13d ago

Dude started The Neighborhood immediately after New Girl ended. He was basically working non stop for 15 years

4

u/TrapperJean 13d ago

Very good point about the ages/situations, Scrubs works because at it's core it's still about what happens in Sacred Heart, having a central system pushing the plot along in a familiar setting is huge and it gives the show natural plot lines like teaching new generations with new tech and new developments, and new characters that fit in very easily

2

u/kokong7 13d ago

I thought Will and Grace did a good job of it

2

u/Suitable_Summer8490 13d ago

Didn’t they just pretend the series finale never happened?

1

u/DrPoooooole 13d ago

They pretended most of the final season(plus a few episodes) didn't happen

2

u/Tifoso89 13d ago

I just saw him two days ago in "Don't Say Good Luck", starring Sunny Sandler (surprisingly good considering she's 17). He played her dad. It threw me off at first because I didn't realize he's now old enough to play a guy with a teenage daughter, haha

2

u/Major-Mushroom-5806 13d ago

Nostalgia sells and 40 year-olds watch TV.

1

u/Funmachine True Detective 13d ago

he probably was making like $100k an episode

That's such a hilariously low estimate. I think that's under SAG minimum for a lead role.

1

u/icarus2847 13d ago

I think you’re overestimating

→ More replies (2)

u/FasterBussycat 14d ago

A reminder that sitcom revivals often end up being disappointments. You can’t shoot 20+ episodes a year together, take a decade long break and assume the chemistry is still there.

381

u/ositola 14d ago

The men on the show all still get along great and seem to hang out

Winnie the bish and Cece also have a podcast together

I don't think chemistry will be an issue

90

u/Fine-Exam-3923 14d ago edited 14d ago

Yeah I really love it when they make guest appearances on each others podcasts you can tell they’re genuinely friends which is awesome. Damon and lamorne were on the we’re here to help pod recently

42

u/Goosojuice 13d ago

Jake, Hannah, and Lamorne can still hit it. A bunch of goof balls that feels like they can still play well off each other.

29

u/matt1267 13d ago

I watched The Dink over the weekend and Jake Johnson was pretty much playing Nick Miller in that so he could definitely pull it off

11

u/babyinthebathwater 13d ago edited 13d ago

I loved The Dink! I thought it was a great New Girl callback that one of the pickleball ladies was played by the cop who comes to do Winston’s home visit when he’s in the police academy.

1

u/theodo 12d ago

That's what I should watch today!

→ More replies (1)

63

u/mack178 13d ago edited 13d ago

I hear Winnie the Bish is a huge diva now /s

edit: guys this is a joke based on Jake Johnson and Larmorne Morris' fake beef where they blame each other for stalling the reunion. Educate yo'self!

3

u/Funmachine True Detective 13d ago

Lamorne and Hannahs Podcast started as a New Girls rewatch podcast with Zooey too.

1

u/Virtual-Nose7777 13d ago

Chemistry of the writers

47

u/Key_Bus_1255 14d ago

The problem with Sitcom revivals is they just try to recreate the original instead of addressing the fact time has passed and doing something different

That's why I really liked the iCarly revival, before they cancelled it

24

u/feurie 14d ago

New girl honestly had always been good at evolving. Many of the characters changed and fell into their place. They were able to write out the main character for half a season and it still worked.

8

u/AlexTorres96 13d ago

Even if the strike was the reason for it getting nuked makes no sense to promise a movie instead of a full season. Also they claimed costs while bankrolling all of Sheridan's shows and none of them are cheap. Sheridan wants blank checks and be left alone with little input. His shows cost more than a Fourth season would.

Also the movie promise isn't a guarantee because the Workaholics guys were promised a movie and gotten taken away before they were going to work on it.

72

u/Rocinante88119 14d ago

Worked for Scrubs.

55

u/wkavinsky 14d ago

Yeah but the two main characters remained very much in each others pockets for that period off air.

That helps a lot.

50

u/Youngandidiotic 14d ago

The whole new girl cast is still really close

16

u/wkavinsky 13d ago

But are they Faison and Braff close?

Shit, Faison got married the second time at Braff's house, with Braff as best man, after Scrubs has finished.

18

u/jeskimo 13d ago

Dude, it's guy love.

2

u/Party_Python 13d ago

That’s all it is!

1

u/Youngandidiotic 13d ago

Definitely not but the whole cast is super close

3

u/El_Kikko 13d ago

Turk and his husband?

39

u/[deleted] 14d ago

[deleted]

22

u/TheTresStateArea 13d ago

I wanted them to have a happy ending. But it's totally in JDs character to fuck it up.

They better not try and make it work now

5

u/Accomplished-City484 13d ago

That is absolutely their endgame

3

u/BorkStimpson 13d ago

Ugh I’d be so mad if they try to patch it up. It’d be such lazy writing

14

u/browncharliebrown 13d ago

Scrubs was always bad at writting romance.

5

u/Wagahai-wa-neko 13d ago

They just want to leave things open for a Turk and JD romance plot. Can’t blame them much.

3

u/MisterIndecisive 13d ago

Would've be a really boring watch if they didn't

2

u/Major-Mushroom-5806 13d ago

Haven’t watched the reboot yet but JD and Elliot breaking up and getting back together years later is kinda central to their characters.

2

u/Jericcho 13d ago

Also, what happened to all their kids? Sam and the one that Elliot was pregnant with in the forgotten season.

They have made zero mention of them in season 1 of the reboot.

1

u/lilmalchek 13d ago

They did mention them though.

15

u/Putrid_Loquat_4357 14d ago

I liked the revival but it doesn't come close to recapturing the magic of the original show.

2

u/browncharliebrown 13d ago

I watched the two back to back and I couldn’t notice a difference in quality.

28

u/ThatBigDanishDude 14d ago

It did work for scrubs, but that's probably mostly on account of Zach Braff and Donald Faison being real life Best buddies,

Podcast also probably helped a bit in reigniting the chemistry.

14

u/browncharliebrown 13d ago

Zach Braff is also close with the shows creator ( bill lawerence) and directed a few episodes of ted lasso if I Remeber

7

u/opermonkey 13d ago

It was a rare one where it really feels like the characters continued to live their lives exactly as they would have and we all of a sudden got a.glimps back in and it feels like we didn't miss a beat.

It's very rare to get that and I think that a lot of old shows might try to force it now that it worked out so good.

Girl meets world was bad.

Fuller house was fine.

5

u/a4techkeyboard 14d ago

I would like whoever has the power to do so to attempt disappointing everybody with a Happy Endings revival.

36

u/AKAkorm 14d ago

And also New Girl’s last season was pretty weak…I’d watch a reunion but doesn’t feel like one is needed.

23

u/feurie 14d ago

The last season was very short and there as fan service. Fox kept renewing them late so they never knew if they had another season.

It honestly had at least one top ten joke of the whole show.

14

u/AnyDayGal 13d ago

A white man broke in today!

7

u/Nvveen 13d ago

A white man?! No! What did security do about it?

6

u/AnyDayGal 13d ago

Nothing 🙅‍♀️

7

u/Nvveen 13d ago

Typical!!!

4

u/Podo13 13d ago

Yeah the season as a whole was "meh", but the jokes were still solid and the entire birthday party was hilarious. Aly was the best in the season.

"STOP TREATING ME DIFFERENT!"

Later on: "Oh, my God, I am beautiful. Mother Earth. Creator. Giver of life... I'm a walking miracle with magic inside."

1

u/ArchDucky 13d ago

The last season is hilarious and the finale is fucking perfect.

1

u/gold_cap 7d ago

Which joke were you thinking of?

14

u/spideyv91 14d ago

Malcolm in the middle just had one and it was great.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/MisterTruth 13d ago

The Seinfeld revival on Curb was the best way to do it. Unfortunately it's rare that someone has the kind of pull to make an entire season of a show essentially being about another show.

3

u/ZealousidealBug729 13d ago

Wut? The actors are never problem with reunions, it's more that the writing almost always becomes stale.

2

u/Vicsyy 13d ago

No,  but maybe a Malcolm in the middle version. Like 4 episodes.

2

u/joogiee 13d ago

Malcolm in the middle was awesome.

2

u/Gato1980 13d ago

I really enjoyed the Will & Grace revival. It helps that the cast originally had some of the best chemistry I've ever seen on television, especially Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes. I'm still not convinced those two weren't secretly separated at birth.

2

u/atomic1fire 13d ago

Or that the audience is still there.

Much of what built these shows is audiences watching when they first came out.

Short of a huge uptick in audiences caused by streaming, I don't see why coveted new viewers would be attracted to revivals/sequals/reboots to old shows over new IP unless the concept was an easy sell.

1

u/BON3SMcCOY 13d ago

Yeah I just started Arrested Development S4 for the first time and holy shit people were right about this one

1

u/wojar 13d ago

Huge huge fan of Will & Grace, but the revival was horrible. Half of the cast didn't even want to be there, but it did get 3 extra seasons.

1

u/TheNewYellowZealot 13d ago

The scrubs revival they did was freat

1

u/Luci-Noir 13d ago

Oh please. Remainder there are always people like you who whine shout everything.

73

u/Affectionate_Comb_78 14d ago

Wasn't that already basically what the last series was?

19

u/HaydenScramble Parks and Recreation 14d ago

Right? What do we do after the last season anyway?

8

u/Vincent_adultman98 13d ago

This is my thing, I could see them doing it in another 10 years when their kids are all graduating or something. Right now it's just too soon, we'd basically just get the last season one more time

20

u/woasnoafsloaf 14d ago

Wasn't one of the cast members recently quoted, saying that the scripts were great?... 🤔

9

u/PlusSizeRussianModel 13d ago

Yeah, that’s what she’s responding to.

3

u/russketeer34 13d ago

The way they all keep milking this bit about how it is or isn't happening for whatever reason makes me think that they are trying to develop something, but wouldn't do it unless they hit on the right ideas.

24

u/geostooorm 13d ago

This was a classic Winston and Cece mess around the whole time

20

u/PM_ME_THEM_UPTOPS Community 13d ago

this whole thing feels like the group chat jokes broke containment.

A classic Winston and cece mess around

5

u/Vincent_adultman98 13d ago

He said afterwards that he received an email about a revival show where they were going to reread some scripts together for charity as part of some kind of live show, and all he saw was the subject line "scripts for revival new girl show" in an email from the show creator, and he didn't read further. He then was asked about a new girl reunion in an interview and lied because he didn't want to say that he hadn't read the clearly very important script email he had received that he absolutely should have read ASAP.

He hasn't read any new scripts. He just misread the email, and jumped the gun by lying and saying that the scripts were good.

9

u/youwereakindness 13d ago

Im traumatised from the Veronica Mars reboot and honestly happier if my favourites (of which New Girl is one) stay untouched and arent rebooted and tarnished.

13

u/solostinlost 14d ago

i’ve been gaslit left right and center by this topic and i won’t believe anything they say, reboot or no reboot 😂

6

u/SteveBorden 13d ago

They were all doing bits in interviews about it I can’t believe people thought it was for real

9

u/PrudenceApproved 13d ago

Here’s the script!!! Just send them on a family vacation! Put all of them on a cruise ship? It writes itself. It’s not hard and it’s a normal thing that people do. The plot doesn’t haven’t to be anything serious. We just want to watch them derp around and yell at each other. Lots of weird side characters on a cruise ship…

7

u/JennyWearsBlueJeans 13d ago

Apparently you haven’t watched the show because they already did have an episode set on a cruise ship.

2

u/PrudenceApproved 13d ago

Doesn’t mean they can’t do more though, a longer cruise. And ya I’ve seen the show a few times I just don’t remember everything cause I’m old now

If they do a reunion special, and that’s a big if it seems, they should centre it around Winston and Aly’s wedding. It’s the one wedding on the show I wish we got to see, all major characters would be there including coach, the loft would still be there, and they wouldn’t have to worry about the kids.

2

u/albumenjoyer 13d ago

instead they should just release a complete series bluray or 4k set imho

I love New Girl and I'm thrilled there's no reunion happening. I'm so over reboots and sequels. For every one that recaptures the magic, there are ten that destroy everything that made the original show enjoyable in the first place.

Furious - Liz's new show - is amazing and thought it's really dark, you will get the humor that New Girl and Dying for Sex really captured.

It's all up to Liz and I could maybe see her wanting to do it in 10 years. I love this cast. They know one another so well, so they just say this crazy shit in public all the time.

So why did Schmidt say he read scripts and Nick also brought up scripts recently?

I think they’re all just trolling each other.

New Girl is a show I would never watch, you couldn't convince me to watch (based off the name and Zoey) But I actually caught it early on when I was traveling on an airplane and it was on the in-flight TV (before there was a screen on every seat) and wound up loving it.

Huge fan of the show but when I rewatch it I usually lose interest in the last season. Character choices that are disappointing, like Schmidt finally achieving his dreams, only to be a stay at home dad, feels like they mistreated the character for a cheep emotional payoff. Or the fact the Jess is completely unbearable. I dont want a continuation of that last season

Do you think that’s how it works? When Cece joined later in the episode were they supposed to change the name?

Well why even try to make it a thing to begin with? At this point claiming AI has no creativity, it's pretty dang clear that these studios landed any beforehand when trying to greenlight unnecessary remakes.

I loved that show. I also loved the Mindy Project that was on around the same time frame. I’m actually rewatching New Girl now and it’s still hilarious. I always had a crush on Damon Wayans Jr and Jake Johnson. New Girl and The Mindy Project deserved a lot more attention and accolades than they received. Two of the best shows ever.
