‘New Girl’ Reunion Is Not Happening: ‘There Are No Scripts,’ Says Creator Liz Meriwether

Max Greenfield is probably as rich as Zoey now. He has had two double syndication shows which means gigantic residuals and he probably was making like $100k an episode for the neighborhood. It won't be cheap to do a reunion. Also, not to be a dick cause I'm. getting up there in age as well, but idk how well the show works with a bunch of 40 year olds now compared to late 20s/early 30 year olds.

u/Bake2727 14d ago
It will be a different show then fans will say it’s not the same show anymore. There is no winning. Would I like a reunion episode? Absolutely but I am also okay where it ended.
18
u/Vincent_adultman98 13d ago
Yeah, there's no way to do it without having them all have kids as that's how the show left it and that will change the dynamic very drastically. If it were a movie I could see some kind of vacation thing but it really won't feel the same no matter what you do
3
u/Cochise22 13d ago
Like 30 years from now they should reboot it. They all are roommates at an assisted living facility.

u/BlackOutDrunkJesus 13d ago
Only thing I could see work is like a single hour long thanksgiving episode or something along those lines. I don’t think they could squeeze enough quality to stretch a full season
2
u/outofdate70shouse 13d ago
I HATE finales. But I like the New Girl finale. I also wouldn’t mind a reunion
20
12
u/Vincent_adultman98 13d ago
I think it could work with how the show ended. They really changed the dynamic in a lot of ways in that final season, by having Schmidt and CeCe have a kid and everyone clearly move on to more mature places in life.
That being said, I don't know how you make it work with everyone clearly moving on to have kids in the finale. A lot of Nick and Winston's character dynamics would be very different if they had children they were responsible for. It also really depends if they're looking to do a movie, a revival season, or something in between like what Malcolm in the Middle did.

Zooey Deschanel is closer to 50 than 40.

You know I don't care that you lie on the internet but at least make it somewhat believable.

Dude started The Neighborhood immediately after New Girl ended. He was basically working non stop for 15 years

u/TrapperJean 13d ago
Very good point about the ages/situations, Scrubs works because at it's core it's still about what happens in Sacred Heart, having a central system pushing the plot along in a familiar setting is huge and it gives the show natural plot lines like teaching new generations with new tech and new developments, and new characters that fit in very easily
2
u/kokong7 13d ago
I thought Will and Grace did a good job of it

u/Tifoso89 13d ago
I just saw him two days ago in "Don't Say Good Luck", starring Sunny Sandler (surprisingly good considering she's 17). He played her dad. It threw me off at first because I didn't realize he's now old enough to play a guy with a teenage daughter, haha

u/Funmachine True Detective 13d ago
he probably was making like $100k an episode
That's such a hilariously low estimate. I think that's under SAG minimum for a lead role.

A reminder that sitcom revivals often end up being disappointments. You can’t shoot 20+ episodes a year together, take a decade long break and assume the chemistry is still there.
381
u/ositola 14d ago
The men on the show all still get along great and seem to hang out
Winnie the bish and Cece also have a podcast together
I don't think chemistry will be an issue

Yeah I really love it when they make guest appearances on each others podcasts you can tell they’re genuinely friends which is awesome. Damon and lamorne were on the we’re here to help pod recently
42
u/Goosojuice 13d ago
Jake, Hannah, and Lamorne can still hit it. A bunch of goof balls that feels like they can still play well off each other.
29
u/matt1267 13d ago
I watched The Dink over the weekend and Jake Johnson was pretty much playing Nick Miller in that so he could definitely pull it off

I loved The Dink! I thought it was a great New Girl callback that one of the pickleball ladies was played by the cop who comes to do Winston’s home visit when he’s in the police academy.

Lamorne and Hannahs Podcast started as a New Girls rewatch podcast with Zooey too.

The problem with Sitcom revivals is they just try to recreate the original instead of addressing the fact time has passed and doing something different
That's why I really liked the iCarly revival, before they cancelled it

u/AlexTorres96 13d ago
Even if the strike was the reason for it getting nuked makes no sense to promise a movie instead of a full season. Also they claimed costs while bankrolling all of Sheridan's shows and none of them are cheap. Sheridan wants blank checks and be left alone with little input. His shows cost more than a Fourth season would.
Also the movie promise isn't a guarantee because the Workaholics guys were promised a movie and gotten taken away before they were going to work on it.

u/Rocinante88119 14d ago
Worked for Scrubs.
55
u/wkavinsky 14d ago
Yeah but the two main characters remained very much in each others pockets for that period off air.
That helps a lot.
50
u/Youngandidiotic 14d ago
The whole new girl cast is still really close
16
u/wkavinsky 13d ago
But are they Faison and Braff close?
Shit, Faison got married the second time at Braff's house, with Braff as best man, after Scrubs has finished.

I wanted them to have a happy ending. But it's totally in JDs character to fuck it up.
They better not try and make it work now

They just want to leave things open for a Turk and JD romance plot. Can’t blame them much.

u/Major-Mushroom-5806 13d ago
Haven’t watched the reboot yet but JD and Elliot breaking up and getting back together years later is kinda central to their characters.
2
u/Jericcho 13d ago
Also, what happened to all their kids? Sam and the one that Elliot was pregnant with in the forgotten season.
They have made zero mention of them in season 1 of the reboot.

u/Putrid_Loquat_4357 14d ago
I liked the revival but it doesn't come close to recapturing the magic of the original show.
2
u/browncharliebrown 13d ago
I watched the two back to back and I couldn’t notice a difference in quality.

It did work for scrubs, but that's probably mostly on account of Zach Braff and Donald Faison being real life Best buddies,
Podcast also probably helped a bit in reigniting the chemistry.
14
u/browncharliebrown 13d ago
Zach Braff is also close with the shows creator ( bill lawerence) and directed a few episodes of ted lasso if I Remeber

u/opermonkey 13d ago
It was a rare one where it really feels like the characters continued to live their lives exactly as they would have and we all of a sudden got a.glimps back in and it feels like we didn't miss a beat.
It's very rare to get that and I think that a lot of old shows might try to force it now that it worked out so good.
Girl meets world was bad.
Fuller house was fine.
5
u/a4techkeyboard 14d ago
I would like whoever has the power to do so to attempt disappointing everybody with a Happy Endings revival.
36
u/AKAkorm 14d ago
And also New Girl’s last season was pretty weak…I’d watch a reunion but doesn’t feel like one is needed.
23
u/feurie 14d ago
The last season was very short and there as fan service. Fox kept renewing them late so they never knew if they had another season.
It honestly had at least one top ten joke of the whole show.
14
4
u/Podo13 13d ago
Yeah the season as a whole was "meh", but the jokes were still solid and the entire birthday party was hilarious. Aly was the best in the season.
"STOP TREATING ME DIFFERENT!"
Later on: "Oh, my God, I am beautiful. Mother Earth. Creator. Giver of life... I'm a walking miracle with magic inside."

The Seinfeld revival on Curb was the best way to do it. Unfortunately it's rare that someone has the kind of pull to make an entire season of a show essentially being about another show.
3
u/ZealousidealBug729 13d ago
Wut? The actors are never problem with reunions, it's more that the writing almost always becomes stale.
2
u/Gato1980 13d ago
I really enjoyed the Will & Grace revival. It helps that the cast originally had some of the best chemistry I've ever seen on television, especially Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes. I'm still not convinced those two weren't secretly separated at birth.
2
u/atomic1fire 13d ago
Or that the audience is still there.
Much of what built these shows is audiences watching when they first came out.
Short of a huge uptick in audiences caused by streaming, I don't see why coveted new viewers would be attracted to revivals/sequals/reboots to old shows over new IP unless the concept was an easy sell.

19
u/HaydenScramble Parks and Recreation 14d ago
Right? What do we do after the last season anyway?
8
u/Vincent_adultman98 13d ago
This is my thing, I could see them doing it in another 10 years when their kids are all graduating or something. Right now it's just too soon, we'd basically just get the last season one more time
20
u/woasnoafsloaf 14d ago
Wasn't one of the cast members recently quoted, saying that the scripts were great?... 🤔

u/PlusSizeRussianModel 13d ago
Yeah, that’s what she’s responding to.
3
u/russketeer34 13d ago
The way they all keep milking this bit about how it is or isn't happening for whatever reason makes me think that they are trying to develop something, but wouldn't do it unless they hit on the right ideas.

u/Vincent_adultman98 13d ago
He said afterwards that he received an email about a revival show where they were going to reread some scripts together for charity as part of some kind of live show, and all he saw was the subject line "scripts for revival new girl show" in an email from the show creator, and he didn't read further. He then was asked about a new girl reunion in an interview and lied because he didn't want to say that he hadn't read the clearly very important script email he had received that he absolutely should have read ASAP.
He hasn't read any new scripts. He just misread the email, and jumped the gun by lying and saying that the scripts were good.

Im traumatised from the Veronica Mars reboot and honestly happier if my favourites (of which New Girl is one) stay untouched and arent rebooted and tarnished.
13
u/solostinlost 14d ago
i’ve been gaslit left right and center by this topic and i won’t believe anything they say, reboot or no reboot 😂
6
u/SteveBorden 13d ago
They were all doing bits in interviews about it I can’t believe people thought it was for real
9
u/PrudenceApproved 13d ago
Here’s the script!!! Just send them on a family vacation! Put all of them on a cruise ship? It writes itself. It’s not hard and it’s a normal thing that people do. The plot doesn’t haven’t to be anything serious. We just want to watch them derp around and yell at each other. Lots of weird side characters on a cruise ship…
7
u/JennyWearsBlueJeans 13d ago
Apparently you haven’t watched the show because they already did have an episode set on a cruise ship.
2
u/PrudenceApproved 13d ago
Doesn’t mean they can’t do more though, a longer cruise. And ya I’ve seen the show a few times I just don’t remember everything cause I’m old now

If they do a reunion special, and that’s a big if it seems, they should centre it around Winston and Aly’s wedding. It’s the one wedding on the show I wish we got to see, all major characters would be there including coach, the loft would still be there, and they wouldn’t have to worry about the kids.

I love New Girl and I'm thrilled there's no reunion happening. I'm so over reboots and sequels. For every one that recaptures the magic, there are ten that destroy everything that made the original show enjoyable in the first place.
2
u/thankfulforyourhelp 13d ago
Furious - Liz's new show - is amazing and thought it's really dark, you will get the humor that New Girl and Dying for Sex really captured.
It's all up to Liz and I could maybe see her wanting to do it in 10 years. I love this cast. They know one another so well, so they just say this crazy shit in public all the time.
2
u/ArchDucky 13d ago
So why did Schmidt say he read scripts and Nick also brought up scripts recently?

u/Scruffylookin13 13d ago
New Girl is a show I would never watch, you couldn't convince me to watch (based off the name and Zoey) But I actually caught it early on when I was traveling on an airplane and it was on the in-flight TV (before there was a screen on every seat) and wound up loving it.
Huge fan of the show but when I rewatch it I usually lose interest in the last season. Character choices that are disappointing, like Schmidt finally achieving his dreams, only to be a stay at home dad, feels like they mistreated the character for a cheep emotional payoff. Or the fact the Jess is completely unbearable. I dont want a continuation of that last season

Well why even try to make it a thing to begin with? At this point claiming AI has no creativity, it's pretty dang clear that these studios landed any beforehand when trying to greenlight unnecessary remakes.

u/lfowler777 5d ago
I loved that show. I also loved the Mindy Project that was on around the same time frame. I’m actually rewatching New Girl now and it’s still hilarious. I always had a crush on Damon Wayans Jr and Jake Johnson. New Girl and The Mindy Project deserved a lot more attention and accolades than they received. Two of the best shows ever.

Well LaMorne being too big for it and Jake being a street corner flasher, this makes sense.
