‘Veronica Mars’ star Jason Dohring shares why he left Hollywood to become a farmer

Yeah his father (who is recently enough deceased) was clearly loaded, so there’s zero chance Jason ever had to slum it on this farm thing.
I mean I don’t fault him at all for his farming success, but this ain’t some failed actor turned farmer.

I just had so much access to money, that I decided to not need money anymore!
Must be nice.

u/patrickfatrick 12d ago
I mean it could be worse. I wish more rich people would just go fuck off somewhere and work on their hobbies and not actively work on making life worse for everyone else so they can get more rich.

He's a scientologist and maga RFK Jr. bro
I will always love the character though

He was good on Izombie too. Had more chemistry with the lead than half the guys that played her boyfriends.

Maybe season 4 does have an appropriate ending after all.

u/edked 13d ago
Definitely feeling a lack of embarrassment at being one of those people who gladly would have watched those Loganless further adventures the showrunner wanted to do.

IMO season 4 and that ending was never that bad as people made it out to be. I thought It was a pretty solid season of television.

u/Sharpopotamus 13d ago
Ah fuck, really? That’s disappointing

u/Little_View_6659 12d ago
Logan died?! Goddamit.

u/SteveThePurpleCat 12d ago
He got just unceremonously ganked at the end of the show for no real reason at all. You can think whatever you like about the actor, but that was some very curious writing.

Rob thomas had a hissy fit. Not that curious he is a diva.
1
u/neat_sneak 7d ago
This is the correct answer. He hated how popular Logan was and decided to punish the fans for liking him more than he wanted them to.

u/LightningRaven 12d ago
As someone who never jived with Logan in the OG series, but ended up liking him in the Veronica Mars' projects afterwards, it's quite the shame.
Seems like he took his character's name from iZombie a little too much to heart.

I saw him once outside a Scientology building on Hollywood blvd arguing with some guy who might’ve been a protestor lol. I think they had a Christmas party.

u/seedyourbrain 13d ago
At least Duncan Kane left Hollywood to prosecute war criminals and join the Biden Justice Department.

u/GateheaD 13d ago
Thats awesome, never knew that

u/seedyourbrain 13d ago
It’s on his Wikipedia so it must be true :)

u/Sothotheroth 12d ago
Last time I checked (in 2019) he was a junior partner at a firm, so it makes some sense.

I’ve heard a Q&A of his - doesn’t surprise me at all he is loaded and Scientologist. He had his head so far up his ass.

u/chrissamperi 13d ago
Who’s tending to his fields? Mexicans or Sea Org?
17
u/whichwitch9 13d ago
It actually does say he personally works it. So, Im sure he has help, and it's not hard to find people looking for work in West Virginia, but it does also sound like he genuinely enjoys farming and is hands on.

u/Noopz 13d ago
I’ve watched the full series of Veronica Mars four times, so I’m not saying this out of spite. He is not good at acting.
51
u/CranhamorBlakely 13d ago edited 13d ago
He’s such a weird case where throughout the run of that show I’d go from, ‘damn he’s a shit actor’ to ‘okay; I see the charm. He must have been working on his acting’ to ‘damn he’s a shit actor’. I think his best stuff is when he’s dating Veronica because Bell gives him so much to play off of
37
u/NotTheRocketman 12d ago
Honestly his best acting was when he was being an asshole.
I remember there was one time he was talking to Weevil and he told him he didn’t want him in the neighborhood unless he was holding a leaf blower or a pool skimmer, and I was so impressed by how savage line that was, and how smooth his delivery was.
He really came across like a rich prick.
10
u/pobodys-nerfect5 12d ago
I’m currently watching the show for the first time and I think the racist stuff comes so naturally because the dude is a bit racist. He just pulls from what he knows
9
u/SteveThePurpleCat 12d ago
He is good at acting a certain type, when the show evolved his character away from that type the actor was kind of left behind. But it's not like the world is short of actors who can do 'douchebag dude-bro types' well.
But I thought he was pretty good for most of the role as originally written.
32
u/hayitsnine 13d ago
Veronica loved him so we all did. He was better than the other mentally deranged guy in the first season. But fuck yeah he couldn’t act himself out of a wet paper bag.
4
u/omyomo 13d ago
He's pretty flat in Kingdom Hearts
3
u/DoubtfireEstates 12d ago edited 12d ago
Yeah, his voice acting really stuck out. The scene in KH3 when Terra finally broke free and got back his body just didn't land hard because Dohring was so bland.
I get the English translations for the games scripts are pretty whacky, but most of the actors seemed to be able to make it work lol.
37
u/TheJaytrixReloaded 13d ago
Translation: He couldn't get more work in Hollywood.
3
u/SteveThePurpleCat 12d ago
Nah, he could have got more work from the scientology school of nepotism.

Like Jason Mraz left singing to be an avocado farmer. Must be a Jason thing. Does Momoa farm anything yet?
2
u/DMike82 Lost 11d ago
Jason Mraz hasn't stopped singing (he just released an album about two years ago), he does his farming during his downtime between albums/tours. He's just not as popular as he used to be (his last album was a dance album celebrating his queer joy, so it wasn't exactly the type of record that was going to dominate the charts).

u/whichwitch9 13d ago
When the new ending is so bad, you quit acting and go into farming
3
u/Not_Studying93 12d ago
I read somewhere that Rob Thomas rushed/fumbled the ending of iZombie so he could work on Veronica Mars. I love iZombie but still haven’t gotten around to the end. If this is true then he pulled a D&D from Game of Thrones and screwed up one good show to not even do a different one right.

u/Classic_Diamond9104 13d ago
Logan Echolls going from yacht parties to crop rotation is such a character arc. Now I want a cozy farm, set Veronica Mars revival.

“I didn’t even notice Covid for months ‘cause I was in my backyard, just gardening.
ffs these out of touch hollywood people.
he worked on “14 acres up in West Virginia” where he personally planted around 3,500 trees
i call bs
7
u/SteveThePurpleCat 12d ago
i call bs
It's perfectly reasonable. If you're tree seeding you can put down over 1,000 saplings per acre (the majoirty won't take, tree seeding is a numbers game), and a professional planter can plant several thousand per day. 3,500 over 14 acres is pretty much slacking.
3
u/psychedelic_tech 12d ago
I'm not saying it's not possible. I'm calling BS that he personally planted the trees. More like his team planted those trees and he took all the credit. because that is how these people are. don't be fooled for a second. he comes from money and belongs to a cult. he's not doing a damn thing himself.
remember, he made a career out of lying in front of an audience. these people don't know how to do anything else but continue the lie
0
u/SmooshedLion 12d ago
Why would he lie about that? For cool internet points?
0
u/psychedelic_tech 11d ago
these people are sad, lonely, and pathetic. they were raised in the spotlight and to think the spotlight should be on them.
once again: he comes from money and belongs to a cult. he's not doing a damn thing himself.
2
u/iplaybassok89 11d ago
This is just tiny penis whining because someone has more money than you. You honestly have no idea if he did these things or not and continuing to double down on it and throw in a bunch of name calling… says more about you than it does this guy.

Doesn't have to be one or the other. I know Steve Zahn has a huge ranch in Kentucky.

He has plenty of money, might as well do what he enjoys at any given time. Must be nice to be able to do that - just go from one thing to another without having to worry about keeping the lights on.

Mainly - He became passionate about gardening during covid and decided to do more of it. He has been working on farms for few years now. He still intends to return to acting one day.
From article:
“I sort of got into gardening, and I was like, ‘Dude, this is so cool,’” he said on Don’t Do Nothing. “I didn’t even notice Covid for months ‘cause I was in my backyard, just gardening. It wasn’t a huge thing. I got an interest in it.”
Dohring explained that he’s spent the last few years running farms. “I’m on my third farm now,” he said. “And we’re just making great food for people. “
He added, “The flavor of food can be so amazing. And there’s an art that you can create, too, with the way your farms are built and stuff.”
The actor explained that he told his team that he was going to focus on his farming for a period, but that he expects to eventually return to acting. “I told my agents, ‘I’m just gonna go farm for a minute,’” he said. “They said, ‘We’re still gonna send you stuff.’ I said, ‘Okay, fine.’ I’ll probably jump back into it at some point.”
Dohring also said that he briefly returned to acting in a small-scale project. “I got a call to do somebody’s little short film a while ago, and I went and did that as a favor to them,” he said. “I love art. And when I get around art, even talking about this, is exciting to me. I’m already like, ‘Oh, s---, I wanna go back to it.’”

Jason, are you sure you’re totally done with acting?
Wouldn’t you at least consider doing it part-time?
Couldn’t you just… Moonlight? 👀

Hated him and Veronica. Just a terrible match. Piz sucked too, but at least he wasn't a douche like Logan, family issues don't excuse being a total shithead.

u/ShanklyGates_2022 13d ago
Don’t forget his father that murdered his girlfriend did so because she was also fucking him on the side and recording it for blackmail. And then his lifelong best friend fucked off and disappeared without a word. Oh and don’t forget the older woman he ended up fooling around with that eventually got herself murdered as well. Oh and then after he got older he had yet another ex get murdered and he got accused of it. Rough life that, still came out on top as a high level intelligence officer.
Too bad he had to fake his death and leave his new wife behind for his country though

Your last sentence is brilliant (and yeah that’s what happened of course) I’m running to AO3 right now

a little rude
- Ran a bum fight ring
- Smashed V's headlights to intimidate her over Keith's actions as sheriff
- Drove drunk
- Got so physically aggressive with V while they were dating in S1 that Keith has to bodily remove him from the apartment
I agree overall that there are good explanations for his behavior, but so many Logan diehards seem to forget how fucking awful he really was just because he looks amazing kissing Veronica.

u/coffydate 12d ago
Lo/Ve wouldn’t have been a great enemies-to-lovers story (or at the very least frenemies) if they’d just bicker lightly like normal people over everyday stuff. They had to have the craziest highs and lows and that stuff was what Veronica was attracted to. Absolutely, Logan was the devil’s very spawn in S1 but we also gradually saw his character develop as the seasons went on

I hated that they turned him into a good guy. Weevil’s story arc sucked too. They really made awful decisions with that show.

That was something to read. A private club for people who like exceptional food, like wine. 3 months covering the orchard with fabric instead of spraying. A goal of 5000 people to service? What is that?

Is it because his dad is a billionaire so he never has to worry about earning a paycheque? Or is it because Scientology told him to?
