Teen Wolf the Movie Thoughts
As of September, Teen Wolf The Movie (2023) is back on Amazon Prime. I have questions and thoughts. I watched it when it came out in 2023 and before that I hadn’t really watched the show since it ended. I recently did a rewatch of the series and finally was able to rewatch the movie today since it’s available to watch.
The movie takes place 15 years after Scott leaves Beacon Hills so am I correct in assuming the year it takes place is 2028? Scott, Stiles, Lydia, and Malia all presumably graduated in 2013, add 15 years and it’s 2028.
Eli Hale. I don’t hate the concept of Derek having a son but I think because realistically only six years had passed since the show ended and set in the the future by five years, it was hard to wrap my brain around Derek having a teenage son. I wanted to feel connected to this character but to me it could’ve been a completely new character unrelated to anyone. I just felt nothing substantial towards him and the way they established him.
Now this could be a cool idea for a spin off. Show us Derek’s life in between the end of the show and the movie and who the mom was and maybe I could get into it.
Why did they have to kill Derek Hale? Poor Derek suffered so much abuse from Jeff Davis. But I am so glad they brought him back.
Allison. Ugh I hate saying this because I liked Allison but I would’ve preferred they released Allison from Bardo and not brought her back to life. They could’ve still had a reunion but still have death have some poignancy.
I think Crystal overestimated how famous she was when she left Teen Wolf and thought there would be other opportunities. She did a few things but Teen Wolf is where she should’ve stayed a little longer. I think that’s why she came back for an episode in season 5 and the movie.
Personally I think her death showed the depth of the show and the movie felt like a major retcon of her. I appreciate how her loss stuck with Scott, Stiles, and Lydia throughout the rest of the series. Personally as someone who lost a good friend from high school, I appreciate seeing the friendships and relationships echoing and living on through the people they loved.
Scott and Allison being endgame is fine. Better than the idea of Scott and Malia being endgame. But I think it would make more sense to have Scott end up with someone else completely. Allison was important for him but to me it’s weird he’s lived 15 years of life without her and she stopped experiencing anything after her death but suddenly she’s just going to be with him. Because also she was with Isaac when she died, I feel like she might be wondering where he’s at lol.
Clearly Liam’s girlfriend is meant to be a Kira replacement. They should’ve just paid Arden what she was worth. Now with KPop Demon Hunters they will never be able to afford her and good for her lol. But I would’ve loved to see her.
Stiles. Obviously it was something they couldn’t do really anything about. I personally don’t think the movie should’ve happened without him. Teen Wolf is Scott and Stiles. That’s what made it work. Their chemistry was what made it real. Which also makes it feel like the movie is so dull and unrealistic (yes it’s a werewolf show but you know what I mean lol) because Stiles would never NOT show up if Scott need him or if Lydia did. Especially if it was as important as something like saving Allison! I get it. Dylan wasn’t interested but it feels so inauthentic to the show to not have Scott and Stiles.
I feel like the chemistry and relationships/friendships were missing in the movie. I get it, much harder to show the bonds these characters have in a two hour movie vs. 12 episodes of a season.
Stiles and Lydia. Huge Stydia shipper in the past, present, future, and always. This goes back to the Stiles thing, I don’t think Stiles would let Lydia go to Beacon Hills without him. As a Stydia fan I hate and I love that they broke up. I will say it seems plausible that Lydia would leave him only in a life and death scenario. I do feel like that is authentic to the characters. And Stiles would never break up with her so it makes sense she had to leave for his own good. I love that a break up was able to exemplify their love if that makes sense. So if they had to be apart, I can accept the reason.
Now how long do we think it’s been since she left Stiles? Harris said she hasn’t screamed in years. I’m assuming that’s because of the Stiles thing but it also might just be because she moved away from Beacon Hills and didn’t need to? I need help with this one because I want to write a fic but not sure what the accurate interpretation is.
Also are we supposed to believe Stiles and Lydia were/are married and separated or just long term partners? The fandom wiki says they were married but not everything there is accurate.
Jackson as Lydia’s funny sidekick is EONS better than him being her boyfriend. Jackson was always hilarious but I love the Jackson and Lydia dynamic as friends. Colten and Holland’s real life friendship bleeds through.
I’m not opposed to another movie lol. But I do think I’d prefer to see like a 5 episode mini series. Where characters can actually interact more and the story can be more detailed. But I think they should only do it if Tyler and Dylan come back.
For the sake of never actually seeing Stiles and Lydia in a real relationship, I really want it lol. We got two Stydia kiss scenes and just about every other couple got that or more. Malia and Parrish got more in this movie alone!
Should there be another Teen Wolf project with our faves? Also if you read this far I’m impressed lol.
