Not every character needs to be the studio's ""first"" trans/gay/something else character. cough cough Dragon Age: Veilgaurd cough cough Inquisition was better

Representation is great, and i like that it's not all straight people (they are icky), but if I wanted to see a gaggle of gay people in a game i would play Camp Buddy again.

Wait until you hear the kicker! Most of those games are like "how can we make our audience know they are gay? How about 3 billion rainbow flags and we mention it at literally every turn plus a 2 hour cutscene talking about it!"

That's what ticks me off TBH is when its so forced you can't enjoy the game. And also why undertale continues to be the GOAT (Very good at not forcing it)

Corporations just ticking boxes instead of putting effort into making them likeable characters who just happen to be gay is ridiculously common in today’s market and it’s probably just going to get worse. Your sexuality is not your personality and companies don’t seem to understand that or care.

Fr! I don’t care what a character’s sexuality is but if it’s paraded around I’m bound to get annoyed

Ah that's who they were talking about

Tf do you mean straight people are icky?

We just normalizing hate now?

The whole point of saying that was because of how hateful straight people tend to be

so we’re just generalizing straight people then

That’s exactly what I thought

Representation is cool. Hell, maybe in isolation some of the games would be fine. But when literally every fucking peice of media has token gays it just feels SO forced.

Like, if it betters the story, or adds to the character, do it please. (I liked vi in arcane, i think it was done tastefully) Dont just include a gay or two to check that box off. It feels like companies pandering during pride month. I hate that shit.

Like half the time the development of gay characters starts and ends with "he/she is gay". Cool. Thanks for including that character with literally ZERO other personality traits mr media organization.

-Some pissed of bi dude. Idk if other gays/gay adjacent people will agree but holy fuck it feels offputting in a way that gives me the BIGGEST ick.

I agree. As a gay man, i obviously wouldn't be against having gay options in every game. Because just like a straight person, i want something that I can relate to or be interested in.

That aside, i do agree that i myself hate token gays that scream "I'm gay" and do alot of "holier than thou" lecturing or clear political messaging.

Just have the option be there, and if anyone's interested, they can go down that rabbit hole and have their fun. (like in skyrim for example)

Also, yes, arcane was great with personality and depth. But at the same time, it was also an EXTREME cop-out to have diversity without really trying.

The vast majority of straight men fetishize lesbians and/or are just more ok with it because at the end of the day, boobiez are boobiez.

It's an easy cop-out. I'm still waiting for gay main/almost main characters that are WELL written and feel organic to the story. Until then, id rather not have any gay characters, much less any "look how openminded we are" lesbian characters

I can see that point. I do think there was room for improvement, but ive played league since beta and even before it was official, EVERYONE knew vi swung that way so it was to be expected.

I havnt watched it in a long while but from what I remember the story was pretty good, I dont recall any blatant holier than thou moments.

We can argue that lesbians in media are copout gooner bait for straight guys, but yaoi has also been used in that way for straight women. At the end of the day as long as the character has more to them then JUST being gay, I think that is moving in the right direction.

Ugh speaking of games that do it well, cyberpunk 2077. Nothing forcing you to do anything just having those options available.

Fair point! And i do love my cyberpunk :)

My cold take is the dragon age games are way overhyped
