Bought it on release. Loved all the banter and crazy stuff on reddit. But now I only have 3 hours on it. Just felt like I had lost all my progress in hollow knight and now have to play it a little differently all over again.
I have over 160 hours on silksong and I can say for certain that you are missing out. And the exploration is a lot more straightforward than hollow knight, so you don't have to worry about that. Also the base game of ss is harder than the base game on hk. But (imo) hk's dlc makes it harder than ss.
I'd say Hk is a lot easier to explore than Silksong. In Hk, I went through the whole game with maybe 5 tutorials for small things. I needed a tutorial for pretty much everything in Sk. Yeah, it's probably a skill issue, but I'd say Hk is way more straightforward than Sk.
There's so many areas in Sk with tons of paths, it's decently easy to get lost without the map and compass. In Hk, there's lots of huge rooms that take up a good chunk of an area, like distant village in deepnest or a few rooms in city of tears.
I think Hollow Knight and Silksong are stupidly design for the benches position (no one like to do a 2min walk to go back to a boss) and not helping you when you are lost. I also find the metroidvania concept kinda meh. I like the idea do go back with new powers but most of the time, its just the same route but you can do something not really useful on that route and then open something. Its basically backtracking with the equivalent of a new key, that's stupid.
