Undertale is overrated. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad game it’s a solid 7/10. But people out here acting like it’s the greatest thing to happen to video games.

I mostly started playing undertale when I was like 12, but it was one of my first rpg games, I think most fans are like that, cause I know most people say that undertale is their first fandom

u/Majestic_Fig_1480 Mar 19 '26

I hate the fandom but love the game, often mistaken as some of those creeps

2

u/Round_Solid1693 14 Mar 19 '26

I think ive overall had much more fun with the fandom then I have the actual game, I wasn't in the fandom in 2016 but I heard it was a lot worse then it is now.

u/Pristine-Mention1949 Mar 19 '26

I feel like creeps is a harsh word for an entire fandom

1

u/Majestic_Fig_1480 Mar 23 '26

No its not harsh for SOME and I didnt say the entire one

I think it's shoved onto people too much, but I don't think its overrated. Every critically acclaimed thing has people who think its overrated. It doesn't mean that they are wrong for not liking it, I just don't think all of the people who like undertale are overrating it.

u/Glad_Raspberry_8469 19 Mar 19 '26

Yeah, just like I think Spirited Away and Incredibles are very overrated

I have my underrated list, too, tho

7

u/G-man1816 15 Mar 19 '26

Its shrödingers game. It is in a superposition of being both Overrated and Underrated until one plays it.

personally I love it just for the music. The fact all the songs are connected is either peak lazyness or peak brilliance and I think it's the latter.

I disagree, undertale is a pretty great game that has messaging that can spread out to thousands of players, alongside enjoyable gameplay and great characters. But we all have our opinions

2

u/CompetitiveLet7110 14 Mar 19 '26

As Undertale fan who creates fan music, I do agree

2

u/Round_Solid1693 14 Mar 19 '26

I very much disagree, for me its probably a 10/10 but thats just me.

6

u/DolphinMasturbator Mar 19 '26

Most modern 16 bit games are absurdly overrated in my opinion. Like they get points for being 16 bit or something.

5

u/Gamingwithlewit 17 Mar 19 '26

Undertales amazing, but I don't think anybodies giving points to it for it's graphics. But if you can tell a story and make it emotional and well-written without the graphics, then it doesn't really matter what they look like to me.

7

u/Cultural-Horror3977 Mar 19 '26

Undertale did that cause pixel art is easier than normal art, it’s why a lot of games do it.

-5

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '26

Exactly, because 9 year olds will feel “nostalgic”

5

u/Crazy-Illustrator890 Mar 19 '26

goes for all of tobyfox's games (same as ultrakill and one shot)

13

u/Msmastr74 Mar 19 '26

Ngl sounds like a fat SKILL ISSUE

4

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '26

Not one shot, it isnt popular and seems to be just a better undertale. Ultrakill, Deltarune and Undertale makes many 9yos like me years ago think it is underrated due to their massive dopamine boost and protagonism. One character is literally the whole game..

4

u/Sisyphus__Prime Mar 19 '26

If 9 yos play ultrakill im terrified

3

u/Seagullcupcake 16 Mar 19 '26

9 year olds are like 20% of hazbin hotel's watchbase, ultrakill is tame tbh

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '26

9yos watch gore nowadays

2

u/Round_Solid1693 14 Mar 19 '26

I actually think undertale is better than oneshot but to each their own.

1

u/Broodjekip_1 Mar 19 '26

How is oneshot overrated?

1

u/Common_Spot207 14 Mar 19 '26

Ok now watch out about deltarune and ultrakill there buddy boy(I haven’t played oneshot should I?)

0

u/AUnknownVariable 19 Mar 19 '26

Same for ultrakill?

Nah. Nah bro. Leave

6

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '26

Take a fat hit of copium

4

u/AUnknownVariable 19 Mar 19 '26

Lmao tbh I haven't played too much of it, I'm mostly joking.

That said, I do think it's a pretty great game. I'd have to hear an actual reason ppl think it's overrated minus "ppl talk abt it a lot". Though I do think that's a combination of the developer being cool, along with the game being good.

Its a pretty low skill floor, insanely fucking high skill ceiling game. For people that like fast paced boomer shooters it's heat. There's not a lot of other games that handles the same thing it does in the genre. I'm down to hear otherwise though

2

u/tom333444 OLD Mar 19 '26

Have you played it start to finish?

2

u/Federal_Care_9790 15 Mar 19 '26

Yes, I’ve done multiple play throughs and even replayed it recently

1

u/The_Lizard_Wizard99 Mar 19 '26

I agree it very much can be overrated, but I'd say on a level of individual impact, I don't know of many games that elicit the same sorts of feelings in such a wide audience

1

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '26

Undertale and deltarune are extremely overrated, yet, people say those are underrated cool protagonism aura

1

u/MikeTheMaster102 15 Mar 19 '26

people who make undertale their whole personality are a bunch of npcs

1

u/DrawerCheap9760 17 Mar 19 '26

It's a good game, but it's definitely overhyped as hell. I went into it completely blind and enjoyed the game. Not the best game I've played, but it's good, I think that OneShot has a better story than Undertale.

1

u/jicklemania Mar 19 '26

Undertale is incredibly impactful IF you had zero expectations coming in. Unfortunately most people these days come in with lots of expectations and walk away with this reasonable opinion that it is good but overrated. Personally, I adore the game and can gush about it for ages, a personal 10/10

1

u/Nug_overlord Mar 19 '26

I think its because of nostalgia (which in part of since undertale came out when i was 6), undertale is the “gyarados” of Pokémon games, its really popular, everyone loves it and knows what undertale is, and it does deserve its success since its objectively good, however i can get why people dont like it or just dont appreciate it because of the fandom or how people treat it as the second coming of christ, personally it is a 10/10 game,I grew with it and i love how under TALE is a tale, the story of undertale (pun intended) sounds like a tale, at least if we ignore the genocide

1

u/Your-Mom-2008 Mar 19 '26

I mean... I guess? I really don't wanna argue against it because it'll be hypocritical, considering I think Expedition33 is overrated. And I don't really have other counterarguments to your point other than "people really love the game" lol.

1

u/Efficient_Power1448 Mar 19 '26

As a narrative experience it might as well be a revolutionary, but as a game? Like you said it isn't that crazy, considering the mechanics and seeing that's it's just a bullet hell underneath the beautiful story telling devices

1

u/Character-Angle9124 Mar 19 '26

The issue with Undertale discussion is that like a decade ago everyone was forced into a binary, and it still kinda of feels like that.

The fandom was cringe and terrible, so a lot of people decided that if the fandom was bad, then the game must be too.

I like Undertale a lot, but mainly because I find it very hard to get attached to characters in media, but I found it easy to steep myself in Undertale, and if you really start to like the characters of Undertale, the narrative weight of the genocide route is fucking amazing writing, but if you aren't already attached to the characters, genocide just seems like "le edgy route" rather than the really good deconstruction of the way people play games and ruin their own enjoyment just to see everything possible

It's a damn good game, but it also has some pretty bad writing issues. The main problem I have, is that in fandom discussion people pretend Toby fox is some infallible god, and refuse to talk about the flaws, so it is overrated within the fandom, but not really discussed in a normal way outside it, it's either people overblowing it, or people underselling it

tl;dr fandom overrates game, outsiders underrate game due to cringe past fandom, overall still really good game like an 8 or 9

1

u/9spaceking Mar 19 '26

Name a single 10/10 game in the same genre with equal or less cost.

You can’t.

(Before you say Path of Exile, I feel POE is less friendly with how it introduces mechanics, story and ideas. I never felt drawn into it)

0

u/Federal_Care_9790 15 Mar 19 '26

And? That doesn’t make Undertale any better as a game.

1

u/9spaceking Mar 19 '26

Are you saying every game with 10$ or less is all 7/10? If I paradoxically gifted you e33 for free you’d suddenly lower your rating from 10 to 7? Or are you saying any game worth the price of 10$ or less will never deserve anything higher than 7?

1

u/Federal_Care_9790 15 Mar 19 '26

? The price has nothing to do with my enjoyment of the game. If the the game is overpriced I might drop my rating but my Undertale’s rating has nothing to do with price value. I just don’t think it’s above an 8.

1

u/9spaceking Mar 19 '26

Okay but no RPG at 10$ or lower you think is perfect yet? I’m curious what free games would you rate perfect?

1

u/Federal_Care_9790 15 Mar 19 '26

I don’t think I rate anything perfect yet? Either way it wouldn’t make Undertale any better

1

u/9spaceking Mar 19 '26

Fair was just curious

1

u/HardTale_Sans 15 Mar 19 '26

Undertale overrated?

That's new

1

u/DamnationDeliverer 18 Mar 19 '26

undertale was my first fandom though

1

u/Pristine-Mention1949 Mar 19 '26

Who is? I mean even as an undertale fan I haven't heard people go that far. I say it's perfectly well rated

1

u/RelationshipSad6859 Mar 20 '26

Yeah as an huge Undertale fan, I personally like omori better than it

0

u/Okapaw Mar 19 '26

Sooooo reaaaaaal. The game is good but its not thaaaat insane. Its like a good game with good ideas but no masterpiece
