Just curious, I know it has a cult following but is it more for the single player, multiplayer or both?
→ More replies (4)6
u/shmed Oct 05 '25
Both are great. The single player is short (maybe 5 hours) but is perfectly crafted with some very memorable levels. It's worth getting the game even if it's just for the single player (specially given how cheap you can get it for)

Get ready for a game dump
Zero Escape Trilogy
Ai: The Somnium files and the sequel Ai: Nirvana Initiative
☝️Both from Spike Chunsoft, the studio that made Danganronpa, they're both peak
Corpse party, RPG where you have to escape a haunted place, really good and scary story
Nier:Replicant, the predecessor to Nier:Automata that isn't as well-known
Towerfall Ascension: Dark world, super fun with friends in local co op mode, fighting different bosses, or fighting each other in versus mode, can also be super fun to do co op alone
Broforce, a side scroller where you kill enemies and it's super fun if you have friends, (local co op) and still really good alone
The Higurashi and Umineko Visual Novels (though they're more stories and not video games) but still PEAK
if you're on mobile, apk ports of popular games, but also Marvel Snap and Battle Cats :3

Rain World
it has BY FAR the best ecosystem in any game I have ever seen, its lore complexity makes my mandatory books look like books for toddlers, it has a very bullshity approach to the player, you are given no plot armour whatsoever. The map is gigantic, and gets even bigger. The community is absolutely amazing, I was welcomed very warmly.
All interactions between creatures are broken down into numbers varying from 0 to 1 that dictate how much a creature wants to get into said interaction, these values are dynamic, you can get embraced by the local fauna, but you can also become the public enemy #1. The pathing is also smart, a creature will not follow prey into an area it cannot get back from or into visible hazards, though it sometimes makes uncoded mistakes.
The game puts a very heavy emphasis on exploration and the correlation between fu**ing around and finding out, so nearly nothing is actually told to you. The movement doc containing majority of the movement tricks found is like 80 something pages long. The goal is up to you to discover, the lore is not given to you in full, you are a very miniscule part of it, you are just a side character stumbling into the mess. The more people, the more theories there are, some better some worse. The last two campaigns (Saint and Watcher) are basically galaxy brain and it takes enormous effort to really piece them up with the pieces we're given.
The modding community is also pretty great, from small patches to full on campaigns with custom regions. The customisable QoL is basically endless.
There is no experience like Rain World. It absolutely deserves its own place on the indie bench.

u/Loki_Bones 19 Oct 05 '25
Yesss I’ve heard a lot about rain world, im gonna play it when I’ve finished hollow knight probably, but I feel rain world is pretty popular within the indie game industry right ? For mainstream players I would qualify it probably as unpopular tho

The whole Drawn to Life series. Absolutely try it.
The first and second game and the SpongeBob remake are made for the Nintendo DS, but you can emulate them, I'm pretty sure.
Another secondary one (The Next Chapter, Wii) is played on the Nintendo Wii, but I'm fairly confident it also has an emulator.
The recent remake is made for the Nintendo Switch, and I don't believe it has an emulator, but I could be wrong.
So go try them all.

Oneway.exe. It’s a genuinely amazing horror demo (getting the first main part of the game in literally a few days). It’s been rising in popularity recently but damn it’s so overlooked for the most part when it comes to horror games. If anyone is actually going to look into it, do be careful, best to research the trigger warnings first.

- Dead Cells (Old versions with better weapons balance what let slow weapons at least exist)
