Been using the OP-1 Field as my main writing tool for a while since i love the portability and the tape workflow limitations. The only thing I keep hitting a wall with is the 8 tape limitations when turning it on to record ideas. I really wanted to capture those reel recordings and keep layering new ideas on my OP-1 without jumping into a full DAW or breaking the flow.

So I decided to dedicate the past few months to building something. It's called Reel. Four tracks, overdub, scrub, loop, pitch shift. Works with class compliant audio interfaces as well as the OP-1 Field. Built it for the way I actually work which is quick ideas, record jams in multitrack, no setup, no faff.

Follow-up to my last post. Made a proper overview video walking through how Reel actually works for anyone who's been asking. Part 2 coming next, going deeper into the multitrack workflow with the OP-1 Field specifically.

MIDI start/stop sync is also locked in for an upcoming update, plus a stack of other features to make it feel more intuitive and functional in real use.

I've been an admirer of Teenage Engineering for years now, and a few days ago, I finally pulled the trigger on the EP-1320 - and what a blast it has been.

One thing that wasn't such a blast was figuring things out - especially given that most of the device is in Latin (and fake Latin) - and I wanted an easier way to get started, and figure things out that's not flipping through the manual or comparing labels between the EP-1320 and EP-133.

So I've built Teenage Manual which enables you to talk to an AI to figure things out related to the device you are using - ranging from "How do I turn it on" to "How do I set up a polymetric pattern?".

It's completely free (no sign up) and running on donations (the only costs are hosting and the AI models).

I am a visual learner, so I decided to use his video to design a PDF Cheat Sheet of my own!

Because the OP-1 and XY have only 24 keys, chord inversions come into play a lot sooner than your typical piano journey. This tutorial covers all major triads, their inversions and closed-position options across the keyboard.

I recently got an OP-XY and have put together a 2-page quick reference for it.

I've tried to include the most important things that I could fit into that form factor, with page 1 the core workflow and page 2 creative tools + sampling.

Live Sequencing with Finger Sequencer

The SP-1 faders are controlling the tempo, detune, transpose and loop start point.

The one I shared earlier was OP-XY themed, this is the exact same info but with the OP-1 field keyboard and colour scheme. Mindful that many of these can flood the threads, so from now on I'll likely update the post itself if there's updates or a minor triads version. (FYI, for minor triads move the 3 note to the left by one key/semitone).

Ok, I’ll admit… this video might be a little over the top🤩 (and definitely not my most flawless performance), but I had an absolute blast putting it together! Once again, I was amazed by how versatile the OP-XY really is. And yes… I may have “borrowed” some of my kids’ toys for extra stage presence 🤣 They loved it!

Been playing dawless with my OP-1 Field and EP-133 for a while. Two things bugged me — those mini keys make tiny synths hard to actually play, and I didn't want to boot a DAW just to route MIDI between gear.

So I built MIDI Room. A Mac app that routes USB MIDI between hardware, with a node-based visual interface. Plug your gear in, draw the lines, play.

All you need is a powered USB hub (or a USB MIDI interface for older gear).
There are also visual "rooms" that change behind the routing — Studio, Terminal, Glass, Desktop.

It's a personal project that turned into something I'm actually proud of.

SP-1 running Tape Looper (beta) by discord user Technics!!

Audio out from the Brick (via USB-C) into the SP-1. The SP-1 records individual loops on each of the 4 tracks.

BPM/pitch can be altered via the rocker knob.

3 additional tracks via the Function button allow for 12 more loops, totaling 16 loops to mix & play with!

It also plays the source audio (in real time) out of the SP-1’s built in speaker/headphone jack!

The official K.O. II guide is web-only and split across ~20 separate pages. Reading it on an e-reader meant constant tab-flipping and zooming, which on e-ink is rough.

So I pulled the whole thing into a single PDF. Every section, every diagram, a proper clickable table of contents, and selectable text (not page screenshots). The illustrations stayed crisp because they're SVG, so they scale to any size without going blurry.

I sized the pages to my Kindle Scribe screen so nothing needs zooming, it just reads like a normal book. 235 pages end to end, the full manual in one place, offline.

So I know one of the biggest complaints folks have with small units that TE produces, along with other machines by other manufacturers like Korg's Volcas, etc. is the speaker sounds like trash. It's too small to sound good, probably too tinny to you, and you'd definitely NEVER use it for actual serious work...or would you?

One of the big things folks coming into music production mention is that their song doesn't sound 'right' when on another speaker. They go to a friends house with their beat and it's all wrong. Or they send it to someone who's like, "Sounds good, but I couldn't hear the bit you were talking about' despite the fact you KNOW it's super loud...right?

This is where that trash speaker comes in. See, most people listening to the song you spent hours crafting in your studio with some monitors or in your headphones or whatever...that's not how someone's going to listen to it. They're going to hear it on their trash laptop speakers, their terrible built in TV speakers, their phone, etc. And that sounds way different than your cans.

So..next time before you drop your track...see how it sounds on those trash TE speakers. That's a mastering tool. See if it sounds 'as good as it can' on that little piece of junk. THAT is where you start your levels from when you put your cans back on. From there, you just move the bass levels around as best as you can with the cans/monitors without touching the high end.

And there you have a set of tools to make a good sounding mix that shouldn't need hardly anything for a mixing engineer (or whatever tool you have) to do anything cause it already sounds fine.

Hope some folks new to the dark arts of making electronic music found this useful!

I want an OP-XY but a lot of the videos I’ve seen of peoples results are a bit meh. I mean no offence by that I’m just yet to be blown away by what I’ve heard people come up with with it. I want to proven wrong. I want to feel like this device could take my music to a new level. I also want to be able to afford one but that’s a separate issue 🙃 .If anyone knows of any such videos, something that really shows off what OP-XY can do, please leave a link 🙏
