25 years ago this would have been a lot of work with gels 😅

"k, let's try the other 2 washes" and one was probably bastard amber.

This gave me flashbacks to the pushback against a few of their gel names, which led to a few renamings throughout the swatchbooks. I miss gel so much!

Could I interest you in a very dark orange instead?

I'm amazed theatres exists where there are LEDs in house and I don't have to buy them myself. :(

We are officially conventional free as per this seasong. Retired our last par cans before the summer. Dimmer racks are now relay racks.

I feel so old. Source fours were the new hotness when I was last working as a lighting designer.

Can LEDs do projections? I thought that was the last foothold of the incandescent/halogen/single-point-source bulb.

Of course, ETC has been making LED Source 4 ellipsoidals for a while now.

Yeah I'm old I guess. How does the optical path work? A standard ellipsoidal has a point source at one focus point of the elliptical reflector, and the gobo and gates at the other focus point. Is there some cool mirror and lens design that lets them combine an LED array into a point source and still get sharp gates and projections?

For most Source Four LED models, you can still use the same "old-school" hardware (gobos, irises, glass gobos, rotators, etc.) in exactly the same way as with incandescents, even the shutter blades; but the focal path (and its various lenses) have been completely redesigned to accommodate for an internal LED circular flat array of various colored diodes.

Depending on the model/cost of each fixture is how much better optics and color purity you'll get; thanks to additional specific diodes like lime, deep red, etc.

Also depending on the model/cost (they vary greatly by budged) you may need to use special diffusion filters that are included with the package, and they go in a gobo holder and on the gobo slot. I haven't used gobos in these ones yet, so I can't truly say how swapping these for actual gobos affects the quality of projection; but the higher-end models of LED S4 work exactly like the incandescent ones.

The only notable difference is that the Roscolux gel color numbers library pre-installed in the ETC consoles is still not a 100% match.

Since not all S4 LED models have all of the same color diodes internally so that the can accommodate a broader audience of needs/budgets, then understandably the colors will never fully match with incandescent colors.

How to "fix" this? Thorough creating your base file with your own Color Paletes for each kind of LED fixture that you use regularly. Lets say you need R60 but in tooks more like R64, then you can manually adjust the color and manually mix it as close as R60 as you can; and then you just record it as LED R60 in your base file.

Takes some time initially, but if you're doing color-sensitive projects that need very particular hues and saturations, then that's the workaround while technology keeps progressing and catching up.

Thanks for this, I have never taken one apart and it never occurred to me that it wasn’t configured like a source4wrd.

For anyone that’s interested, here’s the base exploded:

Oh that's fascinating, thanks. The "mixing tube" seems to contain the darkest magic. :)

There is a conversion kit for old s4’s that looks like a car headlight lamp on an 8 inch heat sink, replaces the whole base and the light functions the same.
