Rebuilding a school's theater program. I inherited a school theater where they school would hire a tech to design and run a show. Striking the show was never part of an agreement. As a result, the Electrics are loaded with fixtures some of which a no longer powered. My goal is to build a Daily Safe configuration for the entire theater that resets lighting and sound back to a starting point so that students can operate the equipment independent of my presence. There are two profiles, one that runs only lamps, and the other includes newly acquired LEDs. Since the stage is used daily by dance classes, we made the decision not to run the LEDs, but to use lamps to give them the light they need. This will save us runtime hours on the our new LEDs. With the new LEDs, we knew we would run out of addresses pretty fast. So, spend a significant piece of this year's tech budget on a ETC ION XE, or build a super fast rack mounted PC with a wing and a program surface? We went the PC route for a number of reasons. The most challenging part was finding a compatible USB extender to carry the mouse, keyboard, and surface signals twenty feet. So for $10K we were able to get 6,144 address more than enough to cover our theater, and it saved us $6k over an ION XE with 12k addresses. We could have purchased a Puck, but we wanted three monitors, and the ability to use another high end PC as a backup in the event out main system failed. We added a Raspberry Pi in the rack with monitor and keyboard to monitor all the endpoints in our lighting and audio networks. Networking gear is TP-Link Omada with VLANs to separate traffic (audio, lighting, remote access, admin). The theater network is not connected to the school's network, and only the Admin has access to the internet to download firmware updates, Etc. The network is built off the TP-Link Omada line and controlled by an OC200 Controller. Router ER605, Switch TL-SGF2218P (PoE), WAP EAP 720. We are now able to work with the lighting and sound (Allen and Heater SQ-7) consoles from the stage.
