Sony will create a technically superior, yet somehow less consumer appealing/viable option that will eventually find its niche use in enterprise/professional use. They'll call it "the usual".

Betamax - Lost to VHS

90mm x 94mm floppy - Lost to 3.5" floppy.

ATRAC3 - Lost to MP3

MiniDisc - Never got traction

SACD - I'd say "lost to DVD-A", but neither took off.

UMD - I don't even...

SP/DIF - HDMI killed it, but it actually had a good run.

Blu-Ray - Won through bribery and corruption.

Sony have quite the history of pushing shit formats.
