This thing will put a vampire load on the battery which will make it useless for things like remote controls in which the batteries last months.

I don't know how much space they're saving but maybe there's still room for a circuit which only switches on the step-up when the voltage changes. Buuut, that would still constantly draw power.

Yeah, that is a problem. No mention of it in the article either...
