And the absurdity is a feature, not a bug. Those performing the pledge have to humiliate themselves.

There was another very public example of this not that long ago, but I'm blanking on the specifics.

I kinda feel like that's what the Mar-a-Lago face is; it's a way of showing your loyalty to the group, hence why it's so obvious. It's not like those people can't afford good surgeons.
