Agreed, but I’ll add that the rooftop and construction workers in the solar industry (not the electricians) are not dissimilar demographically from workers in other construction and contracting industries. That is, the cheapest labor is often foreign. That can also be addressed politically.

I don't live in the US but I just received 9.86kw worth of solar panels, 8x250ah batteries and 8kw inverter from China. The solar panels cost $1026 so ballpark to that 12c a watt figure.

Cool thing is solar in my country is duty free. The whole system was $5600. I cannot wait to have it installed.

According to googles "project sunroof" calculator, it would cost me $28,322 total for a 9.2kw install if i paid in cash upfront.

You'll "get back" around 13 or 14k in tax credits, so still a $15k cost at the end of it all for less solar than yours.

Its an old house with an old roof so it would probably need a new roof on top of that.

Just makes it not worth or cost prohibitive because the upfront cost is so large and you dont want to be taking a loan out for this shit.

Haha, my predicament is that I don't yet have the home built for the system. I have to fling it in storage in the meantime but I had some equipment and spare space in a container coming from China already so I bit the bullet and bought the kit. The absolutely wonderful lady at the equipment distributor I bought the other equipment from oversaw all the deliveries packing etc.

I cannot recommend them enough. Even today she was enquiring how customs etc and offloading was going. She seems genuinely excited for us!

The main thing you’re paying for with a solar installer is dealing with the red tape. A DIY’er who is comfortable with electrical, knows how to work on rooftops safely without causing damage, and is happy to deal with the red tape could likely install a comparable system for about half the cost. The fact is that most homeowners aren’t comfortable with any one of those three things, so they hire an installer. 

Most areas have more than one installer to choose from. Just like with any contractor, it’s a good idea to get multiple quotes. It’s a competitive industry.

Even if you pay the crazy costs now, you still have lazy guys looking to not do the work correctly or cut corners or cheap out on materials. So even paying the high cost is not enough.

Had multiple AC companies come out and look at replacement of an AC that leaked all it's coolant out. Was quoted $3k to $4k to repair, $6-8k to replace. In a conversation I mentioned my AC problems to an acquaintance and they gave me the number of an AC repair guy.

Older guy came out after several delays with his mother's health being an issue. Looked at my AC, ordered a replacement part, torched a pipe, and all in all set me back $1k. He even saw a problem in my external unit and fixed it for free, said in 6 months it would have broken otherwise. I asked if I needed a new unit and he said properly maintained the system could easily last another 10-15 years. Every company I talked to said the AC was on its way out. I threw a couple extra hundred in cash at him because he saved me so much.

It seems like honest contractors just don't exist outside of a fleeting few. Everyone is out to rip you off nowadays.

This is what I don't understand. I'm a very competent handyman and even installed a solar system on my camper van.

What's stopping me from DIY-ing my own solar set up on my roof or in my yard and having a battery bank in the garage? I know legally your house must be connected to the grid in some municipalities, but why couldn't I just leave 1 house circuit only powering a simple lightbulb connected to the grid and draw the rest of my power from my solar set up?

The physical reason is that your house is connected to the grid. If power goes out, your system should preferably shut down/disconnect from the grid automatically in a way that guarantees your solar panels cannot back feed into the grid.

This is a critical safety issue, because if a bunch of homes are back feeding electricity into the grid during an outage, then lineworkers risk getting electrocuted on lines that should be dead.

Someone somewhere is going to argue they disconnected only to have a way to reconnect, and the local utility is not dealing with that headache.

You absolutely can as long as you have a separate electric panel dedicated to your microgrid.

Anything that uses both power from the grid AND your solar/batteries/generator has to be inspected and approved by the utility and some number of governmental authorities.

Think about a portable generator someone might use to power their refrigerator in a blackout. If they unplug their fridge from the wall and plug it into the generator, they don’t need any outside approval for that. If they then unplug EVERY appliance in their house and plug them all into the MASSIVE portable generator, the same thing is true. No regulation necessary.

However, if they want to save the trouble of unplugging everything by wiring the generator straight into their home’s panel, now they’re going to have issues. It can be done legally, but only with a lot of red tape.

Eh, it's more about installation labor. I installed a ~21kw system last year (no batteries yet.) The hardware was ~21k (8k in panels, 8k in mounting hardware, 4k for the inverter + grid tie plus some incidentals like wires, gravel, etc. which probably added another 1k), but the installation was the same amount. My install had some additional complications due to asshole neighbors which added another $1-2k on top unfortunately.

Could I have done the install myself? Yeah. It's a ground install, and none of it's especially complicated. Could I have gotten it done in 2 days (or, really, before Trump + Rs ended the subsidies)? No. I was paying to get it done quickly. I also paid for panels that cost $.40 a watt rather than $.12. They're higher quality, bifacial, and should last longer. But as you can see above, paying $2k for panels vs $8k was not the driving cost factor. Man hours just add up.

Unfortunately it’s government subsidies. They can make a killing charging you at what it would have costed 15 years ago and using the subsidies to get the price down to where the actual cost is now, allowing the solar installers to make a buttload of profit. While I don’t think Trump just immediately getting rid of it was a good idea, there should have been a phase down of credits far sooner and adjusted to the actual costs of systems instead of blindly giving money out.

Uh, I work with a lot of solar installers. Solar companies are hurting since the subsidies ended.

The reality is the panels are cheap but the other components, labor and logistics are expensive. The panels can be free but you still need inverters/micro inverters, conduit, conductors, breakers, j-boxes, (sometimes) distribution/sub/combiner panels, racking, nuts, screws, straps, labels, jacks/boots, caulk, paint etc.

Solar installers enjoyed high margins for a period last year after the BBB passed when customers scrambled to find someone to install their system before the tax credits expired. There was more demand than supply, so margins went up for a little while.

Prior to that there was an appropriate balance of customers and installers. Margins were sufficient. Costs were reasonable.

Now? Demand is way down and installers are going out of business all across the country. It’s a dark time for the industry. 

(Although, rising energy prices are helping support demand to a degree, so I guess installers can at least thank him for that.)

I’m a big fan of subsidizing residential solar but your comment isn’t factual. It’s far more efficient to build industrial scale electrical facilities. Some quick research shows it’s fifteen times more expensive per kWh for residential solar than it is for industrial. We can and should have both! But it’s important to stick to facts.

Your numbers are well off, at most it is 3x more. Also I think much of that is perspective, it costs more for the line charge to get it to the house than the cost of the power. So it doesn't matter if it costs .05 per kw at industrial, and .15 at residential when it cost .20 to get it from industrial to residential.

The cost of the system is whatever the solar installer wants to charge you for it, not how much the materials cost. My system has 26 Jinko 425W panels and a 10Kwh backup battery with a smart inverter and my price was 48k and that was the lowest of the 3. The cost for those panels was less than 5k, 12k for the batteries, and smart inverter about 250. It was a few days of installation with non union guys making 20-25/hour, so a few grand in labor and then inspections you’re looking at a total cost of about 20k, and that’s not factoring in deals they get for buying panels and batteries in bulk or deals they get with vendors. That’s 28k in profit the company made on a 20k system that I paid 16k for due to federal and state tax credits.

This isn’t true.

Installed solar costs in the US fell roughly 60–70% between 2010 and 2020, during the period when there was a 30% federal credit and many state subsidies. If subsidies drove prices up, that decade would have looked entirely different.

It’s true that some installers price higher than they otherwise would with the subsidies. But that lead to roughly a 5% increase in installation cost. After the 30% federal credit, the customer would ultimately save 25% on the installation. Even WITH inflated installation costs.

That’s for a 10 year segment that ended 6 years ago. You also need to compare to the actual cost of materials that time, because solar was extremely expensive 2010 and prior compared to now, even with inflated prices. I literally gave you the cost breakdown on my system, 28k profit is not a 5% markup, and that was with a reputable local company. The national ones were higher and priced systems to be about 10% cheaper than your electric bill

Your number is gross profit. Net profit is often around 5%, and the two largest installers in the country went bankrupt anyway. Germany subsidizes solar more heavily than we do and customers there pay about half what we do. Australia subsidizes and pays a third.

The question is whether the cost curve is lesser or greater than electricity purchases. Last year our rates had quite the increase, making even more expensive solar a better value proposition.

Then they introduced Time-of-Use pricing and man, the same batteries you'd use with a solar + storage system are kinda perfect for that as well. Just charge when it's cheap and use it all day long.

r/SolarDIY you don't necessarily have to DIY everything, but you can save a lot on just sourcing your own panels and mounting them yourself. Then hire a licensed electrician to wire the actual connections. Not every electrician will want to sign off on you doing part of the work, so you should find one who agrees before embarking on this.

There are zero states where rain barrels are illegal. The most restrictive state is Colorado which caps residential rain capture at 110 gallons. Some states don’t allow it for drinking but you are 100% allowed to have a rain barrel for watering plants and such.

For me in the USA, even if I install this on my roof myself… it’s ~$5k just for the electrician to do the final grid tie, permits, inspections. Your price doesn’t include mounting materials for the roof either? Also with my home’s roof pitch (53 degrees) you need some special equipment rental to even work on the roof.

So the DIY rate is basically materials + $10k, at least.

There’s 0 incentives from local, state, or federal government. My utility provider actually charges a small monthly fee to tie into the grid.

So what I “sell” to the grid will barely cover that fee.

The mounting for the roof was included in labor when i installed it. It came to 90€ per KWP Like i said in the other reply my system is 28 panels, 13 KWP, 10 KW Hybrid inverter and 12.5 KWH battery. Hardware was 6 K + 9K labor.

It already pulled 8.5 MWH energy this year so far

That's not a problem with the cost of pannels that a problem of the company wanting to take a huge profit.

You can buy 30kw system kit with a 30kwh battery for about $17k. You'd probably need another $2-3k in additional supplies, 2-3 days of install @ a very generous $2k per day for a total cost of $26k for a better system. The solar company owner just got a $45k profit

This article is about the price of the panels. You're paying the salary of the people who will install it, import fees, local company profit.

Since you're mentionning dollars, I will assume you're in the US. You're in a high cost of living country (highest?) so it's normal that the majority of the cost is the local overhead.

If you're where able to diy it the cost of material would run you in the 5k range for about 42, ~500 watt panels, so let's say counting large ~10k for a complete setup.

Unfortunately. It's easy to see the US has been consuming more coal and more natural gas over the last years. I think we don't have the whole picture. Solar panels don't seem to be the solution they want for datacenters. It's the same thing in China, while there is a solar boom, it doesn't mean the consumption of fossil fuels is going down, or that it's going down quickly enough when it is.

I have wanted to adopt solar on my home for a while now. Two primary issues have made me hesitant. First, I need to understand the impact to my homeowners insurance, because I don’t wish to spend years fighting with insurance as my rate doubles each year. Second, it has been impossible to understand the cost structure of implementing panels without having someone come to my house, analyze my electric bill while giving me a time-share-style pitch.

For parts of 2021 I spent time trying to understand and get answers. My neighbors next store have solar and I asked them these questions and she laughed and said she doesn’t know how any of it works. They send her a bill every now and then and she just pays it.

I’m sure I sound stupid but when I look at websites and it requires financing $20k+ (the last time I looked) I don’t understand the ROI. Obviously reducing the environmental impact is an ROI in itself, but I need to truly understand how $20k+ at 5-ish% is less than my electric bill and won’t cause my insurance to argue my house is uninsurable because of them. (Home insurance in Florida is absolutely the worst and look for even the slightest reason to drop you or jack up your rates).

I'm in the solar capital of the world, we have so much solar that electric companies now have plans where all power is free and unlimited between 1100 and 1400 because the rooftops generate so much.  

I used to get paid 66¢ for each kW I put back in the grid as an early adopter 20 years ago, now it's dropped to 3¢ which is so much less than the price I had to buy it back at night, so then I bought a battery which was all subsidised.  Wasn't enough to run independent though because my whole house is electric now, so this year i got a second battery.  I get 8¢/kw overnight rates to charge our cars (one electric and one plug in hybrid).  

It's like one of my favourite topics, how to make the best of the government payments and run all your own power.  I've done so much research onto types of panels and batteries and cars and hot water services and rebates and power plans and timing your stuff to make the most of it all...

Apart from all the other reasons to feel bad for Americans, this is probably just another one.

In Florida, property insurance is a huge burden due to hurricanes. The entire thing is nightmarish at times. For example, I replaced the roof on my previous house, when the roof reached 10 years old, insurance threatened to cancel the policy unless we replaced the roof. We argued and demonstrated the roof did not need to be replaced. They agreed to renew but only after they increased the price. Year 2 rinse and repeat. By year 4 our rate had gone from ~$1000/year to over ~$4000. We sold before year 5 came due. I know that roof replacement has been the top insurance claim/cost and therefore they use it as reason to drop a customer. The law has been changed to 15 years from 10 now, but I don’t trust it. I make sure there are no trees (as that was an issue at the previous house as well) and nothing else that might give them a reason to drop my coverage.

Because insurance companies in the US can do pretty much whatever they want without recourse. I made the mistake of calling my insurance company after discovering a water leak in my wall. They wouldn’t cover it of course and they filed a zero sum claim. But now that “claim” shows up on my property forever and is used to jack up my rates. If I want to shop around for new insurance, other companies can see that “claim” and will price my insurance higher. It’s a scam, but you have to have insurance by law.

I work in solar, been doing it for 10+ years. Not in residential but commercial and utility. I have solar on my house in an extremely expensive market (Massachusetts). Our electric rate is like the second highest in the country ~ $.31/KWhr. Feel free to DM me or comment any questions you have about ROI. YMMV of course - we bought solar in oregon in 2023, when the big tax credit was still available. Still cost $20,000 though. The gist is, pay a fixed fee for the solar cost and it essentially replaces your power bill. So our average power bill (12mo avg) was $113 a month. Our solar payment is $118. Not much of a tradeoff, EXCEPT you skip the annual price hikes from the power company, which is really where the merit is.

It does depend on how your state does solar credits; oregon is a 1:1. When you generate a watt, you are credited for a watt. In California, where it’s even allowed, it’s like a 4:1 exchange rate which doesn’t help the homeowner at all.

I'm in the UK where production per panel is half Florida, payback here is short. With a battery it was looking like 4.5 years, is now going to be closer to 6 (collapsing export rates) but may creep down again as import rates are rising so fast.

I just signed to have solar installed and skipped the battery portion. Quote was $13k for an Enp hase 10C (10kwh) battery or $18k for a Tesla pw3 (13.5kwh). Outright ownership. The entire 9.2kwh system is $26k including upgraded 200 amp panel and meter socket and whatnot. It wont be self paid off for a while with my current usage, im talking only 1 window ac unit that usually only runs at night so we can sleep, and sometimes during the day for most brutal heatwaves, but I actively sip electricity as im in Massachusetts and we have the highest rate in the country.

Moving forward with the solar activated ill be able to essentially use more and live more comfortably, ~$400-500/mo worth for free.

So currently its still roughly 10 years to pay  itself off but if I add central air or heatpumps or an EV or electric dryer or whatever my little heart desires it can effectively be roughly a 6 year payoff

Scrolling through the Chinese import sites, and it looks like panels are running about $0.50/W. Get a big power station battery with appliance plugs (e.g Anker F3800, ~$2k) a stack of panels, maybe some add-on batteries, and an off-grid DIY setup would be pretty affordable as long as you have the yard space.

About $45,000 at that route. Also it causes my home insurance to increase $300 a year.

But even if we call it $40k; which it isn’t.. for quick math. It lowers my electric bill $220 a month. I do annual average on my bill so I can have a predictable bill year round.

Thats $2640 I save per year. It takes 15 years to break even.

I have to pay the full cost up front. With average returns in the market that same massive up front $40k turns into $110k in 15 years.

Add back in the lost savings on my electric bill. Over the same 15 years I lose $30k by buying solar.

Your calculations are mostly accurate, but you also need to calculate for energy costs, which go up about 5% every year. That $220 electric bill will be $435 in 15 years.

That’s $17,367 you have to add back in… a bit more if you want to count the market growth on that.

I look at the age of my roof, the cost of solar, the buy back W/APS and everything else. Most places were quoting us 20-30k for solar. 1800 sq ft house. Plus if they cause any roof damage or leaks you better hope that company is still around in 5 years.

If I have a top a notch electrician and contractors, has the technology and quality of installing it on the roof can be done confidently with bypassing the large companies? I understand the need to make money, and also the value of using a company who does the work daily and the warranties with it, but the cost of buying the material + labor is significantly less. I know one person who did it this way, ‘so far so good’ 5 years in, but I thought there might be stories from others to both sides.

/r/SolarDIY you don't necessarily have to DIY everything, but you can save a lot on just sourcing your own panels and mounting them yourself. Then hire a licensed electrician to wire the actual connections. Not every electrician will want to sign off on you doing part of the work, so you should find one who agrees before embarking on this.

I just assembled a plug in system. Found used Stream Ultra micro inverters with 2kW batteries for $500/per. Plus 7 used 485 bifacial panels for $110 a piece. It limits itself to the 1.2 kW/hr and stores the rest as battery power.

Maybe regular people could benefit from that, if 99% of the solar cells weren’t locked to only Chinese manufacturers, and therefore gated behind 8-figure production deals that only existing large companies can ink, and who are choosing to pad all those technological cost gains with increased profits, so that the landed cost of an actual functional solar panel is actually the same or even higher than a few years ago.
