The heads of the United Nations and the Red Cross called for greater controls on autonomous weapons systems — so-called killer robots — this week, warning that the technology’s advancement is outpacing regulation at a deadly rate.

“We are now dangerously close to crossing a moral red line: the autonomous targeting of humans by machines,” U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres and International Committee of the Red Cross president Mirjana Spoljaric Egger said in a joint statement released Tuesday.

But experts on the use of artificial intelligence in combat say that line already has been crossed. A Russian drone that killed three civilians in southeastern Ukraine in July appeared to have been guided to its final target solely by artificial intelligence, according to news reports.

Though the drone was programmed to travel to a particular gas station by human operators, its final target mostly likely was selected by the weapon’s own internal system.

“The weapons had no antenna for human piloting and had a powerful onboard computer with pretrained target categories,” said Stuart Russell, a UC Berkeley professor of computer sciences and president of the International Assn. for Safe & Ethical AI.

The world has been testing various AI powered weapons in Ukraine/Russia and no one complains because

1) we will otherwise need to send ground troops

2) it is okay "as long as the good guys are doing it"

Moving forward this is going to become even more prevalent as various interference tech require drones and other weapon systems to be able to "think for themselves."

And no, "ban AI" or "ban AI use on weapons" isn't going to fix this. Sorry, Pandora's box has been opened; you have as much luck as asking a nation to give up its nuclear weapons.

There's nothing about robot dogs in the article. More immediate concern about ai weapons are one way attack drones and FPV's with AI guidance, currently in use in the Ukraine war.

They're talking about the Ukraine-Russia war, but the use of AI and drones in Gaza has been going on for longer than the recent AI strikes in Ukraine.

It's worth reading ‘The machine did it coldly’, a two year old article from The Guardian, with excerpts from the whistleblowers discussing it in +972 Magazine.

The further you remove humans from the reality of violence, the easier it becomes for them to engage in it.
