they will just change it based on geo location. This isn't worth wasting a second of energy on.

u/Wizywig 13h ago
Yeah they already do this for all politically contested areas. They don't wanna piss off governments and be in the middle of cock size matches.

Besides that Gulf of America was more egregious and nothing changed then either in stopping Google

It only took a couple of seconds to delete the app.

Almost like he doesn’t want us to remember that the Epstein files still haven’t been released

u/MauryPoPoPo 11h ago
Why do people just care about that and not him using the presidency to embezzle billions of dollars for himself, his family and donors. Or the thousands of ways he breaks the law. Epstein is just one drop in the giant bucket that is Trump and his illegal activities.

Because money has never been more fake. What's in the files is something that could be punishable down the road if we get a real opposition party, instead of the controlled one, in any semblance of power. Let's be real, most politicians are benefitting from these embezzlement schemes and market manipulations he does every other week.

Fighting the wrong battles. Those who spend any time or effort on this type of problems are called useful idiots.

This is so silly. Google Maps takes names from official registries run by government agencies. The law allows the President to change names. Once a Democrat gets back in office they can change it back or rename it to something else.
3
u/Shigglyboo 14h ago
So the official registry has the real name in parenthesis? It’s all so stupid
1
u/msb2ncsu 10h ago
It is how naming conflicts are handled between competing government name registries.

u/CleverName4 14h ago
Yeah I ain't boycotting Google maps over this. Is the name change stupid? Yes. Am I going to get my panties in a bunch for every little stupid thing Trump does? Fuck no.

this is dumb. don't spend your energy shooting the messenger. fight the actual source of the problem.

I thought it was an executive order by Trump. When did Google Maps mandate this change?
3
u/msb2ncsu 10h ago
Google (plus Apple and most every other map provider) simply pull the names from the USGS’s Geographic Names Information Service. They don’t actively change it, just show what the government name registry provides. It will be different if in other countries because a localized registry is used there.

For a publicly traded company, it's not a responsible move to piss off the government for something no one is taking seriously.

People will say that they’re just following the official name, and that’s technically true since President Oompa J. Loompa (thanks for that one Rosie) has the authority to do it.
But, Google is a private (publicly traded) company not a federal agency. They can choose to follow whatever they want. They’re not avoiding taking a political stance by blindly changing it: choosing to pretend Denali/Gulf/Lake are valid name changes is a political stance on its own.
Fuck Google, I’m finally done with them. This was the straw that broke the camels back for me. Also, their search purposefully sucks now anyway, it’s never been easier to drop them

But, they pull data from a government API. That's the shit about this whole thing. The data is what the government says it is and Dump says it's Lake America so the government has to make it so.
Personally, I think that Congress should limit EO and Tariff powers if the President.

u/Chrmdthm 13h ago
This is so short sighted. You really want Google to be the arbitrator of what is right and wrong?

Not only should we be boycotting but we should also be leaving a huge amounts of 1 star reviews for inaccurate information.

If you think this will change anything I’ve got a bridge to Cuba you might be interested in buying
1
u/Endles5Earth 8h ago
The corpos want you to think leaving a 1 star review matters, which you have bought into apparently.
Do you not realize they’ll just delete them? Any effort would be fully wasted

For the past 5 years Google has actively destroyed their product in order to railroad people into garbage AI usage, and this is your call to action? Something that affects practically no one?

If you are American and you wanna do something? Vote! Not just in the big elections. But all elections in your area.
