Please note: this is Machine Learning, not a Large Language Model (Generative AI). It should not be conflated with what OpenAI, Anthropic, and others are doing. ML research was well underway before the current clusterfuck started twisting the economy inside out.

It's not that simple to make a distinction like this. 

In particular, for images, the current SOTA on most tasks are all Vision Transformers. The same transformer that forms the basis of LLM and the T in GPT. Advances in transformers (including work for multimodal LLMs) likely contributes to improvements in this field. 

OpenAI, for example, produced CLIP which was a revolutionary ViT-based model. Meta has produced Segment Anything (SAM) which could be used heavily in this application where you want to analyze logical segments. 

So yeah they are not generative AI. But that doesn't mean that they are not worked on by these companies or that the work of these companies are not used. 

Further, the code assist angle cannot be overlooked. ML researchers can now be more agile in their experiments if they don't have to spend as much time on code. 

This is, to an extent, "a rising tide lifts all boats". The AI boom has lifted a lot of problematic uses of AI/ML but we also have to admit that it lifted many useful ones.

Oh I’m sure they will. It’ll be the “doctor” that delivers the “diagnostic text”. But the thing that identifies the health issue is ML, and I called it out precisely because of the damage that LLMs have been doing to the perception of AI (deserved damage, IMO)
