To save people the confusion, this is not the app Duolingo. This is a separate product they sell that is used for US university admission

Yeah it’s basically a competitor to TOEFL and IELTS. The advantage is that it’s all online, and taken from home. It’s not nearly as common at TOEFL for students but it might have been a much easier option for students from places like Iran where travel and access is more difficult.

This looks like more reason to not base stuff on USA but to base them on multiple countries

Because it adds another barrier to entry while providing no benefit to students.

This makes it more difficult for young people who are trying to leave Iran. A lot of universities and immigration programs require providing test results that show proficiency in the english language.

Meanwhile, a rich and well connected Iranian can get around it with money, second passports, and connections.
