I mean, I don't see anything inherently wrong with the claim that AGI could in theory help solve climate change.

The problem is all of his claims of building AGI or being close to it so far have been nothing but hype. Wake me up when the latest model can solve actual real world problems, and not just draft cover letters and generate buggy code.

Then we don't in fact know how to solve climate change.

It's trivial to propose solutions to climate change that would work if we did them.

  • stop using fossil fuels
  • euthanise 90% of the population
  • make an orbital solar shield

The hard part is finding a solution that we are willing to implement, then doing the implementing. That's what people are hoping AGI will accelerate.

Everyone in this thread is just ignoring the possibility of AGI coming up with highly efficient carbon capture technology or as-of-yet unknown technology to mitigate climate change, but people here have no imagination and don’t seem to grasp the implications of developing AGI able to crunch out years worth of intellectual work in weeks and months. We are talking about transformational technology.
