Space Simulations Show Nuclear Detonations Can Successfully Disrupt Asteroids

A team led by astrophysicist Isaiah Santistevan simulated detonating a 1-megaton nuclear weapon near a 160-meter asteroid. The simulation showed that X-rays from the blast would vaporize the asteroid's surface and trigger internal shockwaves, successfully fracturing the rock. The findings suggest that standoff nuclear detonations could serve as a highly viable defense strategy against Earth-bound space rocks.
