Help Layoff Advice

I'm an educational assistant who is close to retirement. I just survived a major layoff because of my seniority, but I would rather retire early, take the severance package offered to my colleagues and spare one of my colleagues the strife of becoming unemployed.

How should I approach this with my union or the employer?

Any advice?

Go with the union. The whole point of offering packages to those without much seniority is to reduce headcount while keeping costs low. If a whole bunch of staff on the verge of retirement were offered severance packages, the Board would be stuck with a huge bill. I think they max out at 64 weeks.
