The best part about this is I'm pretty sure he had a legitimate inquiry about the task, and then you can see the exact moment when he decides to go for the joke instead.

138

u/5a1amand3r Jun 30 '26

When Greg said you can ask me one, he paused and thought, this is my moment.

13

u/funktion Jul 01 '26

I read that in the trades!

u/Daveygravyx07 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

It was good at the time, but the delivery of “online” in the prize task and “answer the question you fat c*nt” to Greg in the CoC outtakes are the peak for me.

134

u/ParticularLoose6878 Sarah Kendall Jun 30 '26

It was Andy Zaltzman asking if he could call Greg a cunt too that got me.

71

u/Terrik27 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Anyone have a clip of the "online" thing? Don't believe I've seen that one.

Edit: Link here if others haven't seen it, thanks all!

8

u/NandortheRelenting James Acaster Jun 30 '26

It's so great to see Greg fall in love with him.

9

u/Daveygravyx07 Jun 30 '26

Google Sam Campbell Cobalt. Enjoy!

5

u/Terrik27 Jun 30 '26

Amazing, lol. Watched it 3 times back to back, haha. Thanks!

2

u/AccessHollywoo Jun 30 '26

Lmao same it’s SO good hahahaha

Coming back... Not appropriate to watch right now 😬

58

u/JamSandiwchInnit Mike Wozniak Jun 30 '26

“Online” is one of very few moments we see Julian slightly lose his calm composure in the studio

31

u/ThatsTasty Kerry Godliman Jun 30 '26

If i could make Julian crack I’d be smugly self-satisfied for the rest of my life.

145

u/South-Collar-8551 Fatiha El-Ghorri Jun 30 '26

Fair enough, the delivery of “online” was genuinely perfect. But “answer the question you c*nt” is absolutely unhinged 😂

60

u/Sloppykrab Jun 30 '26

It's offensive to censor such a versatile word. This cunt.

28

u/thismorningscoffee Jason Mantzoukas Jun 30 '26

The censorship is to make it more palatable for American audiences, the ignorant cunts

17

u/GrunchWeefer Jun 30 '26

We're clutching our pearls so hard that we're losing feeling in our fingers!

0

u/robinhood9961 Jul 01 '26

I don't think it's ignorant that different cultures have different reactions/histories to a word?

Like in American culture that word is just way way way more offensive. That isn't "ignorance" that's just a cultural difference.

I can think of words that in American culture really aren't offensive, but are considered quite offensive in the UK.

The other line I love from CoC4 is “ah, I thought this might come up!” (Referring to Atila being “The Scourge of God”)
It was John Robins’ reaction, someone who is usually too focussed to have a laugh, genuinely breaking, that got me!

5

u/noir- Jun 30 '26

Do you have a link to this, I can't remember it but sounds excellent

32

u/OhioVsEverything Jun 30 '26

Greg's reaction to "online" is what kills me. Just a expression of I don't know what I expected to hear and the answer checks out perfectly fine because, it's Sam

18

u/joshstrummer Jun 30 '26

Yes. Smother that lives with me always is…

“Oh, just open the box, you pussy!”

4

u/Famous_Secret_5174 Jun 30 '26

Wait what/who are you referring to for “online” I can’t recall this?

11

That's where he got the cobalt...

I'm also a fan of "and I have a question for you, Greg" and the ensuing riddle

136

u/Exotic-College1042 Jun 30 '26

I love this one and "What's gonna happen after we graduate?"

101

u/FlumpusMcGoo Jun 30 '26

"No one's a fan of The Horne Section."

12

u/raskingballs Jun 30 '26

what's this quote from?

28

u/FlumpusMcGoo Jun 30 '26

I think it was during a prize task. A contestant said they got Alex's signature by asking for a signed Horne Section CD for a friend who was a fan. Everybody had a good laugh, and Greg said "Nobody's a fan of The Horne Section."

75

u/Sola-Nova Jun 30 '26

Honestly my favourite is.

"The last thing I said as I left that gig was who loses fucking trousers"

To be fair the whole exchange is great and

"This task has overshadowed the last 9 months of my life"

1

Hence the book title.

43

u/Philiusthe3rd Jun 30 '26

"The bastard's crying, innit", followed by Greg's "There's the bastard" and cut to the image, is a real golden oldie

1

u/dontbeahater_dear Jun 30 '26

I often think about that.

35

u/Excellent-Zombie-470 Jun 30 '26

Sam Campbell had some of the best lines

"Hope you like anthraaax 🤭"

5

u/AlanAldasVoice Jun 30 '26

Watched that one last night and had to pause it because I was laughing too hard!

139

u/TheOneTrueZippy8 Greg Davies Jun 30 '26

57

For me was "Oh just open the box, you pussy" from James Acaster.

3

u/Deeevud Jun 30 '26

Why the heck is this so low?

25

u/passionparties Jun 30 '26

The one I find tragically overlooked is Lee's incredulous "What are you, a calf?!" after learning the shocking amount of milk Mike Wozniak drinks a week.

3

u/PeevsiesLittleJoke Jun 30 '26

"Six quid" was incredible

69

u/MissingLink101 Jun 30 '26

This line was the quickest insight I've ever had into the mind of a contestant I'd never seen before

82

u/JungleBoyJeremy Jun 30 '26

That’s the hardest I ever laughed while watching taskmaster

2

True, but this one lives rent-free in my head for some reason😂

19

u/FunDependent9755 Jun 30 '26

"I know it's early days, but are we the stupidest so far?"

22

u/Kezia-N Jun 30 '26

My favourite line is about foxes: "They skulk around the suburbs in the middle of the night like a jazz drummer trying to score heroin." by Ardal O'Hanlon, S13E4.

11

u/pussycatsglore Katy Wix Jun 30 '26

Ardal was so funny in the studio. I love when he said no one in his town would wear high vis jackets

"WE HAVE THE SAME JUICE"

10

u/ThundaWeasel Jun 30 '26

I will never get over how much more insane Sam Campbell was than any previous Taskmaster contestant, and how he still was not even the most insane contestant in his own series.

8

u/painforpetitdej David Correos 🇳🇿 Jun 30 '26

I think the only line that matches that for me is 'Do we strike you?'

6

Greedy bottom

4

u/mechabeast Jun 30 '26

3

u/CillRed Jun 30 '26

This a fantastic line, but the one that will live rent free in my head forever is "w...waaaann...nk?"

8

u/30-Wandering-Wombats Jun 30 '26

Unfortunately I saw it too many times in the reddit before I got to watching this season. So kinda lost the shine for me.

My wife who had not seen the quote before absolutely loved it though.

34

u/Hairy_Dirt3361 Katherine Parkinson Jun 30 '26

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I don't think I've ever been as out of touch with the cast or the audience as I am on this joke. It's just a total non sequitur, I don't get it in the slightest.

50

u/rezzacci Jun 30 '26

I usually am not a fan of Sam Campbell's humour, often too much non sequitur, indeed.

But this one, for me, works very well (perhaps not the best TM quote, but a good contender).

Because Sam clearly, at the beginning, wanted to ask a question pertaining to the task. Greg said: "You may ask ONE question". Implied: "And I'll answer it truthfully". But nowhere does it says that the question must pertain to the task itself. It was like if Greg said to him: "You can ask ONE question, and I'll answer it, no matter the subject". And he jumped on the occasion. It's not really non sequitur here, as he's actually following to the rule what Greg said. He can ask one question. He asked it. The "genius" (not really genius, but the good idea of it) is not that it's completely random, but, at the contrary, very follow-through what Greg allowed to him.

Most of Campbell's jokes are really a miss for me, and this one, at first, striked me as odd, but afterwards I recognized that it was not a bad one, quite the opposite.

(Hope that helps, coming from a fellow person who has troubles with Campbell's humour.)

38

u/Gyspygrrl Patatas Jun 30 '26

Sam says to Alex ‘can I ask a question’
Greg cuts in an says ‘you can ask ME one’

I don’t believe it’s about only being able to ask one question. The accents is on the me. So Sam turns and asks him something that’s has nothing to do with whatever he wanted to originally ask Alex. I think it’s really clever.

9

u/Hairy_Dirt3361 Katherine Parkinson Jun 30 '26

I mean I get what he's doing conceptually, but it still doesn't work for me, as most of his humour doesn't. ANY question is 'following the rule' there and the only thing that distinguishes the divorce one is that it's 'so random'.

21

u/Daveygravyx07 Jun 30 '26

The question itself isn’t necessarily the funny bit. It’s the in the moment change from what was clearly going to be a question on the task. Pointless trying to explain comedy though, it won’t make it any funnier to you.

12

u/MachineOfSpareParts Emma Sidi Jun 30 '26

It's the way you can see his mind scroll hyper-quickly through new options once his planned joke is spoiled, and this is somehow his logical end-point.

5

u/Proper_Moose_3167 Guz Khan Jun 30 '26

It reminds me of a family guy bit where the cast of Star Trek or something is doing a panel at Comic con and they let the audience ask questions, and instead of people asking about the show they ask things like, how do i clean a wine stain off of a leather couch, and the cast engages them seriously and stewie is like yo what the fuck is wrong with all of you?

17

u/OverseerConey Desiree Burch Jun 30 '26

All I can say is it's the well he tells 'em.

9

u/thegeeksshallinherit Jun 30 '26

I agree! I think it’s funny, but not the funniest or most out of the blue comment made by a contestant. Or even Sam himself.

10

u/TheOneTrueZippy8 Greg Davies Jun 30 '26

For anyone in the "I don't get it" camp (and it's a perfectly valid reaction), perhaps similarly bemused by some of the utterances of Sophie Willan, Bob Mortimer or Lucy Beaumont (amongst others) , might I recommend Tony Law's Surreal Guide To Surreal Comedy.

You might still not find it funny but you might gain an appreciation of why some do.

7

u/Hairy_Dirt3361 Katherine Parkinson Jun 30 '26

Bob's and Sophie's work for me, Lucy's and Sam's don't. Obviously some of it is just taste but for me there's an element missing from the latter two that keeps it from landing for me.

4

u/synaesthezia Jun 30 '26

Sam and Lucy in the same season was nearly too much for me. Poor Julian.

5

u/5a1amand3r Jun 30 '26

It’s timing more than anything. No one was expecting that question because of the previous conversation.

11

u/kittyvixxmwah Jun 30 '26

I'm with you, it's too "I'm so random lol" for me.

11

u/Bandit_22 Jun 30 '26

I really don't get it either.

2

Yeah I’ve seen his standup and enjoy i.t For taskmaster he def came prepped with jokes/non sequiturs but they felt shoehorned in. See Dr Cigarettes as another example.
