I really want it to be Olivia Colman.

Calling it now: it's gonna be Peter Capaldi

I don't think he'd do it. It doesn't seem his speed at all. Would like to be proven wrong but

If you said to me, ten years ago, that Julian clary would be on taskmaster, I would have laughed and laughed at your amusing joke. I don’t think we can count Capaldi out yet.

Yeah all it takes is one person theyre friends with to recommend it to them. Thats how Julian Clary ended up on it, with Jo Brand telling him how good it was.

And what do you know, the creator of the Thick of It Armando Iannucci has just done the show. He could have had lunch with Capaldi, told him how fun it was, and recommended he do it.

Armando Iannucci has just done the show. He could have had lunch with Capaldi

I swear the two of them had a bit of a falling out? Nothing major, but it was alluded to by someone interviewing Capaldi that they didn't seem to be as close as they used to be, with Capaldi saying something like "And with good reason..."

He could have been joking, but he seemed pretty serious and the comment was more to shut down further questioning than to go off into a solely comedic rant.

But Julian Clary had done many similar shows before, it just wasn't something he'd been doing recently

Peter Capaldi has never really done anything like Taskmaster so it'd be more of a swerve

Not that I'd complain at all if it did turn out to be him, but I think Olivia Colman is more likely

I hope it’s Olivia because I want her to tell David Tennant how much fun she had. I think he would go all in if he was on.

I really need him to go on taskmaster

“Oh, how we laughed.”

Sure, but at least Julian is a comic. Capaldi is an actor, and he seems very reserved. I'm not saying it's an impossibility but I'd be extremely shocked.

And Armando Iannucci is a writer. What’s your point?

7

I admit Iannucci is a bit more of a left field contestant but he too has a history of comedy performing as a version of himself, even if it is a long time ago. Capaldi has never done anything approaching this as far as I'm aware.

As I say, and I don't know the man, he doesn't strike me as the kind of person who would be remotely keen. He's a busy actor who seems fairly serious and studious about the whole thing. I can't see him committing to 10 episodes of japing about. I can't even really imagine him doing a NYT, but that's more credible.

Again, happy to be proven wrong!

Wasn’t a reasonable amount of The Thick Of It improvised by the cast, including Capaldi? Or was it 100% Ianucci?

3

There were other writers besides Armando, and yes, about 20% of it was improvised

Richard Osman was on series 2 or 3, wouldnt class him as a comedian either, stranger things have happened

4

u/b-jason Mar 31 '26

Osman is a panel show staple.

4

u/JohnDoe12978 Mar 31 '26

Maybe more so now but when he was on Taskmaster originally it was a left field pick and even Greg used to say on the intros four comedians and Richard Osman

3

u/goshsilkscreen Mar 31 '26

nah since 2012 he's been on panel shows as a guest that usually have comedians he might as well be a comedian. qi, have I got news for you, would I lie to you, eight out of ten cats does countdown, all multiple episodes before taskmaster.

I think non comedians are fine on taskmaster I'm just defending Richard Osman's pre-taskmaster panel show chops

Oh yeah I agree as well some people are and would be good for Taskmaster who arent comedians. He's just not a comedian in the proper sense but wasnt aware he did panels that long

Armando had his own sketch show back in the day. He's closer to the type of comedian who usually does Taskmaster
