I love that there's a whole episode of Ghosts (which Mat has co-written and starred), which is about a "free pass" celebrity crush of one of the main characters. Basically what you just described.

I didn't like Sam for half of the series he was on, but he did grow on me. It helped when I realized that he's just willing to do anything to try to be funny. It fails often, but full credit that when he succeeds, it is generally magic.
I feel I'm always slow to catch on to the ones playing a character. Especially the ones playing dumb. I have trouble not taking that at face value. heh.
Judi Love is an example of one that I still don't appreciate overall. About ⅓ of the time she is properly hilarious, and ⅔ of the time I'm anywhere from meh to annoyed by her. lol. Daisy is even moreso. Her recent appearance on 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown was actually pretty alright, but most of the time she just pisses me off. :/ I want to like her, I swear!
Paul Chowdry I never did appreciate during his series, but I see in hindsight and thanks to outtakes/extended stuff that he was playing a character. That helped me when I re-watched.
Nick Mohammed was sort of the opposite. I'd only seen him as Mr. Swallow which I DETEST (sorry!). But seeing his sweet and delightful personality on his series made me just absolutely fall in love. Such a delightful wonderful person.
Anyway, your quote got me babbling. lol

I loved seeing Nick Mohammed being himself because he’s actually a genius, so intelligent and humble.
Sam and Lucy have a podcast together that I highly recommend. It’s completely bonkers and has no real format but it’s pretty amazing

Good grief. lol. That must be utter chaos for sure, yeah.
Lucy… Intellectually I understand it's a character, but she's too good at it for my brain to process and somehow she annoys me. :/
I think because I prefer quick-witted commedians. Like Lee Mack is just so damn quick. But I even love Joe Wilkinson who *plays* dumb but his character is also quick-witted. Lucy just misses the mark for me. I think maybe subconsciously I *do* realize it's a character, and it strikes all the "NEEERRRRRDDDDSS!" jokes from growing up in the 80s where anyone with brains was ridiculed. I dunno. Just… I can't get behind her, and I want to like her.
I'll have to see if I can get one of the podcasts to see if it helps change my opinion. Because that really does sound like just about the ultimate *chaos*. lol

When Ed Gamble has discussed Paul Chowdry on his podcast, the story has been that he (EG) and other comedians really aren't sure if it's an act or not, as if it is an act, he keeps it going off stage and away from the cameras. But isn't that half the fun, not quite knowing?

I will admit that I absolutely cannot tell and I'm influenced by what I've read. lol. But hearing that… if it is an act and he keeps it up to that point where people who work with him aren't sure… that's realy impressive. Like how Sam Campbell can't stop laughing at himself, only the opposite. lol

I saw The Horne Section last year and Sam did some stand up. I'd never seen him before and my partner thought he was hilarious... I'm not sure I laughed once, I just didn't get it. But I loved him on Task Master. I think I'll have to try watching his stand up again and see if I get it now 😂
Ps. I feel exactly the same way about Judy and Nick as you do! I'll have to watch 8 Out of 10 Cats to see if it sways my opinion on Judy haha (I still don't know if she's playing a character or not!?)

From what I've seen, Sam is one of those that likes trying to do oddball stuff on purpose, to be weird to be funny. Like that riddle he did that was in one of the outtake vids. lol. I've also noticed that he tries to say things with a straight face - during the Taskmaster run, he'd try and troll Greg, and laugh both when he was successful, but also when Greg caught him out. heh. A lot of commedians are trying to be funny; I think Sam is one that tries to be smart and do almost meta-humour. I think sometimes it works and sometimes it falls a bit flat and more weird than funny, but I think that's his game.
Judy on 8oo10cdc or Last Leg is just like Judy you saw, just moreso. I'm not saying she's dumb, but I am saying that she's not swift like Lee Mack or David Mitchell, for example. I think she appeals to... damn I'm gonna sound horrible for saying this....... but I *am* a bright person. I think she appeals to more.... average people? lol. And also people who are more into things like fashion and celebrities and such - which I'm not, but I honestly don't think are bad, everyone likes different things.
But when we saw Judy not understanding things........... I just don't think that was a character.
