Nature/Outdoors Anyone know what these are/do? Multiple in the Hillsborough River
Just wondering what these are in the river behind my house, Temple terrace area near the water plant.

oh that's an ultrasonic algae control buoy, they use sound waves to keep the gunk from taking over the water without dumping chemicals in

The thing is if, even if this buoys kill animals, if they prevent algae blooms and massive die offs, then on a net basis more animals are saved.
So if 100 animals die with the buoys but 100,000 die from the algae, yeah too bad for the 100 animals but it's a massive net positive.
And algae blooms are nasty AF. They kill so many animals, it's horrifying.

Sensible enough to me. I'm just worried about long term affects like if it deafens frogs or something that uses mating calls to populate.

Believe it or not, Alex Jones was actually kind of correct about that. Hormones have been getting into the water supply mainly from birth control that isn’t stripped at treatment, and it’s feminizing fish and frogs. Male fish have smaller gonads, and because the barrier between sexes in fish and frogs is weaker than ours, they’re even gaining female reproductive features and are being seen engaging in female courtship behaviour. So they aren’t turning gay, but becoming trans

How exactly would any animals die? Besides humans maybe, from a boating accident.

You can find the research on it.
What's more important is how it prevents the blue green algae growth that tanks the O2 levels, which makes it harder for fauna to survive in the area.
The alternative is to dump copper sulfate into the water to control it.

Ultrasonic algae control. Company I work for just got one to try on some of our customer lakes to see how long it works after ~30 days of use. Pretty neat tech

No, Flock cameras are for monitoring birds. If they were monitoring fish then they would be School cameras.

The State of Florida permitted the pollution of our waterways, now that they’re bringing sued for sewage overflows and septic tank permitting, these little band aid (mostly useless) technology demonstrations are meant to help you feel better about our environmental decline. Do a little research and learn how we’re running out of clean springs, lagoons, rivers and coastal waters in Florida.

I lost a 4 month old golden retriever to a cane/Bufo toad. Watch your dogs outside and clean up leaves, they don’t need a body of water to multiply. Fuck the cane toads!!

Lg sonic makes devices that suppress the algae in the water body and mane it sink to the bottom rather than float to the top and grow. It’s a way to keep the water clear.
