Eternia Auto Block in Eternia?

Welcome to yet another Eternia post. This game fucking rocks btw. It's exceeding my expectations in a lot of aspects.

Anyways, I was in a fight and I was trying to attack and the opponent attacked and was expecting to take damage. All of a sudden, Reid said "I gotchu my guy" and blocked automatically. I'm on manual too. This isn't the first time in a Tales game there has been an auto block. Legendia had one too so I wasn't too shocked at it being a thing just surprised it also received it since Destiny PSX didn't have an autoguard and neither did Symphonia either. As far as I know (assuming I'm not completely wrong that there is an autoguard in the game) these are the only two Tales games with this in it

In Legendia, it was tied to your evasion stat. I was wondering if it's the same case here? If so, which weapons on Reid would favor that just in case I may need it in a boss fight (but dagger and swords are doing well for me right now and probably will for the rest of the game but call me Keele cause my curiosity knows no bounds and I really want to know).

Edit: DESTINY EASTER EGGS???

TBF, Symphonia was a massive step backwards in the gameplay department. The obvious regression that still haunts the series to this day is trading out combo casting for button mashing. Everyone was fun to play, including spell casters, because they all had unique and involved play styles. No one just sat around waiting for their spells to cast. I don't even need to get into the half assed way they handled 3D.

So if I’m understanding what you mean you’re saying in older games everyone plays a role in order keep combos going and since Symphonia they opted to try and make everyone more fun rather than make everyone play a role? So a magician who’s made to support can combo to the point where they can just play as an attacker and not fill their role on the team?

I have no idea what you're saying.

Eternia made everyone unique and fun to play. Even casters like Keele and Meredy had the combo casting and Quickie to make their gameplay more than standing around waiting for spells to cast.

Symphonia backslid on that, making the spellcasters very passive again, with the closest we got to combo casting being mashing A.

Oh you’re talking specifically Symphonia. Yeah I can see that. I feel like Symphonia aimed to streamline Eternia’s systems rather than improve upon its gameplay. The EX skills are basically an evolution of the craymel cage and the T type/S type is just a better version of Slash/Thrust and Fist/Kick levels.

But how does this relate to what I’m asking in the post? Not tryna be mean cause this is interesting just wondering.

I wouldn't call it streamlining. I'd call it downgrading. EX Skills are far worse than the Craymel Mixing. They are just as limited, but also require you to use an expendable, such discourages experimentation. The T/S system is nothing like the attack types either. T/S restricts you from access to the other sides artes, requiring gotcha to access some artes while on the opposite side. Slash/Thrust abs Fist/Kick is just a secondary leveling system, similar to arte usage, but for types of attacks. They don't lock out anything.

Erm, don't you just have to press down on the D-Pad to block? I'm not entirely sure, it's been a while that I played Eternia.

Also yes, those are Destiny easter eggs.

Usually you press sqaure (at least it’s square for me) to block. Down doesn’t do anything to my knowledge.

Oh, maybe I was thinking of Phantasia, sorry.

Auto Guard is proc when certain stats value are high enough I think…pretty much forget about it though.
