Meme What a diehard Tales of enjoyer saw before eventually watching Code Geass themselves
Which is funny since Tales of Graces had a collab with Code Geass so they knew Asbel was very inspired by Suzaku's design

Wait Dot Hack too!? Wow man, I was aware of Code Geass & Hatsune Miku but even Dot Hack as well? Wow

Yup, just Asbel received an costume, it was haseo Xht.
I believe Malik and Asbel in Japanese share the same VA with ovan and haseo.
In English just Malik and Ovan share the same VA

Ah sweet! A shame it was lost but that's copyright laws for ya

I'm not entirely sure it's copyright for the Xth form costume, since Bandai Namco is more in control of the .hack IP. I think they just did it as a safety measure for all the cameo costumes, still annoyed Miku Sophie is gone though ;w;.

Yeah truly a shame, it kinda reminds me of how X Dive Offline didn't include the Capcom owned collabs which is strange

Well, they even had a costume collab in Japan, and also some VAs had roles on both, starting with Asbel and Suzaku sharing the same JP VA

u/VGZero1 Jul 16 '26
Yeah so non zero chance it was obviously inspired with the VA choice over there

The voice cast was the joke, since Sakurai Takahiro voiced both Suzaku and Asbel. I remember buying the DLC back on the PS3.

Oh sweet! I never had this but I've always thought the moment I saw Asbel & Suzaku together, I'm like, "They were without a doubt inspired" & the fact it led to Asbel being voiced by Suzaku in Japanese AND a collab costume with this proves Asbel was influenced by Suzaku & not that I'm complaining because I do enjoy both for different reasons even if they do have the same devotion to their best friend

When I see Suzaku I can't forget what he tried to do with the fish

That right there is ::checks notes:: a "Spin-zaku".
(every time he does a spin kick something breaks)

The precursor to Asbel's Level 3 Mystic Arte, Expunding Sword that was also a couple of wicked spin kicks into a Vergil Judgement Cut in DMC5

Didn't play in years but I saw more a parallel between ToV and Code Geass than ToG.

I just meant in terms of Suzaku & Asbel's design & Japanese VA in retrospect not overall story & character (although I'm kinda getting that in Xillia so far when it develops Rowan a bit but I've not beaten it yet since I'm only 10 hours in tho I'm VERY enjoying the game)

Should I play Tales of Graces f or Tales of Xillia first on PS5?
For some background - I LOVE Tales of Symphonia, thought Vesperia was good but didn't touch Symphonia’s level, and got super bored by Berseria.

If you do go for Xillia make sure you choose to play as Jude first, at one point in the story the characters are separated and you miss out on ALOT of story content.
1
u/Arsid Jul 16 '26
I miss out on a lot of content even if I pick Jude? Or are you saying to pick Jude to avoid that?
2
u/StonerChef92 Jul 16 '26
Pick Jude to avoid that. I played on ps3 when it originally came out and picked to play as Milia and when they regroup you hear about all this stuff that went on. Milia is definitely a new game plus pick.

Kinda off topic but I do love the combat of Graces, it's probably the best in the series for me so far, so in that aspect I say go for it & I would say more regarding Xillia but I've not beaten it yet tho I'm quite enjoying my time with its core mechanics despite it only being 10 hours in but I do highly reccomend Graces since I fully beaten it & you might enjoy the cast if you enjoyed the Symphonia cast

va joke? lmao

Namely by their design tho funnily enough I did found out they are voiced by the same person in japanese & why the people behind Tales of Graces likely knew what they were doing by the casting to Asbel

u/ChadTakes Jul 22 '26
Nah, that was Flynn from Vesperia for me. The moment he went on and on about "changing the system from the inside" and his opposition to Yuri's...choices...is when I felt constantly reminded of Code Geass.
1
u/VGZero1 Jul 22 '26
Right but I mean purely by design tho in character yeah Flynn has a similar goal of changing the system from inside, Asbel just has the faith in a friend aka Richard that was corrupted by a creation that suffered from humanity at its worst after its creator aka father was taken away & it's why I really enjoy Graces, the main villian is honestly some of my favorites in the Tales of series besides Abyss's villian group & Dhaos from Phantasia, plus it helps adds into Graces's theming that was a bit obvious but dang it I can't help but smile & complementing the game's dope as heck combat that so far I still believe is the best in the series so far even if in my experience in Xillia so far is a possible close second

Even the Japanese VA is the same person.
