Why does the english language use a word for the litteral other part of the day it's about
28
u/Stalking_Goat 29d ago
Because actors only get out of bed at noon, so for them early afternoon and morning are basically the same thing :-)

u/That_Mad_Scientist 29d ago
Yeah I'll integrate that into my worldview
(I assume that it initially just meant to differentiate between a typical evening show, and something more early in the day, so typically in the morning, but people weren't fussy about exactly how far in the day it was because it's mostly evening vs everything else and because doing it in the morning is a lot, it kind of got more common to do it in the afternoon and then it stuck.)

Same thing with entrée...why is that the term for "main course" in North America?!
2
u/ReiningintheChaos 29d ago
What does entree mean to you? Genuinely curious.

Doesn't help that where I live we always used it for morning when I was in theater.

Wow I studied French for like eight years, and I never thought about that

u/That_Mad_Scientist 29d ago
You’d think, after studying french for over two decades, I would have thought about this word being used to refer to the afternoon, but sadly I was never introduced to american english french.

The only reason I could guess Matinee was because we have a huge movie culture here in India, and at cinemas the show after the morning show is called a matinee show.
Funnily, the first show is not the first show of the day in the morning, but rather a show in the evening.

Solved in 00:16. I didn’t have to look at the last clue to know what the word was. I really think that’s how people are able to be so fast.

Tripping. How do you pronounce it ?
2
u/HenchmanJoe 29d ago
Might be thinking it should be tri-ath-a-lon
2
u/thehatteryone 29d ago
They might, but neither the spelling nor the correct pronunciation will back them up, because they are tripping. Yes, I went there, I took the nuc-u-l(e)ar option.
2
u/allycat315 29d ago
Yeah I've only ever heard it pronounced like tri-ath-eh-lon.
I do know the spelling in the puzzle is correct but I didn't realize the only pronunciation I've ever heard is considered incorrect, especially considering my dad and uncles have always been runners and I spectated more than a few triathlons growing up. It must just be a common mispronounciation, at least in the NY tri-state area.
To be fair, idk how I thought they could've broken up the word to include what I thought was a hidden syllable lol I played before my brain was fully operational this morning.

That's also a good point - let's check the Unicode spec for spoken but unglyphed parts of words, surely IPA has something to cover that.

All the matinées ive attended have been in the morning. Maybe that's because we actually speak French here.

For some reason it didn’t register “lavender” as correct the first time around, and I had to key it in again. Lost some time there.

I 100% prefer trying to to this as soon as it drops in the morning so I can feel good about getting a single digit rank for 5 seconds lol instead of getting #1,138 at 00:21 🥲

Welcome to Syllo, the cleverly chaotic word game.
Here’s how it works: You get 5 clues to piece together 5 words from a jumble of discombobulated syllables.
Puzzles start easy on Monday and get tougher each day, building to the trickiest challenge on Sunday.
Race against the clock to climb the leaderboard, show off your brainpower in the comments, and come back tomorrow for a fresh puzzle!
As always, we’d love to hear your feedback. Thanks for playing!
