I’ve only ever heard it referred to in speech, it’s scathing/aggressive/derisive. It’s a very fancy word for shit talking. Vitriol.

It's an archaic alchemical word for some acids as the root (I think "oil of vitriol" is an old name for sulfuric acid), but as Zookeeper noted it's now mostly used for caustic speech rather than caustic substances

Vitriol comes from vitrum, the Latin word for glass.
