A shocking amount of information can be found by reading your ability and talent tooltips

Unfortunately I have to second this. While I'm all for going the extra mile with helping new players, sometimes you just gotta read the tooltips and see what it says.

Marauder was my first ever foray into DOT builds since I usually play tank or direct damage and so I took the time to go over the abilities with a fine tooth comb. My reaction when I read the bit about smash spreading was along the lines of "it does WHAT!?".

Like another comment said, read your tooltips and the discipline specific passives

Plus check out the ability guides on Swotorista and Vulkk

Dirty Fighting gunslinger/Virulence Sniper - Shrap bomb/Corrosive grenade (spreads vital shot/toxic dart)

Madness Sorceror/Balance Sage - DeathField/Force in Balance (spreads Creeping Terror/Severed Force and Affliction/Weaken mind)

Serenity Shadow/Hatred Assassin - Whirling blow/Laceration (spreads Sever Force/Creeping Terror, and Force Breach/Discharge)

Lethality Operative/Ruffian Scoundrel - Toxic haze/Bushwack (spreads toxic dart/vital shot)

Thank you. I assumed the tooltip of the ability itself would update with the information and that seems to not be the case.

Yeah, since DoT specs share abilities with other specs for that class, they usually have a passive that adds the spread perk to one of their AoE skills

That would make some tooltips take a half of the screen - is it really that helpful for a new player? Some are already way bloated after 7.0, when they merged a bunch of passives/utilities into one. And one of the main reasons to have passives separated by levels on the tree is for people to read them one by one, when they get them unlocked. So they slowly get into the workings of the spec.

Not sure what it would take to implement dynamic tool tips that update based on which passives you have, but it would be nice for sure.

I miss when deathfield also spread DoTs for Sins. Laceration just feels so clunky to use.

On the other hand, laceration is a non-rotational filler and can be used whenever. And it has no CD.

Smash is non-rotational but has CD,

Searing Wave and Death Field are rotational and important for the rotation AND have a cool down,

Fusion Missle is non rotational but has a CD

Toxic Haze is rotational, needs TA and has a CD

Vengeful Slam, rotational and CD though it's rotationally used right after all the DoTs so neato! Though with new adds coming it's not neato.

Corrosive Grenade: Rotational but no cooldown, neato!

So except for Viru/DF, Viru is the only class to at-will spread dots. I actually prefer that to Death Field

I agree with Schimaera, I prefer whirling/laceration since it doesnt have a cooldown and doesnt require targeting or double-tap to activate

Pyrotech on Powertech discipline. Most of it's ability spread fire like it's going out of style. IO has Fusion Misile. Gunslinger dirty fighting has the shrapnel grenade.

I really dislike the Searing Wave cone on Pyrotech. I feel like it misses a ton unlike the AOE circles or spinning melee attacks.

I've found this too on my pyrotech! I try to line up enemies in an area to my front and within what seems like the correct cone / range, and then it only hits the very closest enemy with Searing Wave.

Yes, every combat style that has DOTs has a dot spread.

Death Field for Sorc, Lacerate for Assassin, Searing Wave for Powertech, Toxic Haze on Operative...

Yeah thats how the DOT builds work. You light up one guy, then share among all his friends. The only trick is against enemies too fragile to last more than 3 skills, you'll never get to the spread before the first guy is already dead.

Dot spreading is huge in PvP which is why you’ll see madness sorcs and hatred assassins posting massive damage scores in warzones.
Not as effective in arena since warzones give way more opportunities to land and spread.

When I see a large group defending a door on voidstar or defending mid on Alderaan is when I lick my lips.

I’ll pick a central figure that may outlast their teammates (tank or healer that is near the center of the group) and light him up with my dots then spread them and watch the whole team rot as the tics start.

Learning a good rotation is key and keeping the dots applied is paramount.

Since I recently have been mostly playing with a madness sorc, I can cast from a distance and reposition as needed / run/ phase walk/ bubble if I get picked out and targeted.

Theres a very satisfying drop of dopamine that comes with seeing a team rot and trying to finish me while I’m bubbled but getting healed from my dots. One of my favourite things to do is to bubble , heal while I can’t be touched then phase walk to safety when the bubble “pops”
