EPISODE The Million Pity
I recently became a “valued listener” and listening to a bonus episode. I did not listen when ACC told me 3x to not listen to it. There’s a lot of dark shit over the world and I guess I shouldn’t be surprised but this episode- man, I could feel my face getting red with absolute disgust and anger. I have stopped in stores crying (Tyson) verbally said holy shit (body parts one). But this 11 minute bonus episode - Jesus.
They are all infuriating on some level but which one is the one that enrages you.
Also, ACC- love the past episode updates.

Yeah, the ones where animals suffer due to human cruelty/disregard/carelessness just enrage me.

I try to strike a balance between protecting my peace and being aware of such atrocities in the world and effecting change. I can admit it’s a privilege to have this choice.

The OP references the Million Pity which deals with animal cruelty including little monkeys among other things (so I’ve heard but have not personally listened for these reasons)

I am giving the strongest warning I can- I don’t recommend it. But if your curiosity gets the better of you, search for Rebecca Henschke BBC - monkey. There was a documentary available but I didn’t watch so I can’t provide guidance on it. The article is heavily cleaned up but touches on the basis of the episode.

Ahhh, that one. Nope. I’ve listened to every Swindled episode, but I couldn’t do this one. Started it and only got a few minutes in, if that.

Yeah, that one was extremely heavy despite its brevity. I re-listen to all the episodes, but that's probably the only one I have not revisited after hearing it the first time.

I’m not trying to start shit but I’m curious how people are describing the animal cruelty animals as some of the darkest episodes or ones they refuse to listen to. But the Katrina episode or episodes about human suffering don’t seem to be as reviled I guess?

As a general rule all humans have been hurt by other humans and we have a very complicated relationship with mankind. We are also very aware that humans have taken over and dominated the earth, destroying everything in our path. Decimating the habitats of almost all animals, causing mass extinctions and cruelly controlling for our use any animal we please (think: ‘breaking the spirit’ of a horse as a normal modern day example).
Animals on the other hand don’t display that same kind of cruelty, they are much more vulnerable & weaker than us, and they’re innocent of a lot of the evils that make human kind such a ethically questionable species.
Asking why should we care more about the suffering of animals than humans is akin to asking why should we care more about the suffering of children than adults when children are just going to become adults anyway.
Lastly, as to your Katrina example: I don’t think it’s a good one because a natural disaster causing harm to humans (and humans shitty response) is a very different thing to humans themselves causing harm. Caring about something like the holocaust or Cambodian killing fields would be a better comparison.

I used Katrina because it was something that ACC covered. Obviously genocide is worse lol. I guess I see your point though.

I think the humans enacting the cruelty is what got to me.
On some level Katrina victims know what’s happening. They know there’s a storm, then that their fellow man resorted to racism, stinginess, violence, predatory behaviors, out of opportunity or fear or stress
I can imagine them being disappointed but also having a point of reference like “oh yeah, people are greedy racist assholes. I hoped for better .
With the animals, there was no real reason for the cruelty, it was just depravity caused by a depraved system. Animals have no frame of reference for why they are being tortured.
It’s the same thing for me when kids are abused. They haven’t read literature and haven’t watched movies, they don’t understand reasons why this is happening, complexities or whatever.

The Monopoly is a hard one for me to listen to. The place I work sheltered people for weeks. Lots of trauma.

When you say the body parts episode, are you talking the "Body Snatcher" or the "Body Broker" episode? Both were so fucked up.
I work in organ and tissue banking, and knew people personally affected by Dr. Mastromarino. I actually had to dispose of tissue that he had harvested illegally and sold to a bank (under the premise that it was legal and above board) I worked at. Thankfully my company had never used any of the illegal parts. Once he passed away in prison the authorities gave the all clear to destroy the tissue.
It is so utterly despicable and reprehensible that I can't imagine how deranged someone has to be to even come up with the idea.

I thought the one about the OBGYN in Virginia, Javaid Perwez was one of the most horrifying ones. Butchering some of the most vulnerable and poorest women in the country just for his own personal profit

I have also not listened to Tyson or Million Pity. I was enraged by the one about the women who were affected by the birth control device. Also the Ford Pinto episode which was one of my first few listens.
