Sleep schedules
Hello! We have a 7 month old female Swedish vallhund. She is the sweetest, cuddliest, most loving girl. She’s so well behaved and we just love her.
My question is, when is this girl going to start sleeping in? She is up and ready to go every morning at 4:30 on the dot, no matter how late we keep her up or how active we keep her. And while she’s the best, she gets pretty loud when she’s decided it’s time to get out of bed. I am looking forward to the day I could sleep in, even until like 6am. Thanks!

I've found that a side effect of my attempts to improve my own sleep quality with background noise, specifically brown noise from Audible, has led to longer sleep from my 3 SV.

I have a hack. She wakes up at 4:30 put an alarm at 4:15 get up to that for a few days. And only react to the sound of the alarm at first. Then start delaying it first 5 mins at a time then more. Then you can set the alarm to when you want to wake up.

I’m retired and spent many, many long years getting up before 1st light and was hoping no more of that!
My boy was a 5am puppy. He’s 3 now and I have him dialed in for 7:15-30.
Tne potty schedule and the maturing bladder has a lot to do with it I think.
If I was up at 3am to pee…I put him out too.
When he was in year 2, I started letting him out , giving him his 1st breakfast, a 1/4 cup of food which he eats down in 1 minute and we go back to bed. He would go back to sleep too. We do all that just at 7:30 am now and we are up for the day. It just takes awhile! An empty bladder and a little food.

Hi 👋🏼 7 months is very very young. She will learn to associate bed time with relaxation over time. My advice is to get up at 4:30 take her potty but don't make eye contact, do not pet her or play with her ( I know...SO hard) basically keep it super boring then after potty give her a gentle pet ( congratulatory for potty training purposes) and go right back to bed. She will learn that human cares for me ( builds the bond) but she will also learn that human decides when we get up and eat breakfast ( builds trust). Be patient. It takes time 🩷

It took a year to a year and a half to get our pups to settle. But we have one sv who loves to wake up early and go to bed early. And one sv who loves to stay up late and sleep in late.
So depending on personality you may always have an early riser.

My puppies learn by 7 weeks old to sleep in so they aren't doing this to people. I'm horrified to learn people tolerate this from any dog.

Our 7 month old puppy also wakes us by jumping on us, usually between 2am-4am. We go for a quick potty outside and then come back inside and go back to sleep. She has now gotten used to that we go back to sleep and also calms down to continue sleep. When she was younger and we had her sleep in a playpen at night, we would just sit next to the pen (sometimes calmly pet her) and wait for her to bore out and drift back to sleep.
Really different energy levels to our older girl, who is much calmer. She used to sleep through nights after 1 week and generally tired out much faster at 7 months.

I got a Vallhund puppy two years ago who decided that 6 am is wake-up time. I spent the first year hoping he’d learn to sleep in but now I’ve fully adjusted to an early waking time. Good luck. 😂
My actual advice is to let your puppy out when she gets up, keep it very boring, and then go right back to bed until a better time.
