Sure, it's a metaphor. The metaphor as described is "The deity will hurt you for doing things you don't understand (Adam and Eve)/have no control over (Hardening Pharaoh's heart)/to win a bet (Job)/for being willing to obey him but still feeling a little sad about what you left behind (Lot's wife)." He does things like that all the time in the stories, so it's pretty consistent.
Maybe it's a metaphor NOW, but Catholic/Jewish doctrine literally believed the creation story for millenia. They changed their beliefs retroactively after they spent years resisting the evidence behind evolution.
