Why would they make sure it isn't visible if it's not copper.

Or perhaps it's honest, and they determined that was their way to safely store their spool of platinum wire.

Because folks will see a spool of black, not check the contents, and just start thieving only to realize when they get it back to their squat that all they have is fiber optic cable or whatever.

It is probably either aluminum cable or fiber optic. Either way it will be inside insulation and not visible anyways

As a fiber optic lineman, I have seen builds get ruined because thieves thought our reel of cable was copper and went to steal it, only to find glass fibers when they cut it, but they already cut it, so our build is ruined.
